Who we are

Brockenhurst College, known locally as Brock, is a welcoming and inclusive further education college based in the heart of the New Forest. At Brock, we place learners at the heart of everything we do and have a strong reputation for delivering excellence in teaching and learning, as well as effective all-round student support. All students are supported in strengthening and developing both their academic and personal skills, learning to take responsibility for their own development, to support positive onward progression from the College.

About the role

We seek new Governors to become members of both the Board and at least one other committee, depending on their specialist knowledge and interests. In addition to attending scheduled meetings throughout the year, we encourage Governors to experience the College by linking them with senior leaders and different departments, providing opportunities for them to visit the campuses and meet and speak with students, apprentices and staff.

Make a difference – become a school governor

You do not have to be a parent or member of staff to be a school governor – applications are appreciated from all with an interest in the local community. School governors come from all walks of life and specialist knowledge is not always needed. What IS essential is a desire to get involved in children’s education and make a difference to their lives.

We welcome applications from those with educational, health & safety and safeguarding experience but school governors are all volunteers and training and support is provided. The University of Chichester (Multi) Academy Trust partners new governors with a ‘buddy’ – a trusted and more experienced colleague on the governing body – who initially acts as their mentor. Briefing information and assistance is also available through newsletters, websites and helplines provided by the Department for Education.

About the role

Our Board is a collaborative and inclusive body formed of up to 20 members, up to 15 of whom are independent Governors. We have a diversity of expertise as well as thought, which helps our Board ensure that we continue to have a group of committed and determined volunteer non-executives who each share in the vision and mission of our college.

Our governors each share the responsibility for developing our organisational strategy and for setting the educational character of our college. They model the behaviours we expect from our staff and our students, which helps us to sustain such a vibrant culture across the College and they are each a positive and vocal ambassador for the work that we do.

Having given consideration to our strategy and the future aspirations of our colleges, we have identified a need to add further depth to our Board, and more specifically, we seek to appoint candidates who will bring experience in the areas of:

• Financial leadership and strategy
• Audit
• Risk mitigation

We are looking for professionals who will use their experience and expertise within their professional field to offer appropriate levels of challenge, scrutiny and support as we continue to achieve our strategic objectives and improve student outcomes. We’re Foothold, and we’re looking for a new Honorary Treasurer.
Our Trustees play a big part in helping us to achieve our strategic objectives and meet the needs of those we’re committed to support: engineers and their families worldwide.
 

What will you be doing?

Our Trustees get together five times a year for a mixture of virtual and in-person meetings (four Board meetings and one training day with staff), as well as spending time before meetings reading the Board papers and preparing, totaling a commitment of 50–70 hours a year of their time.
They’re responsible for providing strategic direction and making key decisions to ensure we’re delivering on our objectives.
They serve on three Committees.

 

What are we looking for?

Financial and audit/risk experience (a recognised financial qualification is desirable) and strong knowledge of Statements of Recommended Practice, charity and company law and United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.
Experience gained as Trustee or Non-Executive Director in a similarly complex service-orientated  organisation.
Strong understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship.

Bardet-Biedl Syndrome UK (BBS UK) is seeking a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and play a key role in ensuring the charity remains financially strong, sustainable, and well governed.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare, complex genetic condition that causes blindness, learning disabilities, obesity, and a range of additional health challenges. BBS UK is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by BBS.

We provide advocacy services, NHS clinic support, publications, and community events that help people navigate life with BBS. Each year, we support over 700 individuals, working alongside a small team of dedicated part-time staff and committed volunteers.

It’s an exciting time to join our charity. We are looking to strengthen our governance and build on our financial foundations to support future growth and impact.

The role

As Treasurer, you will oversee the financial governance of BBS UK, working closely with the Board of Trustees, Operations Manager, and external accountant.

This is a strategic oversight role, not a hands-on bookkeeping position. Day-to-day financial administration is carried out by staff; the Treasurer provides assurance, guidance, and clarity to support good decision-making.

Key responsibilities include:

• Maintaining a strategic overview of the charity’s financial health

• Presenting clear summaries of financial information at Board meetings

• Advising Trustees on the financial implications of plans and decisions

• Overseeing the annual budget and supporting longer-term financial planning

• Ensuring appropriate financial controls and procedures are in place

• Supporting the preparation of annual accounts and liaison with the Independent Examiner

• Helping ensure appropriate reserves are maintained in line with policy

The Board of Trustees retains collective responsibility for the charity’s finances.

We’re looking for someone with:

Essential:

• Experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or financial oversight

• Confidence interpreting financial information and explaining it clearly to non-financial colleagues

• Understanding of financial controls and good governance

• Ability to think strategically and identify financial risks

Desirable:

• Experience in a charity or not-for-profit setting

• Understanding of restricted and unrestricted funds

• Experience working with budgets or management accounts

We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of BBS or a connection to the BBS community, though this is not essential.

As a BBS UK Trustee, you will have:

• Induction, training, and ongoing support

• Reasonable expenses reimbursed

Time commitment
