Project Background

Come and join our award-winning place-based volunteering programme that works with residents living across Hackney and the City of London.

You will be based out in the community - the programme is based at GP practices - to engage, support and enable local residents and patients to deliver local services for themselves, to meet local needs. We support residents to come together, to share their skills and experience for the benefit of each other, to deliver local groups and activities such as a book group, film club, exercise classes or cooking group. Residents from diverse backgrounds and demographics attend these activities together and make new connections, building strong local communities, all working together to make their area a better place to live. People, many of whom are isolated across all ages, and who have difficult life circumstances, are brought together, providing each other with mutual support and encouragement to develop new skills and pursue life goals, and to feel better able to voice their concerns to services.

You will be joining a nationally recognised project - having won an award from the Royal Society of Public Health in November 2024 - to support residents to fulfil their personal goals, make connections with others, and design activities and services that meet local needs. You will also be supporting people to improve their mental and physical health through signposting them to appropriate services and encouraging them to talk to their GP if they have concerns; and will be working in partnership with GP practice staff to co-create volunteer roles to make the practice more efficient and a better place to visit.

Who are we?

Volunteer Centre Hackney is a medium sized charity (currently 30 staff) based in the London borough of Hackney, working to support local residents to realise their skills and passions through volunteering and social action, and to share these for the benefit of others.

Our mission is to build and strengthen communities across Hackney through supporting residents of all ages and backgrounds to volunteer and build projects together.

In 2021, we were awarded the Freedom of the Borough Award by Hackney Council for our efforts to support residents during COVID, which included mobilising over 2000 volunteers to deliver food, prescriptions and essential items, provide emotional support to isolated residents and support the vaccine rollout. 

We work with hundreds of diverse community organisations and deliver various programmes to help residents share their skills and deliver their own social action projects to improve people’s lives. These include a befriending programme, volunteering brokerage matching local people to volunteer roles based on their skills, interests and goals, a specialist mental health programme, peer research and multiple resident engagement programmes at GP surgeries and estates across Hackney.

Post holders need to be enthusiastic and engaging, bringing energy to the role, be self-motivating and confident to work primarily alone, albeit with some support from the team members based at other sites.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide debt advice and money education on a case management basis and to support the provision of advice by volunteers. The post holder will be expected to manage their own cases and lead appointment sessions.

Ideally we are looking for someone with prior debt or social welfare experience, and who has experience of working with and supporting volunteers. However we will also consider employing someone as a trainee adviser if you are able to demonstrate that you possess the skills, maturity and determination to become proficient in this role. 

The role will be based in one of our branches in west London, but hybrid and remote options will be considered for the right candidate.

Our day centre service is currently open three days per-week offering respite, food and somewhere safe to be for anyone facing street homelessness. It provides advocacy and casework services to those who are vulnerably housed or homeless, supporting them to address their individual crisis and the underlying causes. We also provide a small year-round night shelter provision. 

APAP works in close partnership with a number of key agencies locally including drug and alcohol teams, street outreach services, local authority housing teams and the wider VCS. We are a gateway service in the community through which our clients can access a range of support. 

This role will require a keen interest in homelessness and the devastating impact this can have on people. This is a new role which would suit someone with experience of recruiting and managing volunteers. The role will entail expanding our volunteer base, developing processes and procedures to effectively support them and managing them on site. The role will report to the Senior Project Worker.

Learning and Development Facilitator

Location: This role is a hybrid role and there will be an expectation to travel to London once or twice a month, which is inclusive of your salary.

Senior Housing & Welfare Advice Worker’s post

The Manna Day Centre is a drop-in Centre for homeless and vulnerably housed single men and women. It is run by a team of project workers, under the Director, who are responsible for its smooth operation. Basic Services offered include food, showers, clothing, housing & welfare advice, medical care, and access to laptops. The Centre opens to service users 7 days a week, 8.30am– 1.30pm. The working week for this post is Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm each day.

The Senior Housing & Welfare Advice Worker must have a commitment to homeless people, which includes acceptance and respect. Responsibilities are shared among the team according to needs, skills and aptitudes. The annual salary is negotiable (depending on your experience) ranging from £33,775 to £41,359. Benefits include a pension scheme, travel loans and 25 days annual leave (plus time in lieu of bank holidays worked).

