You could be a trustee for the Mustard Tree, a Reading-based Christian charity that reduces health and social inequalities, builds stronger communities, and gives a voice to the unheard.

About us

Set up in 2003, the Mustard Tree Foundation (Reading), known as The Mustard Tree, is a charity where we are passionate that every individual has the opportunity to thrive. Our vision is to develop the work we do in Reading, identifying unmet needs and innovating and growing projects which support individuals who are marginalised and facing disadvantage, delivering high-impact services to some of Reading’s most underrepresented people.  As a charity with a Christian ethos, the projects we generate are inspired by our faith and are thus are designed to serve all sections of our diverse community.

We are an incorporated charity, with a financial turnover in 2024 of £335k. Our three focused projects: Engage, Rahab and Starting Point, all support different communities, whilst linked to our common vision.

The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee

Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in our work and we’d expect new trustees to have strong empathy with our cause and with the needs of our beneficiaries. 

You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, although that would be welcome. You need to have a Christian faith and participate with us in prayer.

We are especially looking for people with skills and understanding of financial management in a not-for-private-profit context; a grasp of fundraising strategy; or understanding of HR management and compliance, but we don’t expect you to have all three of those abilities!

If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed by our trustees; you’ll also need to be able to work collectively with other Board members. Support from our paid employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day running of the organisation.

We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds to join our charity. We want to expand the diversity of our board, in all meanings of the word, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups. 

We ask for at least five hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc.  You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business is run that way.

The commitment from you...

Your passion, experience, knowledge (and time).We ask our trustees to commit to a monthly virtual meeting (approx. 1.5 hours), along with a few hours per month to support the staff team and deliver strategic goals. This is a minimum, but often trustees commit to take on additional responsibilities within projects, or within their specialities.

We are looking for a trustee who has personal experience of the care system as a looked- after child or care-experienced young person.  We need someone who has made it to and through university so that they can help us fully understand the challenges and issues that can occur.

We are looking for someone who cares about and wants to  help young people who are in the care system to make it to and through university. This is not about helping individual youngsters personally. We are building and funding programmes to enable others to help them more effectively.  

You need to be willing to be a trustee. This involves preparing for meetings by reading the papers, speaking up in meetings and sharing your opinions and experience, working with others on the board and with our education partners to develop ways we can fulfil our goal of increasing the number of care-experienced young people who successfully complete a degree and find work.

You need to be able to meet the time commitment which is to attend our (virtual) trustee meetings.  These are held on a Wednesday afternoon once a quarter – the dates are published well in advance.  We also get together, in person, for up to a full day once a year – again usually on a Wednesday. You will need to prepare for meetings and there may be the occasional other tasks so we recommend thinking of a time commitment of 2 -3 hours a month.

Previous experience as a charity trustee is highly desirable, but not essential, as you will have a full explanation of the duties and responsibilities of trustees during your induction.

As a member of the GACD Board of Trustees, you will provide strategic leadership and oversight for GACD as it seeks to fulfil its charitable objects. You will ensure GACD operates in accordance with its governing document and meets its legal and regulatory requirements. The role is voluntary, and trustees do not receive any renumeration for their contribution to the governance of GACD.

The appointment will commence in December 2025/January 2026 for a three-year term, in the first instance.

Why the role is important to us

Our trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of GACD, its financial health, integrity of its activities, and for setting and overseeing the delivery of the organisation’s aims and objectives. The Charity Commission’s Guidance ‘The essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do’ identifies the main duties of a trustee as to:

1. Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
2. Comply with the charity’s governing document and meets its legal and regulatory requirements
3. Act in the charity’s best interests
4. Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
5. Act with reasonable care and skill
6. Ensure the charity is accountable

What you will bring to the Board

The current Board members would particularly wish to seek a new trustee that offers experience in one or more of the following areas:

1. Prior governance experience, ideally in a charity context (essential)
2. Leadership or senior management experience within the charity sector and familiarity with UK charity regulation, legislation and operations (essential)
3. Applied health/medical research, or health research funding.
4. Communication strategies to enhance profile and impact.
5. Links to relevant networks and potential stakeholder organisations in chronic diseases.

What you will do

As a GACD trustee, you will:

1. Ensure that GACD has a clear strategy and that the goals are in line with GACD’s charitable objects.
2. Ensure GACD functions within all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and in line with its governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
3. Promote and develop GACD in order for it to grow and maintain its global public benefit (or to recognise the situation when it may be more appropriate to wind the charity up where there is no longer a need to provide the services it does or because the charitable objects are no longer relevant to contemporary social situations).
4. Ensure the effective and efficient administration of GACD and its resources in pursuit of its objects, striving for best practice in governance.
5. Ensure that key risks are identified, monitored, and mitigated effectively.
6. Take appropriate professional advice in all matters where there may be a material risk to GACD, or where the trustees may be in breach of their duties.
7. Provide strategic oversight, support and challenge to the Chief Executive.
8. Ensure the GACD has the proper arrangements in place for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the Chief Executive.
9. Safeguard the good name and values of GACD.

