At the Canal & River Trust we are looking for volunteers to make a real impact on peoples lives. The focus is to support to some of the most vulnerable people on the waterways.
As a boater welfare advocate you will be volunteering alongside the Customer Support Team in this brand new opportunity.
The role includes but is not limited to:
• Mapping out vital resources near the waterways within the East Midlands region for our most vulnerable customers – such as Places of Welcome, food banks, advice (financial/legal etc.) centres etc.
• Establishing vital useful information – opening times, parking, transport links, registration requirements
• Finding the most accessible way to get this information to the people who may need it – for example, poster in our notice boards, website, leaflet for our BLCS team to take, letter drops etc.
• Identify opportunities to works with local councils and support local initiatives e.g. food bank events.
• Document the success of events the Trust have supported and develop case studies of success.
Ideally you’ll be able to give between 2 and 10 hours a week to give and gain the most from the task. The work will mainly involve research at the outset and is flexible.

We have an ever-growing Community Network of vegans just like you, who have a passion to volunteer and promote veganism where they live.
Every month, our Network choose from a range of outreach tasks. These could include town centre stalls, writing to a councillor or MP, sharing our campaigns on social media or contacting local businesses. You're in control of how much or how little you do.
As an Advocate, you will have a network of other Advocates and an Organiser in your area. Your Organiser will be your main point of contact. They will send you tasks every month and ask you to feed back on what you've completed and any positive outcomes.
Why do we need you to volunteer?
As the vegan community grows, veganism itself becomes better understood. We're finding that more people are looking to The Vegan Society to find out what being vegan is all about.
Local communities are starting to see the vegan movement as something real and something that’s happening in their area. More people are embracing a vegan lifestyle, which we welcome. From new businesses, to families, to councillors, many people need support. This could be with a range of topics: going vegan, finding correct information around a vegan diet, providing vegan options in their business, MPs listening to vegan constituents, and learning about our work.
Local issues are often unique and more varied than national issues. Our volunteers from local areas are vital! They enable us to share our messages and campaigns in an effective way. Research tells us that people are far more likely to trust information from a peer rather than an outside expert, so community volunteering vastly increases the impact of our campaigns.
Our network of committed local vegans across the country is growing! The Vegan Society organises various outreach activities to influence change in every level of society. There are a range of activities going on all the time, from general educational stalls at events to meeting with local policy influencers.
Advocates are a crucial voice in their own community. They ensure that our campaign messages are spread far and wide. They provide a strong vegan presence in local communities.
What does the Advocate role involve?
Being an Advocate for veganism with The Vegan Society will mean communicating with people in your local community. You'll share the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. You will form part of a local group, headed up by a local Organiser. The Organiser will feed back your collective efforts to staff. You will also be invited to our private Facebook group, for vegan socialising and ideas sharing.
You’ll stay in touch with the Organiser and bring your passion to tasks. Activities can range from staffing a stall to giving a talk at an employee event. It could also mean writing to a local newspaper or lobbying an MP.
Messaging can differ every month. Part of our mission statement is to ensure people can remain vegan, so you might focus on getting more vegan options available in local businesses. Or within our Live Vegan for Less campaign, you may share cheap vegan recipes to help people with the cost of living.
When acting as an Advocate, you will use The Vegan Society’s branding and messaging guidelines. Your local Organiser will guide you in doing this, as they hold physical resources and handbooks. You can report any issues and feedback you have to your Organiser. You can also contact staff if your Organiser isn't available or you have any problems.
What training and support is available?
You will be provided with a big welcome and full induction from your local Organiser. They will introduce you to the group and any actions that are ongoing. Any training and development will be provided via your Organiser, and you can also ask for specific training on any areas that you need some development in.

- Good email etiquette, responding in a timely manner

How much time do I need to invest?
For Advocates, we ask for people to engage in a minimum of four to six actions per year. An example of an action could be writing to an MP or holding a stall. But the more you can do, the better! On occasion, there may also be online meetings to plan for actions or provide training.

