Challenge Event Volunteer Roles in Central London, Greater London

We are looking for dedicated Outreach Volunteers in the London Boroughs of Kingston, Richmond and Wandsworth. We would particularly like to hear from you if you live in or near the above boroughs.

The Outreach teams encounter people on their first steps from homelessness to independence – providing pathways and support to assist people off the streets.

We work with people who are rough sleeping and we do shifts late at night, and early in the morning, to find these individuals. SPEAR then works with people on a housing pathway and assists them to link into various support services, tailored to the challenges an individual might face.

SPEAR is looking for self-motivated, outgoing, and empathic people who could volunteer to provide support to vulnerably housed, rough sleepers, or anyone using homelessness services in the London boroughs of Richmond, Wandsworth and Kingston.

The volunteer will enjoy developing positive relationships with new people and will be willing to work outside of their own comfort zone providing support and assistance to the Outreach Teams clients. The volunteer must have an enhanced DBS background check (SPEAR will apply for this on your behalf.)
It would be desirable if you had a driving license.

We endeavour to bring about constructive change, leading to a society where survivors thrive, and where domestic abuse is not tolerated.

Our Trustees are volunteer board members who play a vital role in making sure that EIDA achieves its mission.  As a group, they:

• Oversee the overall management and administration of the charity.
• Ensure that EIDA has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.
• Provide support and challenge to the executive team, enabling EIDA to grow and thrive.

We are seeking up to four new Trustees to join the existing group of eight. 

EIDA has a UK-wide remit with a membership made up of employers, and we want to reflect that across our Trustees.

Trustee duties

Trustees are the people who lead our charity and decide how it is run.  We envisage the trustee duties broadly as:

• Support and provide advice on EIDA’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
• Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
• Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
• Oversee EIDA’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
• Review and approve EIDA’s financial statements.
• Provide support and challenge to EIDA’s CEO.
• Keep abreast of changes in EIDA’s operating environment.
• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect EIDA’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
• Participate in periodic appraisals of the performance of the Board of Trustees, collectively and individually.
• Represent EIDA at external functions, meetings and events.

Terms of appointment

Position: Trustee

Location: This is a hybrid role, with occasional travel required to Board and network meetings held in central London

Terms: A maximum fixed term appointment of one three-year term followed by a further three-year term

This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Time commitment: EIDA’s Board of Trustees meets 4-5 times a year within the working hours of 10-5pm.  Currently meetings are held in London and remotely (Zoom).

Co-op Homes (CHS) is a housing association which owns some 300 properties across London and the South East. We're also a managing agent for 30 other community housing organisations and housing co-ops, providing services to over 2,000 residents. Our unique proposition lies in our ability to provide expert housing management services to housing co-operatives and other small, resident-led housing organisations, enabling them to maintain their autonomy.

Board member opportunities

CHS is governed by a Board of Management made up of paid members who meet regularly throughout the year to direct policy and make major decisions on housing matters. The Board is also responsible for ensuring that we are managed efficiently, effectively and in line with the requirements of the law, regulatory bodies, best practice and value for money.

We have an active Board, currently made up of five members, bringing a variety of skills and backgrounds. Our Chair has been in the role since 2021 and we appointed a new Managing Director within the last year.

We are now looking to recruit two new board members. One who can bring strategic finance expertise and another with building asset management experience.

• Strategic finance: As a provider, we offer a unique set of services that have particular challenges. We are looking for an experienced senior finance professional to help us balance the risks and benefits involved in relation to our portfolio and scrutinise our finances strategically for the longer term. 
• Building asset management: We are looking for expertise in property management. This will include repairs and maintenance, health and safety legislation and regulations, strategic asset management and decarbonisation.

We would very much welcome applications from people who combine relevant expertise with lived experience of social housing or experience of living in a housing co-operative, as we know you would bring a unique insight to the role. Role Summary

We are looking for a new Chair of Trustees who will offer strategic and supportive leadership to our highly effective, collaborative and committed Board.  The Chair leads the board, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively, in service of the charity's vision and mission.  The Chair leads in an inclusive way, supporting the Board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the Chief Executive.  The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity.

Chair role & responsibilities 

Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that Glass Door achieves its mission with the interests of Glass Door's guests at its centre.

Work collaboratively with the CEO, staff and volunteers to achieve our mission and optimise the relationship between the Board and Glass Doors's staff and volunteers.

Provide leadership within the Board, ensuring that it fulfills its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation and promoting governance among fellow Trustees, providing clarity around boundaries between governance, management and operations.

Plan and chair the bi-monthly board meetings and the AGM, with colleagues as appropriate and liaise with the CEO, Company Secretary and Governance Trustee with regard to setting up meetings, agenda items and annual report content.

