About the Hospice:  

Set in the tranquil grounds of Willen Lake, Willen Hospice is the leading provider of specialist palliative care within the Milton Keynes area. We offer 24 hour / seven days a week palliative care to people who have advanced disease, caring for people in our Inpatient Unit which accommodates 15 patients and the local community. Our person centred care is delivered with compassion and respect for people’s wishes. We have an expanding Therapeutic & Wellbeing service offering Psychological Wellbeing, Social Care, Physiotherapy, Occupational and Complementary Therapy.  Our dedicated Business Development teams and retail portfolio of shops raise vital funds to deliver this care.

About the role

As Senior PR Manager, you will play a crucial role in raising the profile of Save the Children UK amongst key target audiences, by developing and delivering projects that command media attention and coverage. As a member of the PR, Artist & Broadcast team, you will be able to apply your experience working with the media to shape major fundraising and influencing campaigns and build our brand. Some stakeholders you will work with include high profile ambassadors, influencers, and partners. To be successful in this role you will lean on your excellent verbal and written communications skills and have a strong network of contacts to help share the work of Save the Children UK.

In this role, you will:

• Work closely with team members in other departments within Save the Children to provide excellent PR support for delivering Save the Children's objectives
• Develop and execute mass-market PR plans that amplify key strategic campaigns and initiatives across the calendar year, including brand, fundraising and advocacy priorities
• Identify and maximise opportunities to generate reactive media coverage, responding effectively to external events, news and the cultural conversation 
• Write, co-ordinate and issue media releases, statements, briefing materials and Q&As, including for high-profile spokespeople and corporate partners, if required 
• Develop and nurture close working relationships with journalists (especially those on features, women's, lifestyle, showbiz outlets) across print, digital and broadcast media - including a diverse range of outlets beyond mainstream media
• Represent Save the Children as spokesperson externally, networking and building relationships that support brand building activity in the media.

About you

To be successful, it is important that you have:

• Significant operational experience in mass-market PR, as a print or broadcast journalist, or equivalent professional media communications experience
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external contacts across diverse cultures, disciplines and time zones
• Solid experience developing and implementing PR campaigns for corporate clients, including cause-related events, co-branded marketing activity, global campaigns
• Excellent working knowledge of the media landscape – including national broadcast and press, women's, showbiz, tabloid and digital media – with a network of journalistic contacts.
• Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write and edit engaging copy for a range of audiences, across traditional and new mediums
• Ability to do ‘on call' rota work at weekends and out of hours

Our involvement work brings together our community to mobilise urgent change in research, support, campaigning and awareness through the power of their united voices. The insight from our involvement network inspires and drives all our work across The Charity. This role involves actively engaging and stewarding everyone across all relevant and interested groups. This includes providing support to those living with a brain tumour diagnosis, their family and their friends. As part of our services team, you will ensure we engage all groups including those disadvantaged and less heard from, championing the voices of our wider community to grow our involvement network.  You will also collaborate with those professionally committed to the cause, including our research community, to ensure that people affected by brain tumours have the chance to both shape and participate in research opportunities. You will be responsible for measuring and sharing the difference we are making through the delivery and analysis of our Improving Brain Tumour Care Surveys, empowering the community to identify the gaps in treatment and care experiences, so we can make a difference where it matters most.

Who we’re looking for:

The successful candidate will have experience of working with individuals, groups and communities and have the ability to communicate complex information in clear, engaging ways. As a highly motivated and established champion of community involvement, you will have a proven track record of delivering a programme of involvement activities, including tools and resources to support meaningful patient and public involvement in research. You will be keen to use your leadership and relationship building skills to make a real difference, and have an instinct to listen, support and enable the community to drive change. You will have excellent people and influencing skills and the ability to identify smart opportunities, develop action plans and deliver change. With a willingness to learn, you will be evidence-led and analytical when delivering new approaches to involvement across the organisation.

