About Us
Frank Parkinson was a pioneering electrical engineer, notable for the early development of electric lighting and motors. He and his brother established a company in their hometown of Guiseley, West Yorkshire, which prospered and became Crompton Parkinson. When he died in 1946, Frank left a large part of his considerable fortune to establish the Trust, and we focus on the following:
- Providing inclusive, low-cost accommodation to older adults (and others by exception) registered as living in the wards of Leeds and Bradford who are experiencing socio-economic deprivation and/or adverse consequences of increased costs of living.
- Investing in the local community to help address the wider determinants of health and wellbeing.
- Providing educational opportunities for the local population in the fields of information technology and engineering through working with partner organisations (e.g. voluntary and community social enterprises, higher education institutions).
Under the wider objectives of the Trust, we also make grants to other registered charities within the Guiseley area, where their aims align with ours. For example, we have provided ongoing support to a local charity catering for the needs of older adults with living disabilities by funding the purchase of a minibus. This facility has enabled them to go shopping and access other local amenities.
Background to the roles
The Board of the Frank Parkinson Yorkshire Trust currently comprises five Trustees including the Chair. We recognise the need to enhance the Board and welcome new Trustees who will bring energy and a range of knowledge and skills to support our important work. We are seeking motivated people who live locally or in the surrounding areas and who share our commitment to honour Frank Parkinson’s legacy by providing housing for older people and supporting local charities.
We’re looking for one or more trustees with a finance background as well as someone with a legal background, possibly in property law. Applications would also be welcome from people interested in our work who bring other skills and experience, for example, social housing, property, charity governance, or older people.
Main Responsibilities
Finance Trustees(s)
The role of the Finance Trustee(s) is to oversee, approve and present budgets, accounts, and financial statements as well as the preparation and presentation of financial reports to the board. In addition, ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place and liaise with the Operations Manager about financial matters.
Legal Trustee (property)
This role will provide expert legal advice on property-related matters, including leases, compliance, and risk management. You will support the strategic oversight of our property portfolio, ensuring legal integrity, regulatory compliance, and alignment with charitable objectives.
General Trustees
These roles will support our work by bringing professional skills and experience from other areas such as social care, work with older people, buildings and property, and charity governance. You will support our work, ensuring we deliver on our strategy and are providing the best, most appropriate care to our residents. Trustees are valued ‘critical friends’ and your input will be invaluable.

As a Trustee of Durham Action on Single Housing (DASH), you will work alongside other board members to provide strategic leadership and governance to the charity. Balance Support CIO is a specialist provider of learning disabilities services across SW London. We are seeking new trustees to support the charity's widening strategic partnerships and business growth.

Reshaping our Board
Balance has trustees with substantial experience across a range of disciplines from housing law to management consultancy and information technology. This experience and knowledge have been critical in supporting the charity's executive leadership restructure operations and qaulity assurance standandards.
As a result they have steered the charitys growth and development increasing turnover from £2.3 Million in 2022 to £4.2 Million in 2024. With additional new work likely in 2025, the board see's strengthening it's knowledge and specialisms as critical in leading this new phase of our development.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for new trustees who have a commitment to driving high quality and empowering social care services. You will recognise the importance of your role in being both a critical friend to the executive leadership as well as an expert in your given field.

Where you live
We are a charity based in Kingston with operations across a number of boroughs in SW and Central London. Whilst insight and knowledge of SW london may be an advantage, our flexible approach to attending board meetings in person or online offers wider opportunities for participation from beyond the charity's base.

At PBE we use economics to improve lives. Through analytical expertise and our close connection with the social sector, we help charities, funders, firms and policymakers tackle the causes and consequences of low wellbeing.
Right now, more than 3 million adults in the UK are living in wellbeing poverty. We want to change that.
Our team of analysts, researchers and economists work on a wide range of issues related to low wellbeing, including mental health, education, employment, financial security, poverty, disability, inequality, volunteering and civil society. Our current focus areas are loneliness, children and young people’s mental health and private rental housing. We were founded in 2009 by Andy Haldane, former Chief Economist of the Bank of England, and Martin Brookes, former economist at the Bank of England and Goldman Sachs. We are seeking one or two trustees with fundraising experience. You will have the drive and commitment to support our strategic development and help build our network, reach, and funding base. Fundraising
- Ensure, via membership of main Board, that PBE has an effective and sustainable fundraising strategy to underpin its business plan and future ambitions.
- Be a member of the Development Committee, which provides more specialist advice and guidance to the Director of Development and team.
- Be a champion for fundraising, increasing knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm across the full set of trustees and other supporters (e.g., patrons).

Board responsibilities:
Governance
- Ensure PBE has a clear vision and strategic direction and that we are focused on carrying out our purpose for public benefit.
- Delegate authority to the CEO within the terms of the strategic plan and approve key performance indicators.
- Appoint and remove the CEO and monitor, support and hold him to account for the delegated functions.
Compliance
- Ensure that we comply with our governing documents, legal and regulatory requirements and take final responsibility (as per the Memorandum of Association) for PBE.
Judgement
- Make balanced, informed decisions, be prepared to question and challenge when necessary, and help maintain a balanced, constructive relationship between the board and the executive.
Resource oversight
- Ensure resources are deployed effectively.
- Ensure that plans and budgets are in keeping with the aims of the organisation.
- Approve budgets to ensure PBE continues to manage cash flows and reserves prudently.
Accountability
- Ensure that our governance is of the highest possible standard, act with all due care and skill and manage all risks – financial, reputational and others – efficiently and effectively.
Engagement
- Monitor the operating environment in which PBE works, address emerging issues that may impact on our strategy, planning or reputation with key stakeholders; ensure that we retain our ethos, values and standards and offer advice to the CEO and board on areas of personal experience and expertise.

