We are seeking an exceptional individual to fill the role of Director of Finance and Operations. As the Director of Finance and Operations, you will guide the development and implementation of our financial plans and operational initiatives. Job purpose:

As a key member of Saferworld's senior leadership team, the Director of Finance and Operations will be instrumental in helping to shape the organisation's strategic direction. The role will strive to ensure financial sustainability, and the embedding of a business partnering approach to achieve Saferworld’s mission. This post-holder will provide strategic guidance and hands-on oversight of all critical financial and contractual aspects of our operations, and lead other key organisational functions, such as security and IT systems, enhancing resource management efficiency and organisational effectiveness. The Director will assess and optimise business processes and controls ensuring they are rooted in our strategy, identify and mitigate risks, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and sustainability.

Key responsibilities:

· Provide strategic leadership on financial strategy and management.

· Advise and support the CEO and Board on all financial matters, including risk management

· Oversee the organisation’s finance systems (including SUN), policies, and processes.

· Oversee global operational activities, such as insurance, procurement, ICT systems and relevant policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and maintaining global impact.

· Oversee global security efforts, encompassing physical and cyber aspects, to safeguard organisational assets and data.

· Provide inspirational leadership to foster the development of high-performing teams guided by strategic objectives and a shared sense of purpose.

· Manage a team of approximately 7 staff, providing managerial support and guidance to the team.

· Contribute to the organisation's overall development and operational management as an integral member of the Senior Management Team.

Person specification

Knowledge, qualifications and experience

• Accountancy qualifications, preferably CIMA, ACA and ACCA, and a clear understanding of Charity Fund accounting (SORP 2008 and the Charities Act 2003)
• Extensive experience in financial management and interdepartmental budgeting in a senior leadership position in an international organisation (preferable and international charity/non-for-profit).
• In-depth understanding of the complexity of overseeing and managing finances in an international context, particularly in contexts of conflict and/or war, including complexities of banking, tax, cash-flow management, exchange rate fluctuations and impact on budgets and forecasts, financial reporting, legal compliance, and transferring of funds to civil society and community-based organisation within different contexts, including conflict-affected areas.
• Senior leadership experience within the charity/not-for-profit sector and an understanding of costing funding bids and ensuring financial reporting systems meet funder requirements
• Experience of engaging and working with diverse funding streams including institutional donors, commercial contracts and Trust and Foundations and multiple currencies and geographic jurisdictions,
• Experience of working with a business partnering approach to achieve with others joint goals.
• An understanding and experience of project management delivery across an organisation, including an ability and willingness to undertake 'hands-on' tasks, such as preparing budgets, cash flows and other financial planning, management and control processes if required
• Operational experience in overseeing and supporting IT systems, especially in financial systems development – experience with the SUN system is especially desirable
• Experience working with a Board of Trustees and other governance levels of an organisation
• A track record in proven line and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others to deliver shared results

Under the leadership of the Chief Operating Officer, the Finance, IT, Governance and Risk, Efficiency and Sustainability, Facilities and Legal teams provide professional business advice and central support to Dogs Trust. My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was set up by late rugby legend, Doddie Weir, who was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) in 2017. A devastating disease with no effective treatments and no cure, each of us have a lifetime risk of developing MND of 1:300. The condition takes the life of one third within a year of diagnosis and half within two years.

The Foundation has a single, clear vision: a world free of MND. Funding research lies at the heart of everything we do; it’s what allows world-leading experts to investigate potential drugs, expedite new treatments and, fundamentally, work towards finding a cure for this disease. In April 2023, we launched our ambitious new research strategy “Catalysing a Cure” which outlines our continued commitment to our vision and to all the people affected by MND.

The Director of Research is a key position in the organisation that leads our research activities, managing a small team as we invest in a prioritised and focused research portfolio. Working alongside the CEO and senior leadership team, you will be responsible for overseeing our research strategy, programmes and initiatives. Knowledge of the research grants system is essential; we’re looking for someone who can hit the ground running. Strong communication skills are also central to this role; influencing and relationship building will come naturally to you.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research strategy and vision

• Monitoring progress against the Foundation’s research strategy.
• Driving strategic excellence across our research portfolio.
• Drafting and implementing an annual research action plan in line with the research strategy, business requirements, opportunities and challenges.
• Evaluating the impact of the research we fund.
• Ensuring the Foundation has the expertise it needs to support its research programme.
• Ensuring the Foundation is at the forefront of new research approaches, methodologies and funding models.
• Exploiting the Foundation’s commercial opportunities, where appropriate to do so.

Overseeing our research investment portfolio, programmes and initiatives

• Oversight and implementation of our competitive funding schemes, networks and collaborations
• Oversight and accountability for legal, contracts, IP, commercial, processes, peer review, reporting, metrics and impact.
• Ensuring all funded projects continue to meet our goals and financial requirements.
• Developing an excellent understanding of the MND field and using scientific expertise and knowledge to guide decisions regarding research investments.

