Board member opportunities
CHS is governed by a Board of Management made up of paid members who meet regularly throughout the year to direct policy and make major decisions on housing matters. We have an active Board, currently made up of five members, bringing a variety of skills and backgrounds. Our Chair has been in the role since 2021 and we appointed a new Managing Director within the last year.
We are now looking to recruit two new board members. One who can bring strategic finance expertise and another with building asset management experience.
- Strategic finance: As a provider, we offer a unique set of services that have particular challenges. We are looking for an experienced senior finance professional to help us balance the risks and benefits involved in relation to our portfolio and scrutinise our finances strategically for the longer term.
- Building asset management: We are looking for expertise in property management. This will include repairs and maintenance, health and safety legislation and regulations, strategic asset management and decarbonisation.

The School Library Association is a charity dedicated to supporting all who work within school libraries – primary, secondary and sixth form.

Role Description

Role Overview
We are a small charity and handle a moderate number of transactions each month using an online accounts package (Xero). We have an online bookings system handled through our website and online payments system (STRIPE). Book-keeping is managed in house by the Business Manager. Monthly payments approval would be required, supporting the preparation of quarterly management accounts. More input in March and April for preparation of the year end accounts and additional support in January - February would be welcomed to develop budgets, templates and invoice codes for the coming year.
Routinely, we look to our Treasurer for:
Monthly - Approval of online payments, review of management accounts and reserves, monitoring cash flow
Quarterly - Preparation of board reports (quarterly management accounts), review of reserves, preparation of latest estimate
Annually - Preparation of annual budget and draft accounts for independent review

As a Fundraising Volunteer – Campaigns & Events at The Mulberry Centre, you will play a vital role in supporting our fundraising campaigns, events and initiatives aimed at providing essential services to individuals affected by cancer. About the role:
The role of the trustee board is to receive assets from donors, safeguard them and apply them to the charitable purposes of Salcare. The trustee board must always act in the best interests of Salcare, exercising the same standard of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility. The trustee board must act as a group not as individuals.
Duties of a trustee:
The duties of a trustee are to:
· Ensure that Salcare complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
· Ensure that Salcare pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
· Ensure Salcare applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable objects. The charity cannot spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be
· Ensure Salcare develops long-term strategy, defines its goals, and evaluates performance against targets.
· Ensuring the financial stability and sustainability of Salcare
· Safeguard the good name and values of Salcare.
· To ensure the effective and efficient administration of Salcare including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.

· To appoint the most senior staff member and appraise their performance
As well as the statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the trustee has particular expertise.
In addition trustees are expected to:
· Be committed to the vision and values of Salcare
· Abide by Salcare’s policies and procedures
· Meet the minimum time commitment including attending the majority of board meetings

Minimum time commitment:
On average the minimum time commitment is between six and ten days per year depending on level of involvement.
Board meetings:
Trustees are required to attend bi-monthly Board meetings for which they are expected to read papers and prepare. Board meetings usually take place at the Salcare main office, Heanor, for up to two hours during working hours: occasionally board meetings may be held remotely using Zoom or Microsoft Office. The timings of Board meetings is regularly reviewed in the light of the practical needs of the trustees.
Planning sessions and team building
Most years trustees will be expected to engage in two half day sessions; these will generally be during the day.
Committees/Working Groups
According to their individual skills and experience, most trustees will be invited to serve on a sub-committee. Some sub-committees are standing committees and meet quarterly, others are fixed term ‘task and finish’ groups.
Other Support
Generally trustees are expected to support in practical ways such as participating in interviewing for senior staff, representing Salcare at events, or engaging in fundraising activity; some of these activities take place during the day.
Term of service
Our practice is for Trustees to serve on the Board for a three-year period at the end of which they may be re-elected for up to two further terms.
Person specification:
Each trustee must have:
· A commitment to the vision, mission and values of Salcare.
· A willingness to meet the minimum time commitment including, on occasions, being available to staff for advice and support.
· Integrity including understanding of, and ability to maintain, confidentiality.
· An ability to analyse and evaluate information and think strategically.
· Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisational and external environments.
· Willingness to express opinion in a reasoned way, balancing tact and diplomacy with a willingness to challenge and constructively criticise.
· An understanding of the governance role and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
· An ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of Salcare.
· Capacity for self-reflection and active learning, and a willingness to undertake training when required.
· A willingness to complete induction activities and reading over their first six months of service.
The board of trustees collectively need a wide range of skills and experience including:

· Charity law and charity governance.
· Understanding of national and local policy environment.