We provide a wide range of academic, vocational and apprenticeship qualifications from entry to degree level, along with support services to help our students achieve their goals. The College has grown significantly over the past 10 years and is currently home to a population of over 8,000 students studying full-time, part-time, higher education and apprenticeship programmes with us.

In 2019, NSCG became the first further education provider in England to achieve the top grade of Outstanding in every area of Ofsted’s reformed Education Inspection Framework.
When we were inspected again in October 2024, we were able to demonstrate the continued consistency of our provision by once again achieving the same result – Outstanding in every area!
The latest inspection report praised all areas of our provision, acknowledging the pace at which our students make progress in their learning as well as the high aspirations that our leaders have by commenting that “with clarity and passion, leaders set high expectations for staff and learners” whilst also highlighting the extensive investment we have made in state-of-the-art facilities across the college.

About the role
The NSCG Corporation is the College’s governing body and currently comprises 16 members. Our board members provide representation from local businesses, local councils and community groups as well from our staff team and our student body.
Through their role on our Corporation Board, our members represent the particular interests of the local community and public interest in general. They oversee the way the College is run, ensuring it meets the needs of the local community, school leavers and employers.
It ensures the highest professional and ethical standards as well as the effective use of resources. Governors are responsible for the financial solvency of the institution, the proper use of public funds, sound management and the quality of education, training and business service provided. Perhaps even more importantly, our Governors set the tone of our organisation, shape our culture and help define the values through which we work.

Audit Committee
Firstly, we will welcome candidates with expertise and experience gained in the areas highlighted below. Candidates will not only be motivated to join our Board but will also be able to commit the time to joining our Audit Committee.
- Qualified senior audit professionals
- Senior risk and compliance professionals
- Senior professionals with expertise in data protection and/or cyber security
- Qualified finance professionals
Education & Standards Committee
We also seek applications from strategic leaders from across the wider education sector. This experience could come from those working within the higher education sector, in local secondary schools, multi-academy trusts, independent training providers, specialist SEND providers, or the further education sector itself.
We will also welcome applications from candidates who are based within large employers but who have an understanding and appreciation of the impacts that our provision has on their workforce. We believe such candidates will offer valuable insights into the future development of our curriculum.
Successful candidates with this particular experience will be appointed to our full Board as well as our Education & Standards Committee, which currently has eight other members.
Finance & General Purposes Committee
Finally, we also seek to appoint a new member to our board who is an experienced, senior and strategically focused, qualified, finance professional. Whilst candidates may have professional expertise as a senior financial leader, they may also have additional experience of working in more board operational roles which encompass responsibilities linked to estates and resource functions.
The successful candidate will be appointed to our full Board as well as our Finance & General Purposes Committee, on which there are currently six other members.
Expectations and commitment
Successful candidates will be appointed on the basis of a four-year term of office.
Whilst previous governance experience is not essential, candidates will need to be able demonstrate an understanding of the principles of good governance and how these should be implemented to discharge fiduciary responsibilities in the context of a non-executive board.
You will be able to apply your specialist knowledge and expertise to contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making by working constructively as part of a non-executive team whilst demonstrating an understanding that Governors must act fairly and impartially, with a commitment to the principles of safeguarding, equality and diversity.
The appointed candidates will be expected to attend five meetings of the Board each year, and the frequency of our Committee meetings varies as below:
- Education & Standards Committee: four meetings per year
- Audit Committee: three meetings per year
- Finance & General Purposes Committee: three meetings per year
We try to always ensure that meetings are held in person as this allows governors to experience the vibrant College atmosphere whilst on site.
Governors usually dedicate an average of around 10 hours per month to their role, which includes meeting preparation, attendance and follow-up. However, we are privileged that our Governors also dedicate additional time to the College. They each spend time each term, visiting our sites, engaging with our staff and students, and use this as a chance to see our impacts first-hand. We hope to receive applications from individuals who would be open to offering a similar level of commitment to our organisation.
All of our Governors are supported throughout their terms of office. Induction, training and development opportunities are all available, as well as the invitation to attend a range of exciting events and ceremonies throughout the year. We are looking for a new Honorary Treasurer for the BPA.
This is a good opportunity for someone who wishes to be part of the financial decision-making process of the BPA and to learn how the organisational side of the BPA functions.
The Hon. Treasurer works closely with the Finance Committee, the Board, the Executive and the General Manager. There is a strong financial team at the BPA. The Vice Chair provides crucial support to the Chair and the Board of Trustees, ensuring the charity's smooth operation and strategic direction. You will act as a deputy, take on additional tasks, and help manage the chair's workload. The Vice Chair's role can vary, but generally involves supporting the chair, acting as a sounding board, and sharing responsibilities.
Duties can involve:
