BRANCH TRUSTEE - RETAIL MANAGEMENT (RSPCA OXFORDSHIRE)
We are looking for a volunteer who have expertise in retail management. You will gain new skills and experience as a Branch Trustee whilst enabling us to help more animals.
Overview of the Branch Trustee – Retail Management.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person, who could devote their time to oversee charity shop agreements with another branch and to begin the process of implementing charity shops in our area.
Alongside passing on your expertise, this opportunity will give you the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside fellow trustees, in the running of the Branch and setting out both the short and long term aims.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 1-2 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether the trustee takes on additional duties.

The RSPCA Oxfordshire Branch
The Oxfordshire Branch was founded in 1875, it is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which is run by our Operations Manager and a team of volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA.
The main activity of our branch is on rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals rescued by the Inspectors from cruelty and neglect, we also to help members of the public with financial assistance for their animals for neutering, microchipping and unexpected veterinary fees.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee – Retail and Income Generation
· Assist the Branch Manager in maximising the profitability of the Branch’s three charity shops.
· Work with the Branch Manager to explore any potential for expanding the retail operation by researching the potential for further charity shops.
· Support the Branch Manager in establishing the Branch’s e-commerce operation via online sales platforms such as eBay.
· Work with other trustees, the Branch health and safety provider and the Branch Manager to ensure the charity shops meet health and safety standards.
· Explore other ways to generate income for the Branch and work closely with the Branch Manager to put these ideas into action.
Core Branch Trustee responsibilities
· Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.
· Work in conjunction with fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA.
· Work with national RSPCA staff to ensure that the branch meets all minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS).
· In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Partnership Manager write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.
· Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.
· Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support regional initiatives.
· Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
· In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.

Time commitment
· Attend quarterly Board meetings: These meetings typically last around 3 hours, held between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Most meetings are conducted online, with one in-person meeting held annually in June at the charity's offices in central Birmingham.
· Participate in Finance Sub-Committee work: The Treasurer is expected to join the finance sub-committee which meets quarterly for approximately 2 hours.
· The overall time commitment varies depending on the charity's activities, with an average of 10 hours per month, including preparation and follow-up tasks.
Trustees are also expected to contribute ad hoc and occasional time outside of Board meetings, the majority of which is done remotely.

Who we are
ECA offers a Social Centre that serves as a place for people to reconnect with old friends and meet new people in a secure and inviting setting. While activities are primarily aimed at elderly and vulnerable adults in the local area, the centre is open to everyone.

How we operate
The Social Centre is managed by a Centre Manager, Administrator, Activity and Volunteer Coordinator, and a cook. They are supported by a team of approximately 40 volunteers who assist in the office, gardens, café, and facilitate daily activities. The organization operates as a Charitable Company regulated by the Charities Commission and has eight Trustees on the Board of Trustees. The Trustees meet six times a year, with additional meetings as needed.

Chair Role Description
- Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that ECA achieves its mission.
- Work in partnership with the Centre Manager and team to achieve ECA’s mission.
- Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.
- Optimise the relationship between the board and ECA’s staff and volunteers.
- Plan and chair the board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate.

- Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years.

- Periodic meetings with the Centre Manager and management team, with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad-hoc issues.

The Elleray Centre
The Centre will be fully accessible, featuring a lift to the first floor. It includes a large hall that can split into two rooms and two additional activity rooms upstairs. A café and lounge will also open onto a garden with outdoor seating.
The funding for the new centre comes from Richmond Council, acknowledging ECA's local contributions over three decades. The future centre is leased from the council.

Role Overview
Title: Treasurer (Voluntary) Reports to: Board of Trustees.

Role and Responsibilities Overall
- Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
- Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.
- Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.

Specifically
- Undertake bookkeeping duties and/or oversee the finance volunteer ensuring posting and bookkeeping is kept up-to-date.

- Regularly carry out reconciliations/ oversee regular reconciliations by the Centre Manager.
- Liaise with relevant staff, board members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.

- Regularly report the financial position at Board of Trustees meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc) with assistance from the Centre Manager.

InterVol is a student volunteering charity in the United Kingdom that connects students with volunteering opportunities locally and overseas. InterVol supports students to develop their skills with community projects in the UK and then use those skills to support the work of charitable partners overseas on health, education, refugee support, and conservation placements.