Research advocacy and policy

• Understanding policy and its impact on MND research and influencing the design, implementation and monitoring of relevant policy and related initiatives as appropriate.
• Providing thought leadership, insight, content for Foundation materials, etc. to demonstrate our expertise and position in the MND community and to increase awareness and understanding of MND.
• Reviewing relevant published research and outlining the impact for the Foundation and the MND community.

Research communications

• Overseeing a research communications strategy to ensure we engage our supporters with the research we fund as well as wider developments in the research landscape.
• Communicating research developments, insights, and critical milestones, both internally to the Foundation and external audiences.

Strategic partnerships and external relations

• Identifying and establishing strategic partnerships and relationships with organisations and critical decision-makers etc. implicated directly or indirectly in MND research and specifically our research plans.
• Representing the organisation at national and international research meetings as required. This will include the 35th International Symposium on ALS/MND in Vancouver from 6-9 December 2024.
• Participation in speaking engagements and steering groups and committees etc.
• Acting as spokesperson for the Foundation on all research matters.

Team management and cross-functional activities

• Ensuring an appropriate team structure with the skills and drive to deliver on our ambitions research plans, providing ongoing coaching, feedback and support to build their capacity to further the mission of the organisation.
• Serve as part of the organisation’s leadership team and contribute to the development and execution of strategic decisions.
• Providing clear direction and leadership to the team, acting as a coach and mentor, to ensure they are highly motivated, with performance and personal development plans in place.
• Developing team capacity and competency through training, on-the-job-development, effective performance management and external training where cost-effective.
• Work with the senior leadership team providing input on decision-making regarding operational activities that support the Foundation’s aims linked to the research strategy.

Following their sons’ diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Emily Reuben and Alex Johnson founded Duchenne UK in 2012. We are an ambitious, dynamic and impactful charity. 

DMD is a devastating progressive condition diagnosed in early childhood which causes all the muscles in the body to gradually weaken. There are currently only very limited treatment options for DMD, so Emily and Alex set up Duchenne UK to change this. 

Since 2012, we have raised more than £27 million to end the devastating impact of DMD.  We fund ground-breaking scientific research to find effective treatments. We’ve developed the infrastructure of DMD clinical trial delivery in the UK. We engage industry and regulators to accelerate access to treatments. And we’re here to support every family affected and ensure that they receive the best possible care. We aim not only to improve quality of live but stop the disease in its tracks. We’re doing it faster too, because this generation of patients can’t wait.

Alex and Emily were awarded OBEs in The King’s Birthday Honours List in 2023 in recognition of their services to charity and to people living with DMD. They, and the dedicated and effective team they have built at Duchenne UK, are now at the forefront of this work in the UK.

The successful candidate will be an experienced fundraiser with strong interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide variety of individuals. The Fundraising Manager will report to the Director of Fundraising and line manage the Fundraising Assistant. Job Description

This role plays a key part in advancing the fundraising of Duchenne UK to enable more investment into research, advancing treatments and supporting the DMD community.  A core part of this will be building relationships with key supporters, including our incredible Family and Friends Funds, corporate supporters and community of fundraisers.

You will be central to the development and delivery of key events and campaigns throughout the year to achieve ambitious fundraising targets. You will have budget management responsibilities and provide insight into activities to drive improvements and further success in future years.

The role will contribute to overall fundraising growth; ensuring the guiding engagement and fundraising principles are delivered, and that all fundraising delivers an exceptional and remarkable donor experience to which Duchenne UK prides itself.

Fundraising and business development

  • Key relationship manager for Duchenne UK Family and Friends Funds, engaging them through fundraising, supporting third party events and providing regular project and charity updates

  • Lead the identification and development of new income sources with the support of the Fundraising team to increase donations, improve the profile of Duchenne UK and enhance our reputation within the donor community; including corporate partnerships, fundraising campaigns, third party activity, challenge events, regular giving and legacy

As digital content officer, you’ll design, edit and optimise our web content to help our users feel empowered throughout their breast cancer experience.

From personal stories and blogs to landing pages and webforms, you’ll support teams across the charity and lead the content creation for some of our key projects and campaigns.

You’ll know content design, search engine optimisation (SEO), user experience (UX) and accessibility best practices like the back of your hand and be able to advise teams on the correct approach for their pages. And with support from our digital analytics manager, you’ll be able to advise teams on how to improve their content to drive conversions. 

Not only will you be able to take the lead, but you’ll also be a team player. You’ll be able to take direction from the digital content manager on bigger projects and collaborate with other members of your team. 

You’ll join the team at an exciting time as we’re amid our digital transformation project. You’ll play a key role in moving our content from the old to the new website. You’ll also help set the standard of content on the new website by training teams on new processes on the new CMS and coaching them on web best practices. 

This role is a 12 month fixed-term contract.
