Role Description:

Quilombo UK is seeking to welcome a qualified and experienced professional to join us as a Legal Support Specialist to join our Directors' Support Team in a volunteer capacity. The Legal Support Specialist will play a crucial role in closely supporting the Quilombo UK Directorship by conducting legal research, reviewing documents, and effectively communicating findings to the directors. 

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of taking briefings, translating them into actionable outcomes, and contributing to the overall success of the organisation.

Main Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Directors’ Support Team to provide legal guidance on a wide range of issues related to Quilombo UK’s operation.

• Analyse legal documents, contracts, and agreements, ensuring accuracy and identifying potential risks or opportunities. Collaborate with the Directors to provide informed recommendations.

• Conduct thorough legal research on relevant topics, providing comprehensive and well-documented summaries to aid decision-making processes.

• Assist in managing and organising legal briefings, ensuring all relevant information is captured and disseminated appropriately to facilitate informed decision-making

• Effectively communicate legal findings, updates, and recommendations to the Quilombo UK Directors. Clearly articulate complex legal concepts in a manner accessible to non-legal stakeholders.

• Participate in meetings and discussions to provide timely legal insights.

• Work closely with other team members to ensure legal considerations are integrated into organisational initiatives.

• Work collaboratively with the Directors' Support Team to translate legal actions into tangible outcomes. Monitor progress and provide regular updates on legal initiatives.

• Provide written reports as and when required. To undertake additional duties as required for the role.

What Will You Be Doing?

• Help increase engagement, improve the number of followers/likes, create & execute a content calendar
• Produce fresh, branded and engaging content for our social media channels 
• Prepare graphics and text for sharing across channels 
• Engage with our followers and encourage interaction 
• Manage and maintain social media channels on a regular basis
• Support charity campaigns, marketing, events and fundraising activities by promoting them on our social media feeds

You will be working with the charity’s founder and Chair as well as with other trustees and volunteers who will provide an overview of our existing social media content, our brand and how we have approached our social media content to date. 

Experience
We are looking for a volunteer who has experience in:

• Different types of marketing and communications media, including electronic and social media
• Writing and editing marketing content for social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn
• Building strategies to increase social media following and /or build fundraising or awareness campaigns
• Developing a coherent brand voice for social media, from content creation to community interactions
• Using and setting up tools such as Buffer, Canva, Tweetdeck etc

The Quality of Life Foundation is looking for a new Trustee with financial expertise to join our existing board.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced professional to join the board of a growing and impactful organisation that is bridging the gap between health and wellbeing and the built environment.

The Quality of Life Foundation

The Quality of Life Foundation was established in 2019 by Prof. Sadie Morgan OBE. Its vision is for a housing system that improves people’s quality of life in their homes and neighbourhoods over the long term.

Our activities include research, thought leadership, training and strategy development, based on the organisation's Quality of Life Framework. Working with organisations in the public, private and third sectors, we are instigating practical projects to support more long-term thinking in industry and government. We are a small but influential organisation and have ambitious plans for growth over the coming years.

We were formally registered as a charity in 2022 and operate a wholly-owned commercial trading subsidiary.

The Role

The role of the Trustees is to set the organisation’s strategic direction, monitor the delivery of its objectives, and uphold its values and governance. The board will also guide, advise and support the Chair, who leads the delivery team towards achieving the Foundation’s vision and purpose.

For this role, we are specifically looking for someone with a finance background and existing or previous experience in charity finance and governance to work with existing trustees to oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice and the legal obligations of the Charities Act.

The appointed trustee will sit on the Finance, Governance and Risk sub-committee and work with the Foundation’s Director and other trustees to update the board at regular intervals about the financial position of the Quality of Life Foundation and its trading subsidiary, QOLF Trading Ltd. NB all trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the administration of the charity.

Key responsibilities of the trustee include:

General

• Overseeing the creation and implementation of the Quality of Life Foundation’s strategy and business plan.

• Ensuring that the Foundation complies with all legal, regulatory and charitable requirements.

• Ensuring that the Foundation’s governance and performance is of the highest possible standard.

• Representing the Foundation at external events and sharing its aims and achievements with a wide variety of stakeholders to further establish its profile.

• Working in partnership with other Trustees and the Chair.

Financial

• Supporting the Director and board to oversee the financial matters of the charity, and to ensure appropriate presentation of budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements.

• Ensuring that financial resources are spent in accordance with the Charity’s objectives, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.

Main duties:

In addition to the general duties of a trustee, your time will be spent:

• Liaising with the Director and/or Business Manager and supporting on financial matters.

• Supporting the board to monitor the financial viability of the Quality of Life Foundation and its trading subsidiary, QOLF Trading Ltd.

• Creating, in conjunction with relevant senior staff, a set of sound financial processes and procedures for the control of the charity’s assets.

• Advising on the financial implications of the Quality of Life Foundation’s Strategic Plan.