The types of dreams we offer are:
- Home Makeovers: Bedrooms redesigned by our team of dream makers, inspired by each dream child, or garden play equipment to enhance a child's environment
- Getaways: UK holidays and cherished experience days built to inspire a lifetime of memories
- Small change, Big impact Programme: This programme aims to improve the daily lives of isolated children through access to vital equipment and technology.
Our Makeovers, Experience Days and Small change, Big impact Programme can all be delivered on an individual basis or as part of a Community Dream.
Why is this role important?
Dream stories are an important part of how we open a dialogue with our audience and keep them engaged with the work that we do. We gather feedback and generate Dream Stories to fundraise, engage donors, provide feedback to funders and referrers, and record the dreams we deliver to mark our history as a charity and improve.
The Role
As Family Feedback and Dream Story volunteer you will speak to families over the phone to gather information about:
- The Dream child, who they are, their personality and interests.
- The child’s medical condition and how that impacts them.
- What the dream was, where the idea came from and why it was important to them.
- Highlights from the dream and how it went.
- The impact of the dream since it came true.
As well as any other information you feel is relevant and would make for a compelling story, that the family are happy for us to use.
You will then use this information to create a Dream Story that will be written in line with DCT guidelines and used across the charity. Dreams Come True are required to keep accurate records of the full conversation with the family, so we will also ask the volunteer to provide the notes of the call.
You may be required to talk to the Dream Family and/or Dream Child about how they can support the charity if they so wish to, but we never ask families to make donations. You may need to signpost them to someone else within the charity.
Suitable for:
- Those with experience of creative writing; either through work, education, or volunteering
- Those who are excellent communicators both written and verbal (especially over the phone)
- Those wanting to help fulfil the dreams of children and young people who have it tough, living with serious and life-limiting conditions and disabilities in areas of high deprivation.
- Those wanting to work closely with our dream families
- Those able to organise their own time and keep accurate records.
- Those who are aware of active listening skills and can use them confidently

Location of Volunteering
- This volunteer role can be done from home
Are travel expenses reimbursed?
- If you need to travel for this volunteer role it will be reimbursed, but it is unlikely as this is a remote working role.
Time Commitment
- We would like each volunteer to be able to call two families and write up two dream stories a week. Time commitment and working hours are flexible.

We are looking for experienced professionals with experience of working with teenagers/ young adults/ unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.
Following a rise in referrals for asylum seeking children, teenagers and young adults, we are looking for volunteers to help us support young refugees and fulfil their unmet needs.
We need volunteers who have relevant experience to help us get to know these children, to spend time with them either one on one or via group outings/ youth clubs. At Action for Children, our vision is that every child and young person in this country has a safe and happy childhood. Dorset Nightstop promotes this by preventing homelessness.
We provide children and young people with a safe, private room for the night in the house of a trained volunteer across BCP and Dorset. Although Dorset Nightstop has been running since 2009, we have just had our busiest year, working with a total of 99 young people and providing 292 safe bed nights. The increase in young people who’ve found themselves homeless is the reason we are looking to recruit new volunteers who can occasionally provide a spare room for young people at a difficult time.
Young people are referred through local agencies and councils, and we run a police check and a thorough risk assessment to ensure they are suitable for the service. Guests stay on a night by night basis, and will receive ongoing support from a Nightstop worker to find long-term, stable accommodation.
A recent young person we helped told us that Dorset Nightstop saved his life, adding “There’s not a chance I would be where I am now without Nightstop’s support.” So by joining us, you could be making a huge difference to a vulnerable young person’s life.
What are we looking for in hosts?
· You're living in either the Dorset or BCP area
· You have a spare, private room that you are able to offer up occasionally at short notice
· You understand the importance of working to Nightstop’s policies and procedures, particularly around Child Protection and Confidentiality

There are 7 custody suites Margate, Folkestone, Canterbury, Medway, Tonbridge, North Kent (Gravesend) and Maidstone. You can choose which custody suite you want to support, however in an emergency you can always of course say no, you are a volunteer.
You will be supporting young peeople and older vulnerable people while they are in police custody, it is always interesting, sometimes it is sometimes sad, but as a volunteer you will always bring some light and support into, what can be, a very dark time for the detainee.