· PR, Marketing, Communications and campaigning.

· Service user perspectives, involvement and consultation.
· Key policy areas including Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities/diversity etc.
· Lived experience of the disadvantages and challenges faced by users of Salcare’s services.
· Specific knowledge and experience relating to our work including:
· Domestic violence and abuse legislation
· Therapy and counselling
· Working with children and young people
· Mental health
· Food and fuel poverty
· Welfare Rights
At this time we are specifically looking for up to four individuals with experience of at least one of the following areas:
· Charity Finance including budgeting and year end accounts (Treasurer Role).
· Working with young people and children including experience of Ofsted.
· Corporate Social Responsibility and who have a network with businesses within the region.
· Income generation including the development of Social Enterprise.
· Developing communications strategy including social media.

About We Are Family
We Are Family is an extraordinary peer support community for adopters and prospective adopters. We’re there for parents throughout their adoption journey. Online and in person, our parents’ groups, events, resources, podcasts and talks offer mutual support, information and inspiration to adopters and those considering adoption. We currently operate across Greater London and the Home Counties, with ambitions to scale nationally over the coming years.
The Role
We Are Family is seeking to appoint a committed and motivated Treasurer who will work closely with the Board of Trustees and play an active part in the governance of the organisation’s finances.
This is a voluntary opportunity with associated Trustee expenses - such as travel / childcare - covered by We Are Family. The Company Secretary can be based anywhere in the UK.

We Are Family typically holds four Board meetings per year

In addition to being involved in Board meetings, the Treasurer should expect to spend 8-10 hours each month on work related to the finances of the charity.

The normal term of appointment for a Treasurer is three years, after which there is the opportunity to renew for a further three-year period.
Skills and Experience
In this role you will:

Advise on the financial implications of We Are Family’s strategic plan.

Be an active member of the We Are Family Finance, Fundraising & Resources Committee who meet once every quarter.

Oversee presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the board of trustees.

Lead on the board’s duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly controlled, invested and economically spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.

Lead the development and implementation of financial reserves, cost management and investment policies.
-
Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity.

Oversee the implementation of and monitoring specific financial controls and adherence to systems.

Oversee the charity’s financial risk management process.

Review and approve payments (including payroll).

Be the main point of contact for We Are Family’s bank.

Act as a counter signatory on important applications to funders.

Liaise with the appropriate member of staff responsible for the financial activities of the organisation.

Liaise with the external auditors or independent examiner on specific issues such as the auditor’s or examiner’s management letter and the related board representations.
This role would suit an individual with:

PIP works mainly in the Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster communities to support adults with learning disabilities and autism. Our focus is on teaching and learning life skills so those we work with self-identify as PiP students. Ranging in age from 18 to 92, our average student is around 34 years old.
PiP students have a range of learning disabilities including Down's Syndrome, Fragile X, Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), dual diagnosis with mental health problems and/or physical health conditions such as Diabetes and Epilepsy.

Role & Person Specification
As Chair your primary responsibilities will include:
- Chair meetings of the PIP Board of Trustees, providing leadership and support to the CEO including meeting regularly to discuss current issues
- Lead the board in the performance of their roles and scrutiny of PiP’s work
- Enable trustees to fully engage with their role, board sessions, and the organisation’s work
- Hold the CEO to account for the performance and financial sustainability of the charity and give appropriate support and challenge
- Oversee the strategic direction, financial management & performance of the organisation
- Provide leadership for the organisation
- Support in the income generation, communications, and community engagement of the organisation
- Lead on the appointment of trustees and CEO as required and ensure that posts receive appropriate induction, advice, training and information
- Ensure that PIP complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
PiP is looking for an individual with the following skills and experience:
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to think strategically and creatively
- Good communication skills with the ability to inform and engage a wide range of audiences
- An understanding of leadership, management and governance and the respective roles of the Chair, the Board and the Chief Executive