• Reviewing the annual accounts and, where applicable, liaising with the Foundation’s external accountants to ensure the accounts are compliant with the current Charities’ statement of recommended practice (SORP).

• Ensuring that sound financial management is maintained and ensuring expenditure is in line with the Foundation’s charitable objectives.

Commitment

Trustees report to the Chair of the board. The position is unpaid, but reasonable expenses will be covered.

For the past two years London Citizens Advice has worked as an immensely successful informal coalition. On 27 February 2024 the Boards of the 28 London Citizens Advice charities approved the decision to transfer to a legal entity including registration with regulatory bodies and the draft Articles of the new charity. We are excited about the future and are looking for an experienced and committed individual to join us as our first Chair of trustees.

The new charity will have up to twelve trustees. Five will be member trustees (one local citizens advice trustee for a London region), four independent trustees including the Chair and up to three co-opted trustees. We are currently recruiting the Chair of the Board.

What is London Citizens Advice

London Citizens Advice is a membership consortium of 28 Citizens Advice charities delivering advice services across London. Each of our members is a member of the national Citizens Advice network of around 250 charities. When we become legally constituted, we will be a consortium member of the Citizens Advice network. London Citizens Advice exists to support and develop the work of local Citizens Advice, through adopting the following aims:

• Share, promote and assure best practice to build consistency and quality of the Citizens Advice Service

Who we are.

STAMMA is a small, award-winning charity with big ambitions working with a brilliant community keen to create space and respect for people who stammer.

Many people who stammer face daily ignorance, discrimination and disrespect. This can affect job prospects and mental health and cause social isolation. It can make a GP appointment a nightmare, stop you from accessing a service altogether and leave you feeling disbelieved. STAMMA is here to change that.

We have embarked on a new three-year strategy – Space to Stammer, to achieve real and practical change for people who stammer and showcase the inadvertent barriers they face. We aim to create a culture where consideration for people who stammer is akin to checking for wheelchair access; it is something to be thought about when it comes to every day like oral exams, customer services, booking GP appointments, online banking, or even being a parliamentarian. Our campaigns are about changing perceptions and have been award-winning and life-changing, and include Make GP Bookings Accessible, It’s How We Talk, No Diversity without Disfluency and campaigning against the Apple suggestion of the Woozy face emoji when the word ‘stammering’ is typed.

We want to reach more people who stammer and grow our base but to do that, we need to expand our training and advocacy services and underpin our whole range of support services, hence, we need to build our income streams.

We believe we’re on the cusp of creating real and long-lasting change for people who stammer. With this, this is a great time to join and lead our board as Chair.

About the roles.

Our new Chair

As our previous Chair, Joanna Gaukroger, stepped down due to illness, we are looking for a new Chair to lead our Board. It is vital that our new Chair shares our passion for creating a world that makes space for stammering, where a stammer is embraced as just a difference, and no one judges a stammer or how someone deals with it. Our new Chair will bring governance experience, be commercial and drive our strategy with our Chief Executive to continue our organisation’s development, including ensuring sustainability. Our new Chair will be committed to making a meaningful impact, foster engagement and strategic thinking.

Our new Chair will work with our ambitious board and executive team to ensure our organisation continues to be innovative and sustainable and champions the rights of those we support. We envisage our Chair as an inclusive leader, ensuring all voices are heard. We must represent our diverse communities, and we support everyone; those who passionately believe there should be no need to hide or control their stammer as well as those who seek more fluent or smoother speech.

Our new Fundraising Trustee

In addition to our new Chair, we are looking for a new Trustee who will bring skills and experience in strategic fundraising. Our new Trustee will have senior leadership experience with fundraising experience, particularly around individual giving, corporate partnerships, and major donor fundraising. Our new Trustee will share our excitement and ambition for change. We are looking for someone who can support us build our fundraising strategies and provide sound advice and challenge.

Time Commitment

The Board meets 6 times a year including an annual general meeting and our national conference – STAMMAFest. Meetings are usually held on a Saturday for 2 – 3 hours online and 4 – 5 in person. 3 of these meetings typically take place online, and 3 can take place in person in different locations across England, including London and Manchester.

We also have several committees; Trustees usually join one sub-committee. Our committees include the Finance Committee, the Fundraising Committee, the Research Committee, and the Membership Committee. Our new Fundraising Trustee will join our Fundraising committee.

We expect the time commitment for the Chair to vary. On average, we would expect the equivalent of c.2 days a month, spread across various activities such as preparation for board meetings, reading board papers, regular conversation with the Chief Executive, ad hoc discussions with board members and the executive team, and attending events throughout the year. The time commitment of our Fundraising Trustee would be the equivalent of a day a month.

GSTTKPA is going through an exciting period of change. Therefore, we are seeking to recruit a new Company Secretary to support our ambitious and innovative change programme, so we can continue to achieve the aims and objectives of the charity.

