About Vocal Advocacy
Vocal is a small independent advocacy organisation operating in South and West Devon including Torbay, that helps adults with communication difficulties to understand and exercise their rights, make informed choices and speak up for themselves. Our main activity is one-to-one advocacy, however we also offer services including training, person centred planning and independent quality monitoring or care packages.
We have a reputation locally for the high quality of its services. We hold the national advocacy quality mark. We may be small, but we are effective, enthusiastic and innovative.
What will you be doing?
We are all dedicated to ensuring that the aims of the organisation are achieved and that people's rights are upheld. One of the trustees has been on the management committee, in various roles, since the organisation was founded 29 years ago. Their hard work was recognised when DeVA selected them for ‘trustee of the year winners’ at the Devon Community Foundation volunteer of the year awards ceremony. Our Board needs to encompass a wider range of skills, especially around strategic planning and marketing in order to drive the success of our development project. If you are interested in becoming a trustee of Vocal, we would love to hear from you!
What are we looking for?
We are looking for passionate people to join our Board. You don't need to have a background in health and social care or in supporting people who have a learning disability, but you must share our passion for ensuring people's rights!
We particularly wish to broaden our skill base of the Board to support our Chief Officer through the development of the organisation.
Key areas are skills in income generation, strategic and business planning, marketing and communications. We would welcome a Trustee with finance/ accountancy background to take on the Treasurer role in due course.
In terms of planning for the future, our Chair would like to have a succession plan in place, should she decide to step down in a few years time, and it would be good to recruit trustees who might be interested in and be suitable future leaders for the charity.

As part of our Board, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to ensure wide ranging and easily accessible advocacy is available to people with a learning disability in South Devon and Torbay. As a Trustee, you will have a real opportunity to offer your unique skill set to help the strategic progression of the charity.
You will become part of a warm friendly and inclusive organisation where staff trustees and our ‘experts by experience’ (people who’ve used our services) work supportively and enthusiastically together to a common end. Everyone contributes in their own way, and is valued for what they bring. Vocal is a great network to belong to, and our in person or virtual meetings involving all the different groups are stimulating but also fun!
Commitment:
Trustees meeting every six weeks, plus other organisation meetings every three months for two to three hours. Email and other communication between.

Who we are.
Age UK Kensington & Chelsea (£3.1 million) is a community-based charity working in the heart of Kensington and Chelsea to ensure that older people’s voices are heard, their needs are met, and their independence is supported.
We are a team of 95 staff who provide a wide range of services including advice and information, and a variety of activities which improves well-being and addresses the issues of loneliness and isolation among older people. Our services range from informal social and leisure activities through to more practical assistance, social prescribing and in light of the pandemic, delivering large-scale humanitarian response from the first day of lockdown in 2020. We are part of the fabric of Kensington and Chelsea – a diverse and vibrant borough with a need and demand for more services and innovation for older people.
Prior to the pandemic, we introduced in partnership with the NHS, My Care, My Way, which has continued to grow from strength to strength with over 40 health and social care prescribing coordinators working with over 7,000 patients to provide support to reduce hospital admissions and promote independence. Every NHS-registered GP practice in Kensington and Chelsea is now signed up to My Care, My Way.
More people are living longer lives and as an organisation, we need to be fit for the years to come and ready to deliver the services our older people tell us they need. We are developing innovative new offers such as our recent pilot to deliver an evidence-based long-term supportive intervention for people living with dementia and exploring how exciting developments in technology can best support people as they age. We are also concerned about the impact of the cost of living crisis on our older people and how we can support them.
About the role.
It is an exciting time to join our Board as we are executing our current strategy and next year will be creating our next strategic plan. We appointed a number of new Trustees to the Board over the last number of years and we are now looking to grow our Board in terms of skill sets. We are looking for a mix of people, people who have been Trustees before and those who are new to the role.
In particular, we are looking to appoint:
- A finance professional, we have appointed a new Finance Director, and we are looking for a new Trustee with finance expertise who can join our Treasurer on the Finance Committee. This person could come from a variety of sectors with experience in accountancy, financial strategy, audit and risk.
- A professional with experience of working with older people and/or health or social care. It could be someone who has delivered services in the NHS, private or charitable sectors. We would welcome anyone with experience of dementia.
- In addition to this, we are looking for a professional with expertise and/or an understanding of fundraising; this could be in philanthropy, development, major donors, and/or events.
We are open to other skill sets and experiences as we look to grow and develop our Board. In particular, we are keen to attract those with a background in HR/people management for our HR Committee.

