Job Title: Business Development Manager (Fundraising & Earned Income)
Responsible to: Chief Executive
Location: Hybrid (with some in-person work as required)
Fulltime Salary: £42k pro rata (£25,200 for 3 days a week), dependent on experience
Contract: Part-time (3 days a week), Permanent (subject to funding)
Role Purpose
The Business Development Manager will lead income generation for Sounddelivery Media, securing funding through grants, partnerships, and earned income from services offered to the SDM network and external clients. The role is critical to SDM’s sustainability and long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities

Develop and deliver SDM’s business development and income generation strategy.

Develop earned-income opportunities, including consultancy, training, production, and services for the SDM network and beyond.

Build and manage relationships with funders, commissioners, partners, and clients.

Lead on writing high-quality funding applications, proposals, and pitches.

Work with senior staff to develop budgets, pricing, and cost recovery models.

Track income pipelines and report on progress and performance.

Support organisational sustainability planning and strategic growth.

Develop and implement effective strategies to utilise digital platforms in income generation and stakeholder immersive experiences. Including the effective use of online shopping and social media platforms.

Work with the CEO to develop and deliver Sounddelivery Media’s ambitious income generation strategy, securing both our annual operating budget.

Accountable for all fundraising and voluntary income generation, expanding further into major Corporate Partnerships, Philanthropy, Trusts & Foundations, Statutory Bodies, Grant makers, Major Gifts, Government Contracts, Supporter Engagement etc

Prepare operational budgets for all income generation activities.

Set clear, ambitious, measurable targets for income generating activity, making effective use of benchmarking and industry standards.
Person Specification
Experience (Essential):
-
Proven experience in fundraising, business development, or income generation within the charity or social enterprise sector.

Strong track record of securing grant funding and/or earned income.
-
Excellent proposal and bid-writing skills.

Strong financial literacy and experience developing budgets.

Confident relationship builder with excellent communication skills.
Experience (Desirable):

Experience of developing services for networks or membership organisations.

Knowledge of the media, creative, or cultural sectors.

Experience working with Corporate Partnerships, Philanthropy, Trusts & Foundations, Statutory Bodies, Grant makers, Major Gifts, Government Contracts, Supporter Engagement etc
- Proven experience delivering significant growth and working to sustain the income of organisations turnover up to £1 million.

About the role
As our Business Development Manager, you’ll play a key role in sustaining and expanding the services that make a real difference to people severely affected by mental illness. You’ll bring teams together, write with clarity and purpose, and lead the end‑to‑end bid development process — ensuring we continue to deliver high‑quality, impactful support where it’s needed most.
You’ll champion collaboration, draw on the expertise of colleagues across the charity, and craft compelling, evidence‑based proposals that reflect who we are and what we stand for. From early development to final submission, you’ll help us win and retain contracts that directly improve lives.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading the end‑to‑end development of bids, retenders, and proposals in line with internal quality standards.
- Working collaboratively with teams across Rethink Mental Illness, building strong relationships and creating connected ways of working.
- Supporting and managing Bid Development Officers.
- Contributing to regional business development plans and helping shape sustainable, innovative service models.
- Writing high‑quality, insightful submissions that articulate our strengths, capabilities, and lived‑experience approach.
- Developing early-stage budget models and working with Finance and HR to finalise financials ahead of submission.
- Generating insight through data, evidence, and internal expertise to create winning proposals.
- Researching competitors and identifying what makes Rethink Mental Illness stand out.
- Supporting successful bids through structured handovers and mobilisation.
- Contributing to continuous improvement through feedback, learning, and maintaining our Bid Library.
What you’ll bring
Essential
- A strong track record of writing successful competitive bids or proposals.
- Excellent writing, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- The ability to interpret complex tender documents and understand commissioner expectations.
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to unite diverse teams.
- Knowledge of commissioning, current legislation, and best practice in mental health and social care.
- Experience constructing budgets and modelling service assumptions.
- Strong organisational and project‑management abilities, with flexibility to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and excellent general IT skills.
- A values‑driven approach consistent with Rethink Mental Illness’ ethos.
Desirable
- Experience working within mental health, health, or social care sectors.
- Lived or professional experience related to mental health and wellbeing.

We are seeking a driven and proactive Business Development Manager to help grow our partnerships, revenue streams, and membership community.
The Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious business development professional to take ownership of revenue generation and strategic relationships across BAAPS Charity and BAAPS Support. You’ll work closely with the internal team and senior leadership to deliver strong commercial results while supporting impactful work within the sector.
Key Responsibilities
Partnerships & Sponsorships
- Identify, develop and nurture revenue generating partnerships through meetings and proposal development
- Manage sponsorship packages, ensuring delivery of benefits and strong relationship management
- Maintain accurate lead tracking and report monthly performance against KPIs
- Generate and implement new commercial opportunities
Finance & Reporting
- Oversee financial elements of sponsorship and partnership agreements, including chasing payments
- Ensure accurate financial documentation via Xero/CRM
- Support responsible budget management and revenue forecasting
Membership Growth & Engagement
- Drive membership recruitment for BAAPS Support
- Work collaboratively to enhance membership benefits, communications and retention
- Ensure effective promotion of all member-related services and offers
Marketing & Communications
- Support the planning and execution of campaigns across multiple channels
- Promote events, partnerships, products and other business activities
- Assist in creating marketing assets including collateral and digital content
- Maintain strong links with relevant Associations for cross-promotion and collaboration
Administration & Operations
- Prepare and manage proposals, sponsorship agreements, invoicing and document handling
- Provide support with meeting coordination and general office administration
- Assist with stock and marketing material ordering and organisational upkeep
- Maintain compliance with data protection policies
Technology & Systems
- Support updates and maintenance across BAAPS websites and CRM
- Confidently handle remote meeting systems and internal software tools
Who We’re Looking For
You will:
- Be commercially minded with proven business development experience
- Have excellent relationship building, communication and negotiation skills
- Show creativity in identifying new revenue streams and engagement opportunities
- Be organised, proactive and capable of managing multiple priorities
- Bring strong IT literacy (CRM, MS Office; knowledge of Xero advantageous)
- Appreciate the professionalism and sensitivity required in a healthcare related organisation