The role of Company Secretary is a key and important Trustee position on the Board. The Company Secretary will support the Chair and Vice Chair by ensuring the board functions smoothly. The Company Secretary will also have the opportunity to assist with activities and initiatives that are funded by GSTTKPA.

Trustees play a vital role in making sure that GSTTKPA achieves its core purpose. They also ensure that the charity has a clear strategy andthat our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, all the Trustees have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always actas a group and not as individuals. 

As a Trustee, we also require the successful applicant to have a commitment to equality; celebrate diversity and be responsive to the needs of different groups and individuals within GSTTKPA and the wider community. In return, the successful applicant will join a warm and friendly team that works collaboratively to support each other as well as our kidney patients.

The Green House Bristol is looking for a new Trustee. As Trustee, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. 

Overview of the role 

3 in 20 girls and 1 in 20 boys will experience sexual violence before they turn 18. Yet, with access to the right help, children and their families can heal and recover. The Green House offers this lifeline, delivering the only specialist service to children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse living in Avon and Somerset. 

We are currently recruiting for a new Trustee to join our Trustee board. As a Trustee of The Green House, you will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to survivors of child sexual abuse, and their families.

Please note that you will also be appointed as a Director of The Green House, reflecting our registration as both a charity and a Private Limited Company.

Although The Green House delivers a local service, the work we do is increasingly leading the way in changing the national response to child sexual abuse – from delivering national training on pre-trial therapy to our involvement in the Upfront Survivors project.

It is an exciting time to join us as we embed our new service model, deliver a new strategy, and look to increase both our local and national visibility. You will be joining an ambitious team who work tirelessly to improve the lives of children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse.

About you 

You do not need to have previous experience of acting as a Trustee. We are looking for you to demonstrate: 

• Commitment: A deep passion and commitment to work alongside survivors of sexual abuse and their families. 

• Integrity: That you uphold the highest ethical standards. 

• Strategic Thinking: An ability to contribute to ‘big picture’ thinking. 

• Financial Acumen: The ability to understand financial statements and budgeting. 

• Collaboration: A recognition of the need for The Green House to act alongside partners and survivors, and for the Board to function as a collective. 

• Advocacy: A willingness to represent the charity and advocate on The Green House’s behalf. 

• Communication: The ability for you to communicate your area of specialism to other members of the board with different specialist knowledge. 

• Time Commitment: The ability to consistently devote time to the role. 

We value a wide range of experiences and specialisms, and our work is research-led and evidence-based. We welcome and encourage those with lived experience to apply. We know that there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’ and that many of The Green House’s team are themselves survivors of sexual abuse and/or have wider lived experiences that offer huge value to the work we deliver. 

We would particularly value applications from candidates with:  

• Sector-specific knowledge of sexual violence and abuse. 

• Knowledge of any of the groups currently underrepresented within The Green House’s services. This includes boys who have been sexually abused, LGBTQI+ communities and those from the global majority. 

• Knowledge of human resources and employment law. 

• Knowledge of accountancy and finance. 

Duties of all Trustees 

• Prepare for and attend Board meetings, using your skills, expertise, and knowledge to contribute to discussions. 

• Participate in setting the charity’s strategic direction. Contribute to decision-making on key matters, including long-term planning, financial sustainability, and program development. 

• Provide support, learning and challenge to The Green House’s CEO. 

• Ensure The Green House acts in line with its governing document and complies with all relevant laws and regulations. 

• Ensure the charity lives its values (hope, creativity, and connection), delivering accountability to children who have experienced sexual abuse and their families. 

• Monitor operational progress against The Green House’s new strategy. 

• Ensure the charities financial and wider resources are being used effectively and treated with care. 

• Ensure all relevant policies and procedures are in place and are being implemented. 

• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively. 

• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect The Green House’s interests, to the exclusion of your own personal and/or any third-party interests. 

• Proactively represent The Green House, building the charity’s visibility and reputation. 

Terms of appointment 

Terms of office 

• Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, with renewal for two further terms to a maximum of three years. 

• This is a voluntary position, but all reasonable expenses are covered. 

Time commitment (Approximately 2-4 days a month) 

• Attend monthly Board meetings. These are typically held on a Thursday evening at 6pm. Most meetings are virtual although we do meet in-person on a quarterly basis. 

• Additional time is needed to take ownership of actions that arise from meetings (from supporting with recruitment and exit interviews where appropriate, to attending events on The Green House’s behalf). You will also need to be flexible in responding to emergent time-urgent issues when they arise. 

• We also ask Trustees to attend an initial induction day at The Green House, The Green House’s annual Festival of Activism against Child Sexual Abuse (1 day in early February) and spend a strategy day with the staff team (typically 1 day September). From time to time, depending on the nature of the Fundraising activity it may be necessary for Trustee’s to attend fundraising events/meetings with the CEO.