Key accountabilities:

· Grow the involvement of the community in driving development of The Charity’s work including support, campaigns, fundraising, research and strategy

· Develop the involvement strategy and engage teams across the organisation to maximise the use of involvement

· Promote, advise on, and facilitate involvement activities including but not limited to focus groups, workshops and developing and undertaking surveys

· Collaborate with our Research team, contributing to the design and implementation of policies relating to research involvement

· Steward and look after the involvement network and develop their experience in a structured way over time

· Manage our Young Ambassador and Involvement Champion programmes

· Ensure we engage all groups including those disadvantaged and less heard from

· Innovate in involvement by bringing in ideas from others and developing partnerships across the wider ecosystem, in the field of brain tumours and outside the sector

· Identify the gaps in experience of treatment and support of the brain tumour community through the Improving Brain Tumour Care surveys and other feedback mechanisms 

· With the Head of Services, ensure that all services are developed in collaboration and close partnership with representatives from our community from the outset

· As part of the wider services team, work closely with the team and community to review service delivery and development of new content

· Ensure effective operational cover of the support services when required, including own participation in delivery of services

· Provide feedback to funders and other stakeholders in a suitable format on our Improving Brain Tumour Care Surveys and involvement outcomes as required

Experience:

· Proven track record in a similar role for at least two years i.e. leading on involvement and participation work especially in a health, research, social care or third sector environment

· Designed and run user insight work, including online and in person workshop facilitation and interviews

· Designed and built online surveys, including delivering quantitative and qualitative research methods and their application

· Experience of working with and supporting people affected by neurological disorders and/or people affected by brain tumours

· Recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers

· Proven experience of identifying, working to and delivering on Key Performance Indicators and clearly demonstrating impact

· Experience of using a CRM database to accurately record data and create reports that will drive operational, funding and strategic decisions forward

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

· A good understanding of patient and public involvement and the health research environment (including the research process and methodology)

· Analytical and insight measurement.  Particularly adept at Excel and using survey tools

· Excellent communication skills especially digital channels, social media and online communities

· Proven strategic relationship and network building skills

· Excellent and persuasive communicator with internal and external stakeholders (written, oral including public speaking and presentations)

· Empathy with the aims, objectives and activities of The Brain Tumour Charity

Purpose of The role

The UK Housing Advocacy Manager will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission by leading advocacy efforts, shaping policies, and promoting sustainable housing solutions for affordable housing in Great Britain, particularly through our groundbreaking initiative "Empty Spaces to Homes."

As this is a new role, and is being recruited alongside the Head of Global Affairs and Advocacy, key responsibilities will include the establishment of a new function at Habitat GB.  It involves working closely with colleagues across the Habitat GB organisation and contributing to advocacy efforts across the Habitat network at global and regional levels through engagement, strategy and shared learning.  Key responsibilities also include developing communication and advocacy strategies targeting professionals and decision makers in social, environmental and housing sectors, as well as undertaking research and writing policy papers.

Main Responsibilities 

1) Research and Analysis:

• Commission and conduct in-depth research into current British housing landscapes and related legislation, assessing the effectiveness of mechanisms for converting unused premises into social housing and its environmental impact.
• Identify legal changes necessary to facilitate such activities and advocate for their implementation.

2) Lead Policy Advocacy Efforts:

• Utilise research findings to develop policy positions and identify priority issues, setting policy goals, and mapping out related advocacy activities.
• Embed critical concepts such as embodied carbon and whole life cycle into policy communications to amplify Habitat GB's messaging.

3) Partnerships and Networks:

• Join and represent Habitat GB at existing coalitions or form new coalitions if necessary with stakeholders in the social, environmental, and housing sectors to advocate for climate and equity-related incentives in national and local legislations, policies, and funding mechanisms.
• Build a network of relationships among key stakeholder groups and individual decision-makers to advance Habitat's policy goals.
• Identify strategic events and ensure speaking roles for Habitat GB.
• Represent Empty Spaces to Homes and Habitat for Humanity’s wider UK programmes for awareness raising, advocacy and other priorities at key meetings and events.

4) Direct Lobbying:

• Cultivate strategic relationships with key decision-makers to further Habitat's policy objectives.

5) Collaboration:

• Develop collaborative partnerships internally with Habitat entities across Europe, aligning with the broader strategic objectives of the Empty Spaces to Homes initiative.
• Support communication efforts to underpin advocacy efforts effectively.

6) Monitoring and Evaluation:

• Work with the Impact Team to provide regular updates on advocacy strategy activities and evaluate their effectiveness.

 

Person Specification

· Proven experience in professional advocacy to influence key policy positions and decisions, preferably in housing or a related field.

· Track record in delivering targeted advocacy strategies and implementing communication strategies to support advocacy efforts.

· Experience in engaging stakeholders and decision-makers through events, networks, and meetings.

· Experience in community mobilisation or engagement.

· Understanding of housing poverty policies and related social welfare issues in Great Britain, with the ability to advise on effective mechanisms for influence.

· Familiarity with Local Authority Governance and opportunities for policy influence at local and regional levels.
