We are seeking an exceptional advocate with a policy, legal or related digital rights campaigning background to work with us furthering privacy and civil liberties in the UK at one of the UK’s leading rights NGOs. Initially, this role will be principally challenging facial recognition surveillance and scrutinising police surveillance/AI powers.
The right Senior Advocacy Officer will help us to lobby UK Parliament to further privacy and wider rights at a critical time – when a legal framework on police use of facial recognition is very soon to be introduced, and police are expanding their use of AI and new surveillance technologies. You’ll build on your strong experience to be a credible and proactive lobbyist in Parliament, write expert briefings and be confident meeting parliamentarians, take a leading role liaising with policy stakeholders, advise on strategic litigation, be a leading advocate in the press and the public forum, develop policy positions on key issues, and help drive our public campaigns for change.
About you
You’ll have 3+ years experience in a legal or policy capacity, or in a comparable advocacy environment that relied on your expertise on technology and rights issues – ideally involving facial recognition. You’ll have a strong track record of advocacy success.
You’ll be familiar with key litigation and policy issues in the area. You’ll also have excellent knowledge of British politics and UK parliamentary procedures and strong political contacts to match.
You’ll be at ease working on a strictly non-partisan, cross-party basis and grounding policy analysis in human rights and liberal principles.
You’ll be proactive in pitching policy, litigation and campaign ideas for the organisation to pursue within our work streams.
You’ll be an experienced spokesperson, confident undertaking live and recorded TV and radio interviews, talking to a variety of audiences and representing the organisation and our campaigns.

Senior Advocacy Officer job description
Policy

Produce policy analysis, research, briefings and reports for dissemination

Develop strategic policy recommendations informed by expertise

Identify and explore new and emerging policy issues in our key work areas

Communicate complex policy issues to varied audiences, whether Parliament, the press or the public

Build strong relationships with parliamentarians and advisors across all parties

Identify opportunities to further our strategic aims in Parliament, through committees, parliamentary questions and other activities; as well as regional assemblies and on occasion local government

Work with stakeholders and pursue collaborative campaigns/coalitions on key issues

Develop Big Brother Watch’s relationships with allies across Government, legislative bodies, international organisations, and NGOs

Draft formal correspondence, blog posts, presentations, and other documents articulating Big Brother Watch’s policy positions
Advocacy

Identify campaigns and advocacy opportunities, and feed into campaign plans and materials

Person specification
Essential
-
Min. 3+ years experience in a similar role

Familiarity/expertise with domestic policy matters relating to privacy, surveillance and/or free expression

Experience of involvement in litigation, either in a legal or campaigns capacity

Experience working with parliamentarians and/or producing policy briefings

Strong legal and/or policy research skills

Excellent and persuasive communications skills

Demonstrable experience in privacy, freedom of expression, and other rights and technology areas

Aptitude for managing and building relationships with partner organisations, parliamentarians and other stakeholders

Proven ability to produce high quality work under pressure

Willingness to work in non-partisan environment, and ability to recruit support of MPs across all parties

The Research and Engagement Officer will report to, and support, the Healthwatch Hounslow Manager. They will:
• Deliver research projects – including planning logistics, designing methodology and analysing quantitative and qualitative data.
• Report findings through presentations and written reports throughout the year.
• Lead on organising projects, ensuring that actions are followed up, prioritising effectively and providing relevant outputs.
• Deliver a regular programme of Hounslow-based outreach and events.
• Onboard, support and manage volunteers, working with our team of volunteers to deliver research and associated activities.
• Undertake policy reviews and provide advice on research and evaluation methodology to the Research Director, Healthwatch Hounslow Manager and other members of the Public Voice team.
• Work with Public Voice teams to capture issues relating to the delivery of services or gaps in policies. Use this information to identify common themes which relate to service design and health and social care policy.
• Engage effectively with seldom-heard communities.
We are seeking a candidate with proven research experience, including the ability to interpret and analyse data and present solutions. You will have a keen interest in health and social care and the ability to write clear, concise policy reviews. You will also have a flair for programme and project management, and be skilled in organising tasks, logistics and administrative systems. We are seeking an enthusiastic and organised Carer Voice and Engagement Officer to join our team at The Carers' Centre.
This rewarding role will help ensure that unpaid carers have opportunities to share their experiences, influence local services and see the impact of their involvement. Working with adult carers, young carers and young adult carers, you will coordinate participation activities that are welcoming, meaningful and inclusive.
You will build relationships with carers, colleagues and partner organisations, creating opportunities for carers to shape services, raise awareness and contribute to positive change. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys connecting people, supporting others to build confidence and ensuring lived experience helps drive improvement.
By ensuring participation is inclusive, well organised and genuinely influential, you will help strengthen the voice of carers across Bath and North East Somerset while contributing to the continued development of The Carers' Centre and the wider caring community.
Key responsibilities
Carer Voice and Participation
- Coordinate and support Carers Voice, Young Carers Council and other participation forums.
- Assist in the delivery of age-appropriate engagement activities that build confidence and participation skills.
- Encourage carers from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences and influence services.
- Ensure carers receive feedback about how their involvement has made a difference.
- Support carers to participate in service improvement, consultations and decision-making opportunities.
- Promote meaningful and inclusive involvement across all services.
Engagement and Community Connection
- Build positive relationships with carers, partners and community organisations.
- Coordinate requests for carer involvement from local services and partner organisations.
- Support carers to represent lived experience within local groups, networks and projects.
- Work with colleagues to create accessible and welcoming opportunities for involvement.
- Promote the value and impact of unpaid carers across Bath and North East Somerset.
Communications and Development
- Coordinate participation communications, updates and engagement opportunities.
- Develop positive working relationships with local organisations, community groups, statutory services and partner agencies.
- Support carers to build confidence and develop skills through training and lived experience opportunities.
- Work with colleagues to promote participation and celebrate the difference carers make.
- Encourage involvement from carers who may not traditionally engage with services.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact
- Maintain accurate and timely records of all interactions and support provided.
- Collect monitoring data, feedback and outcome information in line with organisational requirements.
- Support the delivery of programme evaluation activities.
- Utilise organisational systems, including Salesforce, to record activity and outcomes.
General
- Adhere to the Carers’ Charter and provide a professional carer-focused information, advice and support service.
- Encourage carers to provide feedback on The Carers’ Centre services and actively participate in shaping future delivery.
- Undertake safeguarding training, adhere to organisational safeguarding policies and follow all safeguarding procedures.
- Take responsibility for ensuring communications and record keeping comply with GDPR and data protection requirements.
- Ensure that you adopt good practice within the Carers Trust network.
- Ensure that you work within The Carers’ Centre policy framework.
- Recognise the importance of fundraising and positively contribute to organisational sustainability where appropriate.