Facilitate meetings ensuring all have equal involvement in discussions, clarifying any uncertainties, confirming decisions made and actions to be taken and ensuring effective time management of meetings whilst providing appropriate periods of discussion and reflection.

Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for Glass Door when required.

Support Glass Door functions and events eg attendance at supporter events.

Support the Head of Fundraising & Major Donors with the cultivation of high-level donors, occassionally attending meetings where value can be added.

Represent the Board at staff Town Hall meetings.

Support the team liaising with partner churches and statutory authorities as required and be the public face of Glass Door in the local community.

Liaise with the CEO and he Board to keep an overview of the charity's affairs.

Provide supervision and support to the CEO as necessary in addition to planned monthly/bi-monthly 'catch up' meetings and, with the People Trustee, lead the CEO's annual performance review.

To act as final stage adjudicator for disciplinary and grievance procedures if required.

What we are looking for

Experience of being a Trustee, ideally in the third sector, and an understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a Trustee/Director.

Advocate and ambassador - possess gravitas to lead the organisation and be able and willing to champion Glass Door.

The opportunity

You will be joining Sustainability First at a critical time, when we are stepping up our ambition to drive change in the energy and water sectors in a way that benefits people and responds to the urgent need to transition to a more sustainable future. You will work collaboratively with our Executive Director in meeting our ambitions to scale our work, drive change across the sector and embed the representation of people into decision-making.

This will include six primary responsibilities:

1 Ensure that Sustainability First has a clear strategic direction aimed at fulfilling its charity objectives and that the Strategy is regularly reviewed.

2 Oversee the governance of the Charity with:

     a. an effective, diverse and relevant Board of Trustees.

     b. appropriate policies, processes & financial management such that the Charity operates within the law, in pursuit of its Strategy and demonstrating good practice.

     c. regular and effective liaison, reporting and oversight of the Executive Director, Company Secretary and, as necessary, staff and panel of experts in order to ensure effective and proportionate planning, use of resources, monitoring and reporting by the Board of Trustees.

3 Set the agenda for and chair Board meetings to ensure engagement of, and discussion amongst Trustees based on the best possible information, input from the Executive Director and team, leading to clear and accountable decision-making.

4 Appoint, support and manage the Executive Director on behalf of the Board.

5 Ensure that the charity has an income generation strategy which is monitored and actively supported by trustees and Chair, in order to achieve the Board’s stated objective to build resilience and capacity for Sustainability First to successfully fulfil its charitable objects.

6 Represent the charity externally as required.

Skills

After many years of service to our charity, our current Chair is retiring. At a time of opportunity and challenge for our organisation, we’re looking for someone with a proven track record of leadership at board level, ideally in the UK charity sector. Your experience of running and growing a small but impactful organisation in a professional or voluntary capacity will be crucial to the work of our Board, dedicated staff and expert associates.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, you will draw on your experience of collegiate collaboration, positive decision-making and effective problem-solving to help ensure funding, organisational excellence, and ultimately environmental and social change.

• Marine Conservation - you might have environmental knowledge, ideally on the marine environment, with policy and/or practical experience of conservation. A network of contacts across the marine sector, particularly with business or government, would be an advantage.

What you can bring to our Board can be just as interesting as where you’ve been working. You do not need to have previous charity trustee experience, but you will need to be comfortable participating at a senior level with complex discussions and the need to be comfortable making pragmatic but key decisions.

PIP works mainly in the Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster communities to support adults with learning disabilities and autism. Our focus is on teaching and learning life skills so those we work with self-identify as PiP students. Ranging in age from 18 to 92, our average student is around 34 years old.

PiP students have a range of learning disabilities including Down's Syndrome, Fragile X, Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), dual diagnosis with mental health problems and/or physical health conditions such as Diabetes and Epilepsy.

The successful candidate will be asked to attend the Board meeting on 8 July at 5.00 pm – 7:00 pm to meet the trustees.

The Board of Trustees has ultimate responsibility for the sound governance of the organisation.

Specifically its role is:
● To agree overall direction and strategic plans, and to monitor, at a summary level, progress
against these
● To oversee the finances - to ensure they are being well managed and we are in sound financial
health
● Specifically to take particular interest in our fundraising strategy and performance
● To oversee our compliance with all legislation, e.g. on Child Safeguarding or Health and Safety as
well as with Charity Commission regulations
● To monitor strategic risks and ensure we have suitable mitigations in place

The trustees meet formally for a Trustee meeting about once a quarter, usually for 2.5 hours after the
normal working day. Each trustee is expected to play their part as a member of the Board, providing
challenge and support to the executive team as required.

