Who we are

Located in the heart of historic Westminster, The Abbey Centre manages a vibrant community hub buzzing with a diverse range of activities and services aimed at addressing local community needs.

When many people think of Westminster, their minds often turn to government and wealth. However, Westminster as a community also faces high levels of deprivation, with neighbourhoods ranked among the top 10% of England’s most deprived areas.

We exist to support local residents and have proudly done so for over 70 years. Since 1991, we have operated a busy and vibrant community centre, providing a range of activities for people of all ages, from after-school clubs to programmes for older people. We also run a successful community food pantry, café, and catering operation.

We are ambitious about doing even more for local people and are embarking on a period of growth after developing a new theory of change and securing investment to enhance several aspects of our building.

About the role

This is your chance to transform a vital community hub in the heart of Westminster while applying your commercial acumen and legal knowledge.

We are looking for a dynamic Trustee to join our Board and help drive our community mission forward. As we expand our services and strengthen our financial foundation, your strategic vision will be instrumental in helping us navigate growth opportunities and ensure our long-term sustainability. Hence, we are looking for a Trustee with a business mindset. We are not looking for pro bono legal advice. We are looking for someone who can utilise their legal mind alongside their enterprise-focused and business-oriented experience. We are also interested in whether our new Trustee has any HR expertise.

Are you a qualified Yoga Instructor who would enjoy facilitating weekly sessions in our domestic abuse refuges over the summer holidays? During the school summer holidays, Hestia runs a six-week Summer Play Scheme providing activities and outings for mothers and their children across our refuges. Funded through generous donations from the public, the Summer Play Scheme provides women and children with a safe and supportive space to reconnect by having fun and sharing happy memories together as family.

What you will be doing

• To develop positive relationships with the children and women, maintain professional boundaries and keep accurate records.
• Keep a record of attendees, provide feedback and report any concerns to the staff team
• Design session plans enabling all group members to increase fitness, suppleness and help them relax
• Teach the group yoga postures and breathing techniques which allow a range of mixed ages and abilities to participate
• Inspire and motivate people to attend and get involved in the group activities where possible and encourage the group to help design future sessions

The skills you need

• Understanding of Domestic abuse and its impact on children and women
• Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with people from different backgrounds

About the Role

We are looking for a volunteer with knowledge of nutrition to support our in-person wellbeing and mental health activities. You will help us integrate simple, culturally sensitive nutrition advice into our support services, and share practical knowledge with our service users.

Key Responsibilities

Offer guidance on healthy eating habits and culturally appropriate nutrition
Support staff in developing easy-to-understand resources (leaflets, workshops, etc.)
Provide informal advice to clients during wellbeing sessions
Assist in the planning of nutrition-themed events or activities
Collaborate with our team to ensure accessibility and inclusivity

We are looking to recruit a Group Coordinator for our West Hertfordshire group. As our local Group Coordinator you’ll take the lead in making sure your local group works as effectively as possible. You’ll recruit, induct and support other group volunteers to make sure your group’s activities meet the needs of your local MS community. In this role you’ll be able to develop your leadership, management, communication, organisation and motivation skills. 

Time Commitment

We estimate this role will need around 5 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

Nature Buddies inspire and support local people at risk of isolation, to reconnect with the outdoor and local green spaces. This volunteer opportunity looks to develop members of the community with the confidence and mobility to spend more time outdoors to improve their mental and physical health. The activities and green spaces visited, will be chosen between the Nature Buddy, Leader and the supported individual; you decide together what is most helpful, convenient and enjoyable. A Nature Buddy is someone who believes in the benefits of health and wellbeing, outdoor learning and environmental stewardship.

Time commitment:

1 hour weekly for periods of 6-8 weeks at a time. This particular project runs until April/May, however there are many other projects in the Let's Go Outside and Learn catalogue. We love to work long-term with volunteers, so we provide solid support, online and in-person training, as well as regular support and guidance from us, to make this a no-brainer for you.

What skills do you need?

No special qualifications or background in horticulture needed.

Background

Indigenous peoples and local communities are grappling with the constant threat of displacement from their lands in Tanzania. The Maasai communities in Tanzania's Loliondo and Ngorongoro regions are currently facing significant challenges, primarily due to government-led eviction efforts aimed at designating these areas for conservation and tourism purposes. The violations of human and land rights have left thousands of people vulnerable and in need of urgent assistance. These evictions not only disrupt the livelihoods of the affected populations but also undermine their cultural heritage and traditional ways of life. As these communities are forced from their ancestral lands, many lose access to vital resources such as grazing lands, water, and shelter, leading to severe socio-economic hardships. Not1More is working with a partner organisation, Traditional Ecosystems Survival Tanzania (TEST), in Tanzania to support their essential fundraising, advocacy and community development activities.  

Your Role

We are looking for a volunteer who can dedicate time to this role through to December 2025. You will be a part of a team that works directly with Tanzania’s indigenous Maasai, and help to make a difference in key areas such as protecting ecosystems, preserving Indigenous knowledge, community capacity building and advocating for Indigenous rights.

The main objective is to help TEST diversify and increase their funding sources. This will include connecting with other enthusiastic team members online to develop a fundraising strategy and implementation of a fundraising campaign, including identifying grant funding opportunities, assisting in the preparation and submission of grant funding proposals, and pursuing philanthropic and corporate partnership funding opportunities.

Desirable Skills and Experience

Ideally you are a compassionate, organised, and resilient individual with strong communication and relationship-building skills, along with a passion for the cause. A proactive, positive personality with a can-do attitude, would highly suit this role.

Previous experience with fundraising activities, preferably with an NGO is desirable but not necessary.

Mentoring

Support and mentoring to develop your skills will be available in this role as we aim to help you bring out our talents in this team.

Hours

As this is a volunteer role, time is flexible, but you would be expected to attend a bi-weekly check-in with someone from the Not1More team to ensure we are working in the same direction.
