We are the regulator for the optical professions in the UK. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting high standards of education, performance, and conduct.
About the Advisory Panel
The Advisory Panel is a meeting of the four Council’s committees (Companies, Education, Registration, and Standards) in plenary session. They are established by statute for the purpose of giving advice and assistance to Council (whether or not in response to a request from them) on:

matters relating to business registrants other than matters required by the Opticians Act to be referred to the Investigation Committee, the Registration Appeals, Committee or the Fitness to Practise Committee;
-
matters relating to optical training, education, and assessment;
-
matters relating to registration, other than matters required by the Opticians Act to be considered by the Registration Appeals Committee; and
-
matters relating to the standards of conduct and performance expected of registrants or those seeking admission to the register.
Time Commitment and Remuneration
This role is part time with a commitment of approximately 2-3 days per year, including time spent preparing for meetings. Meetings will usually take place via MS Teams but may on occasion be held at the GOC Offices in London or other suitable venues.
A daily fee of £319 will be paid. This is in line with our member fees policy and member fee schedule. This is taxable and subject to Class 1 National Insurance (NI) contributions. It is not pensionable.
Members can claim expenses for travel and subsistence costs incurred on Council business as set out in our expenses policy.

The Commonweal Trust is continuing to develop an exciting project to help activists discover and use the peace and nonviolence resources which make up the Commonweal Collection, an independent specialist library housed securely at the J.B. Priestley Library, University of Bradford..
We are recruiting for a Collection Development Worker to join our team who will work with the print Commonweal Collection and, through development of a digital strategy, increase the use and visibility of the Collection. This post also includes funding for a 60 hour discrete scoping project linking the resources on the Civil Resistance.info bibliography with the physical resources in the Collection. This role will work in collaboration with the Bradford Peace Museum at Saltaire and the J.B. Priestley Library, University of Bradford.
Collection Development Worker: Primary purpose of the role
To manage the Commonweal Collection, including responsibility for digital strategy, in order to provide access to resources for activist individuals and organisations, and increase nonviolent action within movements for positive social change.
Duties and responsibilitie:
The post-holder acts as the main point of contact for the Collection and is resonsible for ensuring it is is up-to-date and accessible. The intial focus of this fixed term contract is to build on work already undertaken with the print collection by scoping a digital strategy linking the Commonweal Collection to the CivilResistance.info website building on its role as a rich source of materials to inspire, support and informactivists seeking nonviolent transformative change.
- To liaise closely with the J.B Priestley Library, including with its Special Collections archive.
- To undertake a discrete scoping project (60 hours) on integrating the work of the CivilResistance.info website and Commonweal Collection ahead of future funding and development.
- To manage, maintain and develop the physical Commonweal Collection and updating the online library management system.
- To develop and implement a digital strategy for Commonweal to ensure Commonweal resources reach national and international audiences.
- To work with the Outreach Worker to develop emotionally engaging resources on nonviolence that speak to a diversity of traditions, so that people learn practical ways to puruse change and maintain hope.
- To update the Commonweal website and its social media/online presence, including responsibility for the Commonweal blog, in collaboration with the Outreach Worker.
- To support the Outreach Worker as needed, to include work with volunteers and maintaining Commonweal's visibility within the Peace Museum premises.
- To ensure that the Collection is engaging and accessible to activists and organisations from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on what nonviolence means to different communities and under-represented perspectives.

About the role:
EJF seeks a dynamic and highly organised individual to join our expanding Environmental Defenders (ED) programme. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as we scale up support for grassroots leaders who protect our planet and defend interlinked human rights.
Working closely with the Global Programme Coordinator, the ED Programme Officer will enable EJF to deliver tailored training on advocacy, investigation, and filmmaking to environmental defenders worldwide. This starts with supporting the coordination of our new Ocean Defenders project alongside EJF’s teams in Southeast Asia and West Africa.
As an effective multitasker and skilled coordinator, you will lead the operational and logistical elements of our capacity-strengthening programmes. You will build and maintain strong relationships with our partners, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, tailored support. The role requires excellent planning abilities, a strong attention to detail and a passion for helping others.
This position offers significant room for growth and learning. The successful candidate will be given opportunities for development such as participating in training projects overseas and growing project management responsibilities.
Key responsibilities:
Taking instruction and guidance from the Global Programme Coordinator (and in her absence, a named member of the Senior Management Team), the Environmental Defenders Programme Officer will:
● Plan and organise in-person (and remote) support for environmental defenders – leading on scheduling, budgeting, logistics and other administrative elements of the EJF support.
● Support the implementation of the capacity-strengthening programme, following up with colleagues and partners to ensure continuous progress towards deliverables.
● Coordinate with environmental defenders (grassroots NGOs and other civil society leaders) – maintaining relationships with focal points, collecting feedback, and monitoring support needs.
● Contribute to the implementation and improvement of the monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) processes, to measure the programme’s impact, the quality of the support provided and adapt to emerging needs and priorities.
● Support with creating new and streamlining internal processes – developing templates, centralising training materials, and facilitating the sharing of lessons learned across teams.
● Assist with production of reports to funders and in securing new and additional funding for the programme.
● Support communications efforts on the Environmental Defenders programme, drafting impactful content for the website, sharing successes with the EJF comms team and identifying other opportunities to improve the programme’s visibility.
● Ensure that digital images from the Programme and from partners are logged in the EJF image library and utilised effectively to drive engagement in the programme.
● Conduct research and participate in networking opportunities to identify potential organisations and individuals to join and benefit from the Environmental Defenders Programme.
● Liaise between partners and EJF’s finance function to ensure that activities are delivered within budget, delivering value for money.
Essential experience and skills:
● Experience coordinating logistics for international trips, events or complex projects.
● Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with partners (NGOs or others) from different cultures and across time zones.

