Main tasks and activities

Front of House:

Do you have admin/receptionist experience? We’re looking for a volunteer to enable us to support people going through the civil courts without legal representation. This is a great opportunity to support the administration of our busy service based at The Royal Courts of Justice. The role is broad in scope, involving supporting the London team by managing the client flow at the reception, assigning client appointments to our volunteers, clarifying points with clients and answering general client and volunteer queries. The people we support can’t usually access any formal legal help, yet need to be able to present their own cases clearly and without emotion – often facing professional barristers in court. At a time of great stress, this can seem an insurmountable task. Our 500+ volunteers work with people who often feel they have nowhere else to turn, offering them the chance to feel heard and understood. A court hearing may be the final stage of a case, and careful preparation for hearings makes the court experience more manageable. We provide a free service for people facing civil and family court proceedings across England and Wales, offering support and guidance before, during, and after court. Be trained to support young primary school children in numeracy, and help them to attain interest, confidence, and skills which will put them on a path to achieving their educational potential.
What will I be doing?
Numeracy, like literacy, is a vital life skill, but many children fall behind.
Following training, you will work one-to-one with 6 to 8 year olds in a local state primary school to help them improve their confidence, enjoyment, and skills in maths. The school will select appropriate children who are behind in maths and likely to respond well to individual support.
Sessions are weekly, in school time, at a fixed time to be agreed between you and the school. Volunteers work one-to-one with each child for up to half an hour, normally with three children consecutively, for a total of about an hour and a half.
At each session, using games and other creative activities, support the child in learning or improving skills and gaining confidence in their own ability. The role is very much about helping the child learn, rather than you teaching.
Our Mentors (current or former teachers also volunteering with us) will provide you with direct support to help you plan sessions.
Commitment
We ask volunteers to commit to a weekly session in school for the full school year. (Recognising that you will have to miss occasional weeks.)
What impact will this have?
You will be helping improve the educational and life chances of the children you work with. A child who is behind in maths aged 6 often develops a dislike for the subject and a belief that "I can't do maths" which can stay with them forever. Helping the child acquire skills and confidence can let them not just engage better with maths but can improve their whole attitude to education, giving them better chances in life.
Over half the children we work with are "disadvantaged" in terms of being on pupil premium or having family difficulties You will be giving these children the support that is normal for other children.
You will not change the life of every child, but the experience of having a purposeful one-to-one relationship with a considerate adult from outside their family will be transformative for some children.
By helping to improve the performance of individual children, you are saving the teacher from having to devote so much time in class to them. This lets the teacher involve the whole class in better-received lessons, improving the educational experience for all the children.

Service: Perinatal Support for Partners Service
This is a service that offers fathers and non-birthing parents, who’s partner is being supported by the West London perinatal mental health service, an evidence-based 1:1 assessment to support their mental health and wellbeing. To support our PSFP Service with a variety of tasks such as conducting a 1:1 assessment, (which includes onboarding to the service), co-facilitating monthly peer support groups, signposting and helping partners to access other organisations, taking care of our inbox emails and other administrative duties.

- An appreciation of the complex factors that can precipitate, maintain, and exacerbate mental health problems
- Good oral and written communication skills (including listening skills); the ability to communicate in a patient, considered, and empathetic manner
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to follow administrative procedures
- A team player who is willing to chip in and work reflexively, responding to the challenges that arise from working in a dynamic environment
- IT skills – able to update spreadsheets, use web-based applications, video-conferencing software, and Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable:
- Customer Service experience, including with friends and family
- Experience of supporting people with mental health needs, in a voluntary, paid, or personal capacity, (i.e., friends and family)
- Previous involvement with local community groups/networks
- Awareness of the cultural barriers that may exist to seeking mental health support
Time commitment and expenses:
- 6 hours per week, during our core hours of 10am - 4pm.
- Please indicate your preferred volunteering day(s)/time(s) on your application
- We request a minimum commitment of 3 months of volunteering after the completion of your induction
- We will provide volunteers with an induction, training, and ongoing mentoring to support them in the role
- Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed

What you will be doing
- Holding conversations with people using the Service, checking in on their wellbeing and providing a listening ear/friendly face
- Motivate and inspire people to take part in activities
- Support with ad hoc and administrative tasks to support the smooth running of the Service
- Opportunities to deliver activities alongside the staff team and other volunteers
- Work alongside staff to support people living in the service or accessing one of our drop-in sessions
- Welcoming and engaging people using the Service
- Support with preparing light refreshments to create a relaxed environment

- Maintain discretion and judgement when dealing with sensitive and/or confidential information
