The Stuart Hall Foundation is inspired by the life’s work of Professor Stuart Hall in the interlocking worlds of activism, academia and the arts. Hall’s work was characterised by its breadth and its interdisciplinary nature, spanning across cultural studies, media theory, political analysis, and the study of race and identity.

The Foundation was formally launched in 2015 by Hall’s family, friends and colleagues in order to commemorate his legacy by attending to the urgent political, social and cultural questions of our time.

Our mission

The Foundation focuses on achieving a more progressive and just society through public education, artistic and intellectual initiatives. Our mission is to popularise critical thought by reshaping public discourse and by supporting the development of a new generation of artists, academics and activists who are dedicated to challenging issues of inequality.

We work on our mission through three strands of activity:

• With institutional partners we offer scholarships, fellowships, artist residencies and commissions.
• We create free-to-access digital learning resources including recorded lectures and conversations, podcasts, written essays and artistic commissions.
• We provide digital and physical spaces for the public and for our network of scholars, fellows and artists to exchange and generate new ideas together.

Our organisation is now at a moment of transition, and we are looking to recruit a new Chair of Trustees. We have been successful in recent grant funding applications, and as a result the Foundation has been able to expand its activities and is financially secure for the next two years. The new Chair of Trustees will continue to build and lead the Foundation with a distinct identity as a public education charity working in service of social justice.

Chair of Trustees

We are looking to appoint a new Chair who has a demonstrable commitment to the Foundation with the ability to lead and manage a unique and growing national charity. 

The Chair has responsibility for providing oversight, shaping strategy and working collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to further develop the organisation’s vision for the next three to five years. The Chair will also support the Vice Chair in overseeing financial management and external relations. The role is not accompanied by any financial remuneration.

We are proud of the work we have achieved so far, having partnered with higher education and cultural institutions, organised many public events and provided scholarships, fellowships, awards and residencies.

The successful applicant will be a strong public voice for the Foundation and bring creativity and commitment to the role. We want to hear from candidates who share Hall's interests and values, and who want to help us build on his legacy by generating new ideas that change public understanding of the political landscape.

We are looking for someone who shares our values to join us as a Trustee and Manager of our Bursary Programme, funding music lessons for children and young people in Surrey who would not otherwise be able to afford them.

Specific Tasks

• To ensure smooth running of the bursary applications process for recipients, delivery partners and the bursary administrator
• To oversee applications where required, approving invoices and tracking budgets
• To monitor and refine the bursaries criteria and process to ensure the Trust is targeting bursaries effectively
• To work with the Bursary Administrator to assist with individual applications, refer approvals to the board where required, check and approve invoices

• To work with the Music Education Trustee to ensure that the criteria and process for CKTs bursaries maximises CKT’s impact

• To work with other partner organisations (Future Talent, AYM) to agree and monitor bursaries offered

The Role: Secretary Trustee

We are seeking a new trustee to join our board who can take on the responsibilities of Secretary to the Board. This role is key in ensuring our board functions effectively and meets its legal obligations. The ideal candidate will have some experience or understanding of Human Resources (HR), as we value thoughtful, fair and informed support in matters relating to staff and volunteer welfare.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure accurate and timely documentation of board meetings (e.g. minutes, agendas).
• Support the Chair in preparing and circulating meeting papers.
• Maintain records in line with charity governance requirements.
• Help to ensure compliance with statutory duties (e.g. Companies House, Charity Commission filings).
• Provide oversight and support on HR matters, including policy reviews and recruitment processes, where relevant.
• Contribute actively to board discussions and strategic direction.
• Act as an ambassador for DOCA and support its mission and values.

Outside Edge Theatre Company, which is the UK’s only theatre company and participatory arts charity focused on addiction, is recruiting our next Chair of the Board of Trustees.

For the past 25 years, we have created theatre productions about issues related to addiction and offered free drama activities to help people at-risk and affected by addiction to live healthier lives. Over the last year we supported 837 people, and they attended 504 creative activity sessions a total of 5,408 times.

Our inclusive weekly arts activities encourage service users and audiences to develop healthy habits, discover new talents and reclaim centre stage in their own lives. In addition to our work with people in recovery, Outside Edge is a producing theatre company that makes work about issues related to addiction. We are looking for someone who shares our values to join us as a Music Education Trustee, maximising the impact of our music education strategy in helping children and young people from families on low income in Surrey to make music.

Specific Tasks

Identifying, developing and overseeing appropriate group teaching and ensemble projects in primary and secondary schools with high pupil premium ratios. Such  projects will be funded or co-funded by CKT but delivered by other established music education providers 

Managing CKT’ s interface with

• Surrey Arts (including at chief executive and area manager level),
• Surrey state schools  as potential beneficiaries of CKT’s work
• other providers of music education in Surrey including Rock Schools

Working with:

• CKTs music education advisers to help define and deliver the above
• the bursaries trustee/manager to ensure that the criteria and process for CKTs bursaries maximises CKT’s impact
• the marketing and communications manager to best market what CKT offers to schools and music teachers
• Trustees, taking the lead on fundraising in developing applications for grants to fund CKT’s project work
• Acting as one of CKT’s Trustees and Directors attending and contributing to board meetings

Skills and experience required

In depth experience of music education at primary and/or secondary level

This will probably have been gained through practical experience either as a successful school head of music and/or in a county music service and/or in a music education charity or provider  

This is a prestigious voluntary opportunity to play a key role in the governance of Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site (WHS) and contribute to protecting the WHS for current and future generations.

This is a new role in the WHS Partnership, supporting the group of 30 local and national partners to carry out its role effectively. Who They Are

The Rebecca Swift Foundation (RSF) is a registered charity dedicated to uplifting and supporting women poets across the UK to achieve their full creative potential. Established in memory of the poet and editor Rebecca Swift, the Foundation works to advance the craft, creativity, and wellbeing of women poets through its flagship initiatives, including the Women Poets’ Prize, the Women Poets’ Network, and the Women Poets’ Festival.

To date, RSF has directly supported over 2,500 women poets through prizes, events, training opportunities, and membership activities, with alumnae featured in leading publications such as The Guardian and The Telegraph. Its work is guided by a strong ethos of accessibility: services are low-cost or free wherever possible, in recognition of the financial precarity experienced by many women poets.

The Role

The Rebecca Swift Foundation is seeking a new Chair to help guide the organisation beyond its current Arts Council England funded programme. The Chair will work closely with the Board of Trustees and Project Manager to align the Foundation’s long-term strategy with its ambitions to expand reach, secure financial sustainability, and maintain its commitment to equity and inclusion.

RSF is also recruiting new Trustees to strengthen the Board with expertise in areas such as fundraising, governance, advocacy, income generation, community development, and sector connections. While direct experience in poetry is not required, an interest in literary creativity and a commitment to amplifying women’s voices are essential.

Responsibilities of Trustees

• Attend quarterly Board meetings (currently online) and relevant working groups

• Agree and monitor RSF’s strategy, ensuring delivery of its charitable objectives

• Ensure legal, charitable, and financial compliance and uphold best practice

• Safeguard the financial stability of the organisation, supporting income generation through grants, donations, and partnerships

• Oversee recruitment and performance of the Project Manager and any future staff

• Use personal skills and expertise to strengthen Board decision-making

• Promote and uphold the Foundation’s values and activities

What They Are Looking For

• A Chair with fundraising, governance, and strategy experience; prior non-executive board experience is desirable

• Trustees with knowledge of the literary landscape, or transferable skills in advocacy, partnerships, community development, and income generation

Commitment and Terms

• Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term, renewable for a second, with a third term possible by special resolution

• Four Board meetings per year, plus occasional working groups, training, or events

• The role is voluntary; reasonable travel and related expenses are reimbursed

• Applicants must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK

Eligibility

Trustees must meet Charity Commission requirements. Individuals are disqualified if they:

• Have an unspent conviction for dishonesty or deception

• Are bankrupt or subject to an individual voluntary arrangement

• Have been removed as a company director or charity trustee due to misconduct

We are looking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees to join our Board in December 2025. 

At an exciting point in Kids in Museums’ development, the new Chair will play an instrumental role in shaping the charity’s future. They will be passionate about access to culture and heritage and able to lead organisational development that is grounded in our mission and values. 

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone:

• with a deep understanding of the UK museum sector,

• experience of developing long-term strategies for growth,

• skilled at nurturing strong partnerships, 

• who values Kids in Museums’ unique sector support programme, 

• who would be committed to our work and advocating for the people and organisations we support. 

Founded in 2003, Kids in Museums has grown into an influential national charity that supports significant change in museums through powerful national programmes. Our mission is to work with museums nationwide to make them more welcoming for children, young people and families. We lead and support the sector to address ingrained inequalities to access, set standards of best practice in work with children, families and young people, build a skilled museum workforce and empower young people to become decision makers across the sector.

Guided by our mission and values, the new Chair will collaboratively lead the Board and staff team to embed sustainable organisational development which supports the charity’s ambitions and the growing, changing needs of the museum sector.