At Koala NW, our volunteer support is at the heart of what we do and we know how much our families appreciate the support our volunteers offer.
As a Koala North West volunteer, you will be given the training and support to make a real difference to families in your community. You will also develop transferable skills which can support you in your life, whether that’s at home or at work. You will make friends along the way and join other volunteers for peer support sessions and join in celebrations like National Volunteers week & Christmas events.
Once you have completed your 6 weeks training programme, you will be matched to a suitable family to offer emotional and practical support. You will be supported by a coordinator and given support and supervision regularly.
Every family we support is unique so the support that we offer is equally unique to that family and depends entirely on the circumstances and what they would like support with. We help parents identify what they are already doing well, and support them to build on this to improve their relationships with their children.
You will be visiting families in their own homes once a week for an hour or two, if you have availability to support more than one family just let us know and you can be matched to additional families. Or you may be offering virtual support. During the pandemic, we had to adjust our home visiting to virtual support, via zoom, telephone /What’s App video calls/ texts. It proved very successful as this was a regular contact for families during lockdown.
Due to the success of virtual support, if families prefer this type of support as an alternative to home visits, that’s okay.
Support in one or more of the following areas could be offered:
- Social isolation/loneliness, support families to get outdoors, walking with them to the park or accompanying to appointments etc
- Poor emotional and/or mental health wellbeing
- Managing children’s behaviours/sleep issues
- School readiness
- Family bereavement
- Disability/complex needs or ill health
- New baby/multiple births
- Difficulty with home management/routine
- Budgeting
All home visits by volunteers are carried our between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. (Flexible around family and work commitments)
What do Koala NW expected from you?
- You have parenting experience
- You have a non-judgemental attitude
- You are flexible and are able to commit to 2 hours minimum each week for a period of at least 12 months
- You are able to attend a 6 week training course. Training is held in Liverpool and runs 1 day a week for 6 consecutive weeks between 9.30am and 2.30pm
- You are willing to attend ongoing training to support you in your volunteering role.
We are proud that 43% of our current staff started as volunteers with Koala North West.
Since we started, we have supported in excess of 12,000 families and trained more than 1,500 volunteers.
Volunteering can change a family's life and 1-2 hours per week can make such a huge difference. Our volunteers are the difference.

What skills should they have
We are looking for a volunteer who has experience in the NHS and medical/research environment. If you're someone who can assess a situation and develop a clear strategy to achieve the desired outcome, we want to hear from you.
As our ideal candidate, you're an effective communicator who can engage with doctors and produce written and visual materials that really make an impact. You're also a team player who can work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Managing projects and team members is second nature to you, and you're able to keep everyone on track and motivated. And with your awareness of the political and economic landscape in the area of complex diseases, you can navigate through any obstacles that come your way.

In this role, you will organise campaign events in your local area to inspire and support people near you to take action for the animals. We will give you all the materials you need, plus training and ongoing guidance - no prior experience required.
Through the actions and events you organise locally, you will help open the eyes of the general public to the truth of factory farming, encouraging them to take action as part of our campaigns. Your grassroots events will also add vital pressure onto our target companies, encouraging them to commit to better welfare for the animals currently trapped in their supply chains.
As a warm, friendly and approachable person, you will provide the supportive, community space for like-minded people to feel confident joining in and taking action to help animals, ultimately growing your own community of changemakers.
You can be based anywhere within the UK to take part in this role so there are no limitations on location - small village to big city, we need you wherever you are!
As a Grassroots Organiser, you will be:

Organising community events in your area, including socials, peaceful protests and outreach on a regular basis (ideally one event every 4-6 weeks but this is flexible)

Promoting your events and encourage others to join, bringing people together for the animals to create change

Getting involved in campaign actions remotely - writing emails, letters, social media actions and more

Attending online events within the volunteer community
Gain fantastic transferable experience and build your advocacy skills in this flexible and rewarding role. Perfect for those interested in gaining firsthand experience in campaigning or volunteer management. You will be working directly with THL UK staff members who will steward and support you throughout your time with us. You will also have access to exclusive training opportunities to further your animal advocacy development.
This role can be done from anywhere, no matter where you are in the UK. No prior experience is required, training and ongoing support provided, plus a full onboarding process. There is no set time commitment, but roughly 4-7 hours a month is average for this role, depending on how many events you wish to organise each month (we recommend one every 4-6 weeks).
