We provide a myriad of services in Essex and Medway; drug and alcohol support, homelessness services, domestic abuse support, criminal justice services, employment support, welfare and community initiatives to promote community safety and combat anti-social behaviour. We help vulnerable people, young and old, throughout Essex and Medway, and work in the heart of local communities. We are not a large national faceless charity; we are very much a grassroots organisation. How Do Open Road’s Trustees Support The Charity?
The role of the Trustee is to assist in advancing the purpose of the organisation; developing its aims and goals, keeping within its charitable objectives and acting in its best interests. The board members ensure that the charity is run in accordance with its governing document, charity law, and any other laws and regulations which affect its activities.
Our Trustee Board are responsible for developing strategy, providing governance, and directing the charity towards achieving its mission. We are looking to appoint two new trustees – the first being from the building and maintenance sector – with the experience and knowledge to support the health and safety responsibilities of a growing charity, and the second being a HR professional who will chair our Personnel Sub Committee with special responsibility for oversight of the organisation’s HR function and strategy, ideally you will be a Chartered Member or Fellow of the CIPD with substantial experience at a Senior/Director HR professional level with a thorough understanding of operational HR policy and practice.
An understanding of the role of charity boards and their responsibilities and operation, gained through previous experience would be helpful, and above all else you will be intrinsically values-driven and committed to enabling more individuals we support to live their lives to the full.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT – Charity Trustee
REMUNERATION:
- This role is unremunerated and offered on a voluntary basis.
- Trustees are encouraged to visit services that are local to them.
- Travel and accommodation expenses are reimbursed for meetings & visits.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- The time commitment is at least one day a month.
- There are six board meetings a year and this includes an annual strategy setting day.
- Board meetings are held in person in Central London.
- All trustees are expected to participate on at least one committee and there are four committee meetings a year.
- Committee meetings are held in person/virtually.
Key responsibilities:
- To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the strategic aims of the
- organisation.
- Working with other trustees to ensure that the policy and practices of the organisation

We are looking for a new Honorary Treasurer for the BPA.

Friends of Ibba Girls School (FIGS) works to support a girls’ boarding school which provides free high-quality education for over 300 primary and secondary school girls, providing both education and a source of inspiration for the country. Boarding provides safety and security for girls in a country emerging from war. FIGS works closely with Windle Trust International, a highly experienced UK charity which provides the practical support on the ground in South Sudan. FIGS must raise £400-500k each year to keep the school thriving, while longer-term plans are put in place for greater self-sufficiency within the country. The trustees are both strategic and operational, as the charity only has 2 employees (1.5 FTE). Fundraising skills and experience are particularly sought and the trustee will need to be prepared to give about eight hours a week to the work. Communications is also important and needs about four hours a week. HR and IT are both valuable skills but do not have particular time requirements. Our Mission
Brain tumours do not discriminate, and they do not respect boundaries. They can strike anyone, at any age. And they strike quickly.
The Scottish Steering Committee (SSC) is our voluntary group who drive policy, campaigning and influencing work in Scotland, with the support of The Charity. It aims to represent the views of the community in Scotland and be a solution orientated advisory board to help achieve agreed objectives.
An ambitious and dedicated group, members previously agreed that the key objective of the Committee would be to campaign for a faster diagnosis for those affected by a brain tumour. Their aim is to achieve this through influencing, supporting and campaigning to improve all aspects of the diagnostic journey. Two years after setting this objective, as per the Committee’s terms of reference, we are now seeking new members to join and advocate for change in Scotland.
How can you help?
To achieve these ambitions – the Committee is now seeking five new members with particular experiences and skill sets that can help drive and enable the Committee to achieve its ambitions.
Your experience and skills will provide valuable input during SSC meetings but won’t be limited to just that – you can actively engage with stakeholders across Scotland and the wider UK, contribute to the creation of our policy positions in Scotland and raise the voice of the community across Scotland and beyond.
What impact will you have?
You will be a core member of a group that is seeking to improve outcomes for all those affected by brain tumours in Scotland.
We’re looking for...
People with experiences, knowledge and skills that can actively contribute to the operation of the SSC. This includes but is not limited to:

Experience of being personally affected by a brain tumour in Scotland

Clinician who is involved with brain tumours in some capacity

Experience of working within Scottish Public Affairs or within a Commercial Landscape and environment

Experience of working within Public Relations or media management
However, all applications will be considered, and we seek to have as varied a skillset as possible with a range of different experiences to have as much representation across Scotland as possible.
We particularly encourage applications from those who are significantly underrepresented in our sector, including individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

Practical considerations
You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction from one of the team, who will be your key contact. We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18. We encourage volunteers to claim for any reasonable expenses that are incurred in the course of their volunteering with the Charity. The Deadline for applications is Monday 30 June at 5pm but we may close early if we receive a high number of applications.

SASS are recruiting two Co Deputy Chairs to play an important role in leading the charity’s voluntary Board of Trustees. Our current Chair intends to step down as Chair, but with a desire to remain on the Board as a Trustee. As part of our succession planning, these two roles are being created with a view to dividing the responsibilities of the current Chair when they step down, probably at the end of 2025. One of the Co Deputy’s will assume the role of Chair Designate and the other a permanent Deputy Chair position.
Role Description - Deputy Chair
- Support the work of the Chair, and deputise where necessary, in the execution of the following responsibilities, in order to:
- Provide leadership to the charity and its Board, to ensure it operates within its charitable objectives, with a clear strategic direction.
- Ensure that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for effective governance.
- Ensure that meetings are regular and effective.
- Work with the Chair to ensure effective and timely recommendations to the Board.
Overarching responsibilities to be shared across both the Chair and Deputy Chair positions
Governance – to encourage high standards and promote the efficient and effective use of
resources throughout the organisation.
Strategic Leadership – to take a leading role in the development, implementation and regular monitoring of the organisation’s strategy.
Board development – to lead the development of Board of Trustees, ensuring that the Board is operating effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with charity law, working to best practice as set out in the Charity Governance Code.
Who we are looking for - skills, knowledge & attributes
- Experience of being either a Trustee or a volunteer of a charity OR as a senior member of staff of a voluntary organisation.
- A keen sense of strategic purpose.
- Understanding the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
- An inclusive leadership style: able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing.
- Experience of external representation is desirable.
- The ability to listen and engage effectively.
- Comfortable with challenge and debate, are able to encourage that in others whilst fostering collaboration.
- An understanding of issues facing refugees and asylum seekers.
- Lived experience is desirable.
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Responsive to need. As a small charity, unexpected and unforeseen situations arise that will require the Chair and Deputy Chair to advise, support or consent to a course of action.
- Willingness to lead according to SASS’s values.
