The Science Council is a membership organisation of over 30 professional bodies and learned societies from across the scientific disciplines, providing the quality assurance system for those working in science. We play a unique and valuable role in ensuring public trust and confidence in the scientific workforce and transparency in the process of science.
We are looking for an ambitious, financially literate Treasurer who has the vision and commitment to help grow the Science Council into an increasingly respected, influential, and sustainable organisation. They will bring financial knowledge and strategic insight to the role and advise on growth plans and how we can maximise the use of our assets. A financial qualification is desirable but a strong understanding and experience of financial management and accounting within the voluntary, trade or membership body sectors, and strong business and financial acumen is essential.

We are excited to share this great opportunity to join our Board of Directors.It is a very important time for Cornerstone, as we set a course for the future, with our strategy ‘Future proofing Cornerstone’.
As a member of our Board, you will be instrumental in guiding the strategic future of the charity and ensuring exemplary governance and fiscal control. The main Board meets four times a year and board members will be expected to be a member of one of the sub committees. You will also act as a local ambassador for Cornerstone.
We are particularly keen to hear from those with skills, knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas who feel they can make a positive contribution to our charitable activities: -
- Management experience in social care quality standards, compliance, commissioning and / or procurement
- Senior management experience in the social work / social care sector preferably with strategic planning skills
- Accountancy/financial experience preferably at management level
- Personal experience of providing care and support of a relative or carer of a person who has experience of care

We are looking for three lay members to join our Council and work with our highly committed staff team to support us in achieving our vision of everyone being empowered to improve health and wellbeing through nutrition grounded in science.
We offer Trustees valuable experience in working with a small, well-run organisation, and exposure to all aspects of strategic planning, governance and financial management at Board level.
About Us
The Association for Nutrition is the independent, voluntary regulator for registered Nutritionists in the UK.
In 2020 we began working to a new strategic plan designed to pursue the achievement of our vision through high standards for education, training and practice, increased recognition for our register and the value of the nutrition profession, and support for our registrants to be effective in their roles through clear guidance, CPD framework and robust regulation.
We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, governed by a Council, who are the Trustees and Directors of the Association.
About the role
Lay members bring an independent viewpoint and scrutiny, which we believe is vital for good governance.
We are seeking to recruit lay Trustees who can bring their experience and knowledge to our decision making processes and support the shaping of our strategic direction and activities.
Previous experience as a Trustee is not essential, although experience at board/management level would be beneficial and training will be provided.
We particularly welcome applications from people with characteristics which may be underrepresented in leadership and trustee positions.
Duration of Term
- Trustees may serve a term of 3-years and are eligible for re-appointment up to a maximum of 2 terms.
Remuneration
- Trustees are honorary roles which, in accordance with Charity Commission rules, are unremunerated. Although reasonable expenses for travel may be claimed if in-person meetings are required.
Time Commitment
- Attendance at 3 Council meetings per annum plus reading and preparation for meetings, which equates to approximately six days per annum.
- We hold some meetings via videoconference and some meetings in person. In person meetings are normally held in London, usually with an option to join remotely.
- Trustees may also be offered the opportunity to join one of our standing committees, depending upon the particular expertise and experience they could bring to the role.
Skills and competencies of our Trustees
- A commitment to protecting, promoting and maintaining the health, safety and wellbeing of the public.
- The ability to analyse complex information to inform decisions.
- The ability to contribute a strategic view and make balanced decisions in an open, collaborative and constructive manner.
- The ability to challenge and question constructively, with a sense of collective responsibility.
- An understanding of the contribution and impact made by the regulation of professionals.
- A high level of probity, integrity, objectivity and fairness, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and commitment to equality and diversity
- An understanding and commitment to good governance and to the Nolan Principles of public life.
In addition to the above, at this time we are particularly interested in receiving applications from people who could contribute one or more of the following
- Experience in promoting and supporting equality, equity and inclusion.
- Experience of contributing to the leadership of an organisation in the public, private or voluntary sector.
- Experience in finance and accounting.
- Experience of regulatory systems or the quality assurance of education and training.
Eligibility
- A lay member must not be, nor be eligible to be, a registrant on the United Kingdom Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), or on the registers of nutrition related professions.
- A trustee must not be disqualified under either the Charities Act or Finance Act. Disqualification criteria includes being disqualified as a company director, having an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty or deception, involvement in tax fraud, be undischarged bankrupt or have a current composition or arrangement including an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) with creditors, having been removed as a trustee of any charity by the Commission (or the court) because of misconduct or mismanagement, being on the sex offenders’ register

We are Knottingley Foodbank, providing emergency food and compassionate, practical support to people in crisis. Since 2013 we have operated in the Knottingley area and are currently based at Ropewalk Methodist Church, providing 1,714 three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis last year. Our foodbank is a project founded by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in our local area.
As a Trustee you will play a vital role by ensuring that we are meeting the demand for our services, providing help and support to people in crisis in the local community, as well as providing strategic direction for the charity.
Trustees have collective responsibility for the governance of the organisation and for all decisions made by the Board. They set the strategic direction for the organisation, ensuring alignment to our values, and are responsible for setting organisational policy, defining goals, agreeing the financial plan, evaluating performance, and ensuring that strong relationships are maintained between the Trustees and the Senior Leadership Group.
About you:
Knottingley Foodbank are looking for people who want to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty whilst support the food bank to continue to provide emergency food to people who find themselves in crisis. We are seeking to recruit Trustees with an interest in helping others, who are willing to uphold the food bank’s values, and who can bring life experience to the board of trustees.Our ideal candidates would demonstrate a:
- Knowledge of and commitment to the work of Knottingley Foodbank.
- Willingness to actively participate in discussions concerning needs of the foodbank’s beneficiaries, staff, and the trustee board.
- Willingness to act in the best interest of the charity.
- Sound, independent judgement and ability to think creatively.
- Working effectively as a team member and demonstrating a willingness to learn and develop.