Background information
The Director of Business Development is primarily focussed on growing commercial opportunities and engaging at a strategic partnership and corporate level. The Head of Fundraising and Communications will boost the capacity and leadership of the team to develop voluntary fundraising, lead on smaller corporate partnerships, develop grants and trusts income, create and deliver headline grabbing campaigns that appeal to the wider public thereby developing an individual giving function and lead on organisational communications, including fundraising comms. You will be supported by a Communications Assistant who has a good knowledge of the charity and Fundraising Assistant. The latter post is currently vacant and, it is hoped, the Head of Fundraising will be involved in the recruitment. There is a strong pipeline of innovative projects which will create compelling cases for support with which to fundraise. The assets are in place, it just takes an exceptional fundraiser to capitalise on opportunities.

Experience

Experience in both fundraising (multiple and sustainable income streams) and communications(fundraising and organisation-wide), with evidence of developing strategy and delivery as well as management and leadership of these areas.

The Role

About the role
You will undertake a range of administrative tasks in relation to the technical infrastructure and systems needed to support and deliver our training offer. You will support the administration of some broader relationship and partnership outcomes. This includes routine tasks in relation to the administration of our CRM (Salesforce) and other partnership tools and processes as necessary.
This role will also support our efforts to grow the training offer by assisting with elements of the sales process — such as responding to enquiries, following up leads, and maintaining accurate records of prospects and bookings. While no formal sales experience is required, a proactive and relationship-focused approach is key, alongside a willingness to support the promotion of SEA’s mission and training opportunities to new and existing audiences.

The Role
An experienced and highly organised Personal Assistant is sought to provide proactive support to three members of the senior Leadership Team. The post-holder will be confident working across multiple diaries and systems and able to build trust quickly with colleagues and stakeholders.
Responsibilities will include diary and inbox management, meeting coordination, document drafting, travel arrangements and general executive support. The role will also involve acting as the first point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, handling correspondence with discretion and professionalism. There will also be opportunities to support wider team operations and assist the Executive Assistant as needed.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will bring prior experience in a Personal Assistant role supporting multiple senior leaders. You will be highly organised, calm under pressure and adept at managing competing demands. Strong written and verbal communication skills, alongside excellent attention to detail and discretion in handling confidential matters, are essential.
You will be confident using Microsoft Office, diary and inbox management tools, and supporting hybrid meetings via platforms such as Zoom or Teams. There are three Community Teams - North, West and East. We work to the three equal parts of our Community Purpose:
- We challenge bad practice: In the face of Scotland’s housing emergency, we will hold local duty bearers to account and defend people’s rights.
- We build capacity: The supply issues at the heart of the Housing Emergency in Scotland create an unsustainable demand for housing services in Shelter Scotland, across the sector and in sectors traditionally beyond housing. We build capacity within affected organisations and groups to respond with and for the people they support.
- We strengthen our case for change: We work closely with our Comms and Advocacy colleagues by providing useful insights and context about what is happening locally. We create opportunities for people with lived experience of housing and homelessness to lend us stories which bring the real issues behind the statistics to life.
Our North Team covers regions from Fife northwards and operates out of our two regional offices in Dundee and Aberdeen with the team spread across these locations.

In our North Community Team, we are engaged in our local communities to understand the housing issues people are facing to gather insight and evidence around the broken system, and we apply our expertise to work toward solutions. About you
Already with some relevant experience, you’re used to working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, have great time management skills and enjoy collaborating with people from other teams and organisations. The ability to listen to, engage and empower individuals and communities will be key. So will your willingness to challenge practice and hold people to account – including influencing decision makers. Adept at presenting information and arguments in clear and compelling ways, you have a real enthusiasm for delivering workshops and presentations too.
