The Stuart Hall Foundation is inspired by the life’s work of Professor Stuart Hall in the interlocking worlds of activism, academia and the arts. Hall’s work was characterised by its breadth and its interdisciplinary nature, spanning across cultural studies, media theory, political analysis, and the study of race and identity.
The Foundation was formally launched in 2015 by Hall’s family, friends and colleagues in order to commemorate his legacy by attending to the urgent political, social and cultural questions of our time.
Our mission
The Foundation focuses on achieving a more progressive and just society through public education, artistic and intellectual initiatives. Our mission is to popularise critical thought by reshaping public discourse and by supporting the development of a new generation of artists, academics and activists who are dedicated to challenging issues of inequality.
We work on our mission through three strands of activity:
- With institutional partners we offer scholarships, fellowships, artist residencies and commissions.
- We create free-to-access digital learning resources including recorded lectures and conversations, podcasts, written essays and artistic commissions.
- We provide digital and physical spaces for the public and for our network of scholars, fellows and artists to exchange and generate new ideas together.
Our organisation is now at a moment of transition, and we are looking to recruit a new Chair of Trustees. We have been successful in recent grant funding applications, and as a result the Foundation has been able to expand its activities and is financially secure for the next two years. The new Chair of Trustees will continue to build and lead the Foundation with a distinct identity as a public education charity working in service of social justice.
Chair of Trustees
We are looking to appoint a new Chair who has a demonstrable commitment to the Foundation with the ability to lead and manage a unique and growing national charity.
The Chair has responsibility for providing oversight, shaping strategy and working collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to further develop the organisation’s vision for the next three to five years. The Chair will also support the Vice Chair in overseeing financial management and external relations. The role is not accompanied by any financial remuneration.
We are proud of the work we have achieved so far, having partnered with higher education and cultural institutions, organised many public events and provided scholarships, fellowships, awards and residencies.
The successful applicant will be a strong public voice for the Foundation and bring creativity and commitment to the role. We want to hear from candidates who share Hall's interests and values, and who want to help us build on his legacy by generating new ideas that change public understanding of the political landscape.

Based in either our Main Gallery or Stables Gallery, the role is integral in providing a high-quality visitor experience by bringing our gallery spaces to life by welcoming and engaging visitors, as well as sharing your passion and the stories of our exhibitions.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Welcoming and engaging visitors in a warm and friendly manner
- Interpreting our gallery spaces, exhibition content, the Richmond Borough Art Collection and the gallery’s history for all ages and abilities
- Being a visible presence in our galleries, ensuring everyone's safety and the security of our exhibitions

Training and Support
We will provide training and an induction which covers all aspects of the role. On-going support and supervision will be provided by staff throughout your time with us. Additionally, there are regular training sessions to supplement and further your initial training, as well as a varied programme of volunteer events and activities to join in, meet people and learn something new!
We offer a tour of our exhibitions with the artist(s) or a member of staff prior to their opening. This will give you a first hand insight into the concept, processes and artist’s vision behind the exhibition.

Availability

Location
This role is based at Orleans House Gallery, in either the Main Gallery or Stables Gallery.
Expenses
We will cover travel expenses up to £17 per day.

As a volunteer, you might…
- Work creatively alongside students and participants and act as a ‘creative partner’ to support their ideas; Provide access support for students and participants including note-taking, accessing sensory tool, repeating instructions, etc.;

Organisation Overview
Clean Break provides Theatre and writing based opportunities, including workshops from our studios in Kentish Town NW5 for women who have lived experience through the Criminal Justice System or women at risk of offending with drug/alcohol and/or mental health needs. We are a trauma informed centre, we work in a safe, women-only environment, creating opportunities for women to develop personal, social, artistic and professional skills.

Purpose/Summary of role
We are looking for two enthusiastic volunteers to be a part of the Young Company programme. To support the development, confidence, and wellbeing of young women aged 18-25 through engaging group activities, acting, drama, rehearsals, theatre skills training and a safe, inclusive environment. This role is a one-yearplacement. October 2025- July 2026
Description of tasks
Key Responsibilities:
- · Build positive working relationships with young people
- · Assist with the lead facilitator(s) workshops, group games, or discussions
- · Provide a listening ear and positive encouragement
- · Ensure safeguarding policies are followed at all times
- · Assist fellow volunteer and lead facilitator(s) with setup and tidying of the space
- Encourage young people’s participation and creativity
Time Commitment
Acting, drama and theatre skills training
These sessions will be delivered by our, Drama School partners and Clean Break Artists. The Young Company Support Worker will be on hand for any support needs outside of the space.

The Company will rehearse and perform a short play by Emma Dennis Edwards, commissioned playwright for the Young Company. The play will be directed by Clean Break’s Associate Artistic Director and will be produced at a London venue, for audiences of loved ones, peers and public.