Time commitment
The board meets 4 times a year in the evening for approximately three hours (twice online and twice in-person). We have 3 Board Sub-Committees, the Finance & Risk Committee, Quality, Performance & Development and HR, these meet 2 – 4 times each year for about 2 hours. Committee meetings are usually held online.
We hold an annual AGM and also meet annually for a board development/strategy review day and other ad hoc events throughout the year.
We expect the time commitment for our Trustees including reading board papers, attendance at events, ad hoc conversations with staff and Board Members to be up to a day a month on average.

About us:
The Olive Branch Counselling Service (reg charity 1140475) is based in central Winchester, serving the community of Hampshire over the last 27 years. We provide subsidised counselling services for adults (over 18) who are experiencing mental health issues, via weekly therapy sessions. Our beneficiaries have gone through a range of difficult lived experiences, including loss, abuse, poor health and the current cost of living crisis. We’re a small charity with 4 part-time staff and aim to help 300 people in 2024. We recently secured a multi-year grant from the National Lottery, putting us on a more secure financial footing for 3 years. We still need to raise a further £30,000 in 2024. We have 44 volunteer counsellors supporting our clients, who are committed to helping people in need, and in turn we support their continuous professional development by funding their counselling supervision.
Role overview:
The Olive Branch Counselling Service is welcoming Trustees to join our Board of Directors. Trustees play a vital role in making sure that The Olive Branch achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the service has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, the Trustees support and challenge the Clinical team to enable the charity to grow and thrive to achieve our mission.
Duties and responsibilities
• Support and guide our charity’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
• Approve operational strategies and policies, monitor and evaluate their implementation.
• Oversee charity’s financial plans and budgets, monitor and evaluate progress.
• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
• Review and approve charity’s financial statements.
• Provide direct support to one or more operational functions, for example; treasurer, fundraising, clinical governance, training, external comms and engagement.
• Keep abreast of changes in our charity’s operating environment.
• Contribute to regular reviews of charity’s own governance by attending regular Board meetings.
• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect charity’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.

What we are looking for
We are looking for people willing to bring their time, energy, enthusiasm and commitment to The Olive Branch Counselling Service. We particularly need help in accessing more funding opportunities through sponsorships, grants, community fundraising and local business links. If you have skills or expertise in areas such as communications and engagement, financial management, fundraising or governance, we would love to hear from you. Most important is having the time and being willing to be pro-active with directly supporting the work of the charity. You do not need previous charity governance experience - a full induction will be provided.

Girls Not Brides is the only global organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child, early and forced marriage and unions (CEFMU). This is a neglected global issue affecting over 12 million girls annually. - Senior-level experience in governance and / or in people management.
- Strong understanding of, and experience in, the field of the child marriage and / or intersecting areas such as human rights, gender equality, education, shifting social norms or reproductive health, preferably gained within the international context and / or in countries and regions where the global partnership is active.
- Experience of high-level advocacy and including around national, regional and international policies.
- High level experience of networking, philanthropy, and leveraging of resources.
- Successful track record of coalition/movement building.