About you

You possess:

1. A willingness to commit to GACD and to devote the necessary time and effort (approximately four days annually, including scrutinising papers and meeting preparation time). Trustees are expected to attend all Board meetings.
2. Leadership and senior management experience with an ability to carry the confidence of colleagues.
3. An ability to be strategic and forward-looking in relation to the charity’s objects and aims.
4. Sound, independent judgment and a willingness to speak your mind, contributing to discussions.
5. An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and adhering to recognised principles of public life that include selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness and honesty and leadership.
6. Good communication, interpersonal, team working and decision-making skills and the ability to respect confidentiality to work effectively as a member of the Board.
7. A commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. 

Disqualification

Trustees must not be disqualified from acting as a trustee. You must not:

1. Have an unspent conviction for an offence involving deception or dishonesty (such as fraud).
2. Be bankrupt or have entered into a formal arrangement (e.g. an Individual Voluntary Arrangement).
3. Have been removed as a charity trustee because of wrongdoing.
4. Have an unspent conviction for:
   1. Specified terrorism offences
   2. A specified money laundering offence
   3. The offence of contravening a Charity Commission Order or Direction
   4. Offences of misconduct in public office, perjury, or perverting the course of justice
   5. For aiding, attempting or abetting the above offences.
5. Be on the sex offenders register.
6. Have an unspent sanction for contempt of Court.
7. Have disobeyed a Commission Order.
8. Be a designated person (under specific anti-terrorist legislation).

West Cheshire Foodbank was established in 2012 to provide emergency food to people in crisis. We are part of the Trussell network of foodbanks and last financial year we provided food to 14,500 people in the 12 months to March 2025. We can only do this with the commitment of our volunteers, our small, dedicated staff team and the much-valued support of local businesses, organisations and individuals.

We are now looking for two new trustees, with relevant experience, who share our vision for a future without the need for foodbanks. You do not need previous experience as a trustee to apply for these roles.

We welcome applications from people from all backgrounds and experience, particularly those who have lived experience of financial hardship and/or food insecurity. The successful candidates will be provided with an induction, training and support to help establish themselves in their roles.

Our Purpose is

1. to provide relief to individuals and families in crisis in West Cheshire, through the provision of emergency food supplies.
2. to provide practical, mental and spiritual support either directly or by referral to approved partner agencies to enable individuals and families avoid future crises.
3. to raise awareness of the causes of food poverty and to encourage both policy-makers and local people to take action.

Participation Trustee specific responsibilities

• Ensuring WCFB practice and strategic direction is informed by the voices of people with lived experience of food insecurity and financial hardship.
• Support the WCFB strategic lead to develop and implement the Participation Framework, including periodic reviews to assess progress, learning and impact.
• Support all trustees and members of the staff team to take a participatory approach where appropriate and enact the principles of participation.
• Model a participatory way of working to ensure voices of lived experience are amplified and help inform and influence key decisions at Board level.
• Ensure trustees are informed of the impact of national and local policy changes for people using WCFB with implications for service delivery and lobbying.
• Willingness to share your experience of food insecurity and/or financial hardship, whilst recognising that your experience cannot represent a whole community.

General responsibilities of all WCFB Trustees 

• Work alongside the Treasurer and the trustee board to ensure WCFB’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available as necessary.
• Ensure WCFB is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and charity law reporting requirements.
• Ensure that all charitable activities undertaken by WCFB are compliant with its charitable objectives as set out in its governing document.
• Ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects.
• Understand and commit to WCFB’s strategic direction and mission
• Contribute to the development and review of WCFB’s strategic plan, ensuring it aligns with the needs of people struggling to afford the essentials.
• Help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders, partners and people experiencing financial hardship and food insecurity.
• Ensure WCFB has appropriate procedures in place to comply with current legislation and good practice including: employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
• Act with reasonable care and skill, giving time, thought and energy to fulfil your role.
• To serve as an additional promoter of the food bank in the community.
• Attend trustee meetings and produce feedback and reports as necessary.
• Ensure decisions are informed by people experiencing financial hardship by working in a participatory and inclusive way at board level.
• Demonstrate empathy and a non-judgemental attitude.

• Has experience of using a foodbank or of financial hardship

• Has a knowledge of, and commitment to, the work of WCFB
• Is willing to actively participate in discussions concerning needs of the foodbank’s beneficiaries, staff, and the trustee board

We are looking to appoint a trustee with experience in Finance to oversee our finance functions, providing advice, scrutiny and support to the charity and to be the Chair of our Governance, Audit & Risk Committee (GAR)

• Qualified accountant with demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge and thorough understanding of the Charities SORP (statement of recommended practice)

The Governance, Audit & Risk Committee (GAR) Purpose & Duties:

The Governance, Audit and Risk Committee is a Sub-Committee of the Board of Trustees of the 1851 Marine Trust (the “Trust”). The Committee shall meet not less than 4 times a year and at such other times as it considers necessary.

