The Spear Assistant Coach will work as part of the River Church staff team, alongside the Centre Manager to deliver the Spear Programme, equipping and empowering 16-24 year olds to overcome barriers to employment and turn their lives around by moving into sustainable work or further education.
The important stuff
Salary: up tp £25,000 pro-rata
Hours: Part-Time, 3 days; 9.30am – 5.30pm with occasional evening working required (for events such as termly Spear Celebration evenings)
Location: River Church Ipswich – we are an office-based organisation

Key Responsibilities
Spear Programme
- Lead group sessions of up to 10 young people, using coaching skills to transform their mindsets, and to maximise their potential in stepping into the world of work.
- Prepare and deliver coaching sessions on a weekly basis and find creative ways of developing ongoing relationships with Spear trainees. This includes running application workshops with past trainees as well as maintaining records and reporting on statistics.
Relationship Management
- Build and manage relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including referrers, local businesses, and other organisations.
- You will support with job fairs, mock interview days and welcoming external visitors to the centre.
Church Community
- The Assistant Coach is directly employed by River Church, though it is not a requirement of the role for the successful candidate to join River Church as their worshipping community if they are already part of another local church
- Help to raise the profile of the Spear programme within River Church and build a network of supporters and volunteers from the congregation.
This role will suit you if you are:
- An active Christian, able to personally represent the values and beliefs of Resurgo and River Church, Ipswich.
- Passion for social justice and for working as part of the church to transform communities, especially supporting young people in employment or education.
- Confident communication and interpersonal skills, both over telephone and face to face; particularly a confidence in group facilitation.
- A commitment to grow and learn as a Christian leader, and a desire to learn and understand coaching techniques.
- An ambitious and self-motivated individual with the ability to prioritise workload, exercise initiative and work well under pressure.
- High emotional intelligence, a sense of humour and fun!
A couple of things to note:
- This role requires occasional evening work, for our termly Spear Celebrations (where we celebrate our trainees as they complete the initial six weeks of the programme).

The Role
As Operations Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of our Abingdon site, ensuring that our Wood Shop, workshop, and facilities turn a profit and run smoothly, safely, and in line with our business plan. You will manage a multi-skilled team across customer service, warehousing, and woodworking, and play a key part in delivering on OWR’s strategic goals - from retail growth to workshop projects to community initiatives.
You’ll work closely with the CEO and play an integral role in leading OWR’s operational performance, culture, and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
· Ensure a positive customer experience for everyone accessing OWR services at our Wood Shop, online and over the phone.
· Lead and oversee our Wood Shop and workshop operations, managing retail activity and supporting staff with purchasing and merchandising.
· Develop and maintain business systems to ensure high standards of service, safety, and sustainability across the site.
· Take ownership of Health & Safety policies, procedures, and compliance across the Abingdon site and satellite facilities.
· Provide visible and motivational leadership to operational teams - including customer service, warehouse, and woodwork - promoting team development and high performance.
· Coordinate with the marketing function to grow profitable retail and commercial sales.
· Support and develop workshop-based manufacturing and bespoke wood projects, ensuring delivery, quality, and customer satisfaction.
· Manage facilities at Suffolk Way, and off-site strorage, including building maintenance, utilities, and supplier contracts (supported by the Business Administrator).
· Actively participate in senior team meetings and contribute to strategic planning.
· Work with the Wood to Work team to offer meaningful work experience for job seekers, apprentices, and school volunteers.
About You
We’re looking for a hands-on, confident, and people-focused leader who thrives in dynamic environments and believes in combining operational excellence with social impact. You’ll have strong commercial and systems-based thinking and be motivated by purpose as much as performance.
Essential skills and experience:
· Significant experience in retail, warehouse or production operations
· Proven team leadership and staff development skills to support a positive organisational culture
· Strong understanding of Health & Safety - NEBOSH or similar qualification preferred
· Confident with stock control, EPOS/till systems, and financial reporting
· Good IT, numeracy, and written communication skills
· Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to support and guide a diverse team
Desirable:
· A background or passion for timber, carpentry, or sustainable materials
· Experience in social enterprise, charity, or inclusive employment
· Line management experience including management of HR processes

About the role
Responsibilities
- To support the Head of Seafarer Learning and Welfare in the effective administration and development of Marine Society training and mentoring programmes.
- To act as first line contact for all internal and external enquiries and to respond to these in a timely manner.
- To receive and process seafarer bursary applications and forward to the Head of Seafarer Learning and Welfare for assessment and approval.
- To accurately track and monitor beneficiaries of the Coming Ashore programme and to provide administrative support to programme mentors.
- To take minutes for team meetings and maintain records and files
- To work with the Digital Marketing Coordinator in the administration and promotion of all Marine Society services through social media and press publications
- To maintain the use of Google Classroom as a communication hub for programme users and bursary recipients and to track their progress and outcomes.
- To input data that will support the production of reports by the Head of Seafarer Learning and Welfare to funders and stakeholders as required.
- To assist the Apprenticeship Delivery Manager in all aspects of administering the apprentice and adult skills programmes.
Requirements
- Good general level of formal education (including English and mathematics GCSE Grade 4/C or above)
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications and virtual meetings software
- Good standard of written and spoken English