The Role

We are recruiting for a Community Fundraising Manager to join our Fundraising team. The role will be instrumental in the Foundation’s engagement with different communities and building fundraising partnerships across a range of community audiences, including youth and education, sports clubs, community groups and individuals doing their own activities. You will be responsible for growing our existing community products such as Turn Cricket Red as well as introducing new products and initiatives to generate growth in Community Fundraising. About the Ruth Strauss Foundation

In early 2018, Ruth Strauss, the wife of Sir Andrew Strauss the former England cricket captain, was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers. Ruth died on December 29th 2018; she was 46 years old and mother to two children, then aged 10 and 13.

About the role

At the Motability Foundation we fund, support, research and innovate so that all disabled people can make the journeys they choose. We oversee the Motability Scheme and provide grants to help people use it, providing access to transport to hundreds of thousands of people a year. We award grants to other charities and organisations who provide different types of transport, or work towards making transport accessible. We also carry out ongoing research, in partnership with disabled people and key stakeholders in the industry, to inspire innovations that continue to champion accessible transport for all.

This role is an exciting new opportunity to shape and deliver on Motability Foundation’s aims to become more insights led and to systematically involve disabled people in our decision making. You will support the Head of Insight and Evaluation in providing the organisation with insight drawn from existing research, primary research, business data and through user insight. The role will lead development of a user insight approach and clear mechanisms to involve disabled people in the Foundation’s decisions systematically. The role will establish a user insight research community (akin to a customer panel but broader in scope), which the organisation can draw from for user insight.

The role is also responsible for delivering a strategic research and insight plan for the organisation to inform operational and strategic decisions, including feeding into our strategy mid-term review. Others in the organisations will also carry out research and hence this function has a role in setting standards for quality research, a coordinating role in ensuring a cross-organisational understanding of ongoing research to avoid duplication, and to draw insights and disseminate these to relevant internal and external audiences.

What you’ll be doing

• Support the head of team by developing a strategic insight research plan.
• Lead the delivery of the insight research plan, including developing clear research briefs, working with external suppliers to deliver research and where appropriate deliver research in-house.
• Establish a user insight capability in line with good practice and mature this capability over time.
• In collaboration with key internal customers, establish a framework for when and how to engage with disabled people regarding decisions.
• Develop and set standards for good quality research and insight for the organisation, including ensuring disabled people can fully and equitably participate in research/user insight exercises.
• Ensure that planned research and insight generation by the insight function is completed to a high standard, aligned with good practice.
• Set up and lead a cross-organisational research forum and ensure this mechanism is effective in avoiding duplication and creating alignment.

Your experience

Must haves:

• Experience of delivering user insight and/or running customer/consumer panels and/or working with supporter panels.
• Ability to design and develop research programmes and have highly developed analytical skills.
• Highly developed ability to work collaboratively with other teams across the organisation.
• Exceptional written and oral influencing skills, including the judicious use of data and the compelling presentation of insights, through engaging reports, infographics, and dashboards.
• Relevant qualification in an analytical discipline such as social sciences, economics or evidence of significant relevant professional experience.
• Experience managing research projects or commissioning external consultants.
• Strong project management skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities.
• Line and/or team management experience.

We feel that experience of setting up and/or managing consumer, customer or supporter panels is relevant. However, please note that as a Foundation we do not fundraise and as such are not looking to develop a supporter panel.

Nice to haves

• Experience of disability inclusive research – this is essential to the role. However, we will ensure appropriate training for those who do not have these skills.
• Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative data analysis tools (e.g., MAXQDA, R) and data visualisation platforms (e.g., Power BI).
• Proven quantitative and qualitative research skills and familiarity with working with large datasets.

Extra Information

• The role is based In Harlow, Essex at Motability’s offices, easily commutable from London, 30 minutes from Liverpool Street station or 18 minutes from Tottenham Hale station. We offer a shuttle bus from the Harlow Town train station to the office.

Role Purpose

The Operations Director is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective running of all operational aspects of Katherine Low Settlement.