We are looking for a dedicated and passionate Trustee - Finance Lead, with specific skills and expertise in small charity financial management, who can guide the Irise community through the next phase of our journey. As Finance Lead, alongside the Treasurer, you will maintain an overview of the Charity's financial position and of the conduct of its financial affairs such that they can and do give well grounded advice to the Board of Trustees and CEO.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively participate as a key member of the Board of Trustees.
- Support the development of the annual budget and future trajectories in line with the aspirations of the Irise’s strategic plan and fundraising strategy.
- Advise on all financial matters, including regulatory compliance.
- Oversee the development and observation of financial policies.
- Keep the Board of Trustees regularly informed of key financial events, trends, concerns and assessment of fiscal health in addition to completing financial reporting in a timely fashion, making these reports available to the Board within reason.
- Have oversight of all financial transactions including monitoring developed systems for keeping cash flow manageable and efficient.
- Advise fellow Trustees on a regular basis of the financial status of the charity and where necessary recommend action.
- Arrange the compilation and agreement of Irise’s annual report, including the annual review of accounts by the independent examiner.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have sound financial knowledge and the time needed to comprehensively fulfil the role:
- Competent and experienced in handling finances, ideally within small charities (formal accountancy qualification preferred).
- Good understanding of the charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP)
- An understanding of the voluntary sector and previous experience as a Trustee
In addition, all trustees are required to fulfill the following duties as outlined by the Charity Commission.
Before you apply, please consider:
Time Commitment: The Board meet at least every 3 months. All of our core Board meetings are held virtually on weekday evenings lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Board papers are circulated 1-week prior to each meeting to enable plenty of time to read through and ask questions prior to the meeting. In between Board meetings you may be invited to provide additional ad-hoc input such as providing insights via email or taking responsibility for researching and writing Board papers on particular issues. We also have 1-2 in-person meetings per year; where possible, we strive for hybrid access to enable inclusion of those people unable to attend in-person events. Trustees are also encouraged to participate in online and in-person events with our wider networks and supporters from the UK and East Africa, and to support our youth leadership initiatives, for example we ask one of our trustees to provide mentorship to our Empower Period Committee. In total, you can expect to spend an average of 1-2 hours per week on activities and meetings related to the role. The role is meant to be compatible with a full time job and caring responsibilities, and we always aim for trustee input to be as flexible and time efficient as possible. We are always open to new ideas to make our Board as accessible as possible.
Term: Trustees serve a mutually agreed term, usually of at least 3 years, as agreed by the trustee and the board depending on the needs and desires of the organisation and the individual trustee. As a Board we engage in a continuous cycle of reflection, and each year our Chair meets with each board member, one to one, to review and reflect.
Expenses: Trustees shall be reimbursed whenever possible for all reasonable traveling, subsistence and other expenses incurred in connection with their attendance at meetings or in carrying out any other duties or responsibilities of the role, but otherwise shall not be paid a remuneration.

Our partner protects in perpetuity a collection of ceramics, archives and manufacturing artefacts, covering nearly 250 years of world-renowned Spode pottery production and a global manufacturing site with world class assets.
They run a small visitor centre, shop and café on the former Spode Works site. Given its size, comprehensiveness and location on the original site, this collection is unique in the UK as the sole surviving enterprise in industrial ceramics and very likely in the world.
They are looking to bring on board someone, either as a Trustee or Advisor, with the experience and ability to inform business planning, strategic development and financial management.
The post holder will also oversee monthly cash flow and forecasts based on bank statements, sales and expenditure as well as supervising the preparation of annual charity commission return accounts and tax return.

Citizens Advice Exeter and Citizens Advice Torbay are separate and independent charities, with separate Boards of Trustees. For efficiency reasons we share senior staff and have many shared administration functions. We are both looking for new Trustees.

What is a Branch Chair?
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. Many are further divided into local areas called divisions. Each branch has a Chair to oversee all aspects of the branch. Ultimately accountable to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, through the National Chairman your role is to ensure that the branch is running in line with SSAFA’s Royal Charter Rules, Regulations, and policies. Also, to ensure that clients and volunteers are safe, all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the branch is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA in your branch area.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. More people than ever are contacting SSAFA for financial, practical and emotional support. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.
Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.
What would you be doing?
- Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
- Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
- Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
- Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
- Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
- Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
- Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
- Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
- Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office
- Overseeing a programme of meetings including an AGM, branch meetings, committee meetings, training etc.
- Supporting any salaried branch staff and ensuring that their line management arrangements are working appropriately.
- Resolve any complaints that are suitable for local resolution in accordance with SSAFA’s Complaints Policy and procedures, referring upwards any that are not suitable for local resolution.
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. Many are further divided into local areas called divisions. Each branch has a Chair to oversee all aspects of the branch. Ultimately accountable to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, through the National Chairman your role is to ensure that the branch is running in line with SSAFA’s Royal Charter Rules, Regulations, and policies. Also, to ensure that clients and volunteers are safe, all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the branch is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA in your branch area.

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. More people than ever are contacting SSAFA for financial, practical and emotional support. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.
Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.
What would you be doing?
- Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
- Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
- Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
- Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
- Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
- Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
- Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
- Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
- Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.