The Committee shall provide support, assurance and recommendations to the Board on:

• Best practice in charity governance and as appropriate governance arrangements for the Trust
• The effectiveness of the Trust’s internal control and risk management framework, including key policies and procedures
• The conduct of the external independent examination or audit and the Trust’s annual report and accounts, including the performance of the independent examiners’
• The day-to-day financial operations and controls including monitoring income and expenditure against the annual budget

Trustee - Role and Responsibilities

As a Trustee your role will be to use your skills and your personal experience to contribute to the work of the Board. Trustee responsibilities will include the following:

Leadership:

Promote the vision, values and objectives of the 1851 Marine Trust and take an active role in supporting the Trust’s strategy. Assist fellow Trustees in agreeing strategic aims, ensuring that the necessary financial and human resources are in place to meet its objectives, and that performance is effectively monitored and reviewed. Engage positively and collaboratively in Board discussion of agenda items.

Management:

In accordance with agreed Board procedures, monitor the performance of the Trust, identify and manage risks posed by its activities and assist in the satisfaction of statutory duties around the preparation of annual reports and accounts, fundraising and safeguarding. Provide independent judgement and advice on issues of strategy, vision, performance, resources and standards of conduct and apply this to the benefit of the organisation, its stakeholders and wider community. Participate in committees as determined and delegated by the Board of Trustees.

Governance:

Commit to working to, and encouraging within the Trust, the highest standards of probity, integrity and governance and contribute to ensuring that the internal governance arrangements, including the management of conflicts of interest, conform with the Trust’s constitution, best practice and statutory requirements. Obtain assurance that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and risk management systems are robust and appropriate.

Requirements for new Trustees:

Able to attend 4-6 meetings a year with sufficient time to review meeting papers. The time commitment is estimated at a minimum 20 hours per year but could increase depending on the outcome of agenda items and related sub-committee work. Documents are sent to Trustees by email and meetings are held both electronically and in person.

Trustees/Board members are not paid, though reasonable expenses are claimable. Initial term of office is for three years.

We are looking for a Non-Executive Director to join our Trading Board at an exciting time of growth and ambition.

A fully owned, yet independent company of The Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, the trading company manages and oversees the development of commercial enterprises for the Trust. This currently includes a café at The Wolseley Centre, charity shops in Leek, Penkridge and Codsall and a retail shop in the Wolseley Centre.

About the opportunity

We are seeking committed vegetarians or vegans to join our volunteer board of trustees. Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegetarians and vegans. We believe that all older people should be able to maintain their chosen diet and lifestyle and enjoy good quality plant-based food wherever they live.

Our trustees work with the CEO to ensure strong governance and help realise the strategic aims of this unique and growing charity. Since its formation in 2007, VfL has earned widespread respect for its advocacy, training, and resources that support dignity and choice in later life.

In line with our new Vision for 2030, we are looking to strengthen our board with a new trustee who brings experience of business development, marketing and income generation gained (most likely) from the Private Sector. We are particularly interested in individuals with proven experience in:

• Growing a business in an ethical and sustainable way
• Generating income from new streams and commercial partnerships
• Developing and marketing new products and services

The Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) is one of the largest immigration and asylum advice charities in the UK, supporting refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to access justice. An OISC level 3 accredited organisation, we represent clients at all stages of the immigration and asylum process, up to and including the Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber.

We also actively campaign for a fairer and more humane immigration system. RAMFEL caseworkers therefore have the opportunity to work on systemic and strategic challenges and support broader advocacy work.

Purpose of the role:

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that RAMFEL has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the CEO and senior management to enable us to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Duties:

• Support and provide advice on RAMFEL’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
• Review and approve organisation strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their effective and efficient implementation.
• Oversee RAMFEL’s financial plans, budgets, and statements, and monitor and evaluate progress
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
• Provide support and challenge to RAMFEL’s management team in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
• Keep abreast of changes in RAMFEL’s operating environment.
• Contribute to regular reviews of RAMFEL’s own governance.
• Contribute to the broader promotion of RAMFEL’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings and sub-committees. This may involve providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, reviewing or advising on operational documents (e.g. operational and business plans, new team structures, outreach and engagement events) or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. We are furthermore particularly looking for those who can contribute one or more of the following:

• Migrants or refugees, who have lived experience of the impact of immigration policy and practice
• Expertise in RAMFEL’s core service delivery, especially regarding advice, immigration or legal services

Previous governance experience is desirable but not essential and we will provide a full induction to the organisation and the workings of the Board.

Our flagship initiative, The Unseen Mile, is a 4.5-year journey covering 25,000 miles across 37 countries.