Specific responsibilities include:
● Preparing for and attending trustee meetings
● From time to time and as appropriate, attending other Grounded Sounds events (e.g. end of
project showcase events, House Band performances, advisory board meetings) in order to gain a
greater understanding of the workings of the charity
● Communication with the Exec or other trustees in between meetings, as needed, in relation to
music industry connections, fundraising or other issues requiring input.

events and actively supporting the Grounded Sounds team in activities where they would benefit
from insight, guidance and contacts
● Strong network of contacts within the music industry and willingness to connect contacts to the
team in order to further support the work.

Hatch is seeking to recruit up to three new Trustees to its governing Board. This is a significant opportunity to work with a dynamic and inspiring organisation to make a real difference to social and environmental challenges by supporting social entrepreneurs and those from diverse backgrounds.

Hatch is proactively looking to recruit individuals from diverse backgrounds, and/or individuals with personal understanding and experience of the challenges that many of our entrepreneurs face who are from underrepresented backgrounds. Hatch specifically supports founders from ethnically diverse backgrounds, women, people with disabilities and we also focus on social entrepreneurs. 

Responsibilities

Trustees are responsible for governance, strategic oversight and ambassadorship on behalf of Hatch, a charitable organisation. Trustees take overall stewardship and responsibility for the well-being of Hatch, providing strategic direction and ensuring that Hatch operates effectively to deliver its vision and mission. 

Trustees act to uphold the core ethos and values of the organisation, fulfilling a duty of care in accordance with its governing documents, charity law and regulatory requirements.

Key Trustee Duties

• Contributing actively in providing strategic direction to Hatch; agreeing overall policy, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets and in line with Hatch mission and values

• Ensuring that Hatch complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations

• Ensuring Hatch applies its resources responsibly and exclusively in pursuance of its mission and its objects as defined in its Articles of Association

• Safeguarding the assets, staff and beneficiaries of the charity by ensuring risks are managed and mitigated, as appropriate

• Ensuring the financial stability of Hatch including ensuring appropriate controls and procedures are implemented and followed

• Ensuring that Hatch is accountable to its founders, funders and other stakeholders and that the Hatch team and volunteers are responsible to the Board

• Safeguarding and promoting the reputation and values of Hatch, including acting as an Ambassador for Hatch

• Acting in the best interest of the charity, its beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times, in accordance with its public benefit, 

• Applying skills and experience to question and challenge in good faith, contribute to Board discussions and to taking balanced and informed Board decisions

• Appointing and monitoring the performance of the CEO 

• Conduct an annual appraisal and remuneration review for the Chief Executive in consultation with other Trustees

• Being collectively responsible for the actions of the organisation and other trustees

• Maintaining confidentiality about sensitive or confidential information received in the course of fulfilling your role as Trustee

• Declaring any conflict between personal or professional interests and those of the charity

In addition you may be asked to

• Participate in activities with the Hatch team and Trustees to help you get to know the organisation. 

• Expand the network, resources, and funds available to Hatch by making introductions and connecting the charity to relevant contacts in your network

• Meet with Hatch’s prospective and current donors/ funders, where appropriate, as part of our donor experience and stewardship strategy

• Act as a signatory to Hatch documentation, fundraising proposals and/or the regulatory statements for the Charity Commission and Companies House

• Keep informed about Hatch’s activities and wider issues that affect our work

• Participate in other tasks as arise from time to time, such as recruiting Hatch team members and representing Hatch at functions and meetings as appropriate

• Participate in or lead on a particular project, if relevant to their interests, experience and professional network.

Time Commitment

• Four formal Board meetings per year held in Central/South, London (or online) (2 hours per meeting), plus time to review the Board pack sent one week in advance of each Board meeting 

• Up to four additional meetings per year of trustees and staff members to develop strategy, ideas etc

• Additional Training and Development sessions are offered to all trustees around effective trusteeship, impact measurement, finance management and more (via external providers)

• Ad hoc engagement and support to the CEO, other staff and board members 

• Engagement with Hatch staff, programmes and founders as relevant

• Attendance at Hatch’s fundraising events and ad hoc fundraising meetings as relevant

• Hatch Trustees are appointed to serve for a term of 3 years and are be able to stand for re-election for a further 2 terms (maximum service 9 years)

• Prospective trustees start as Board Observers with Hatch, enabling you and the team to assess if we’re a good fit. Being a Board Observer comes with most of the same responsibilities and commitments as a full trusteeship does. We would expect prospective trustees to be Board Observers with Hatch for 3 - 6 months (1 - 2 board meetings and engagement opportunities) before being asked to become a full trustee where this is mutually desirable

• Digital Learning Expert: Hatch needs to think about its online offering to founders in new formats and in ways that will continue to deliver value to founders and partners. Online Learning, Virtual Reality, AI & Data, Connected Communities are areas where we would like to strengthen the board with someone who has skills/ expertise and a network we can tap into to assess and continue to develop Hatch’s online offer and to assess platform opportunities bringing together specific stakeholder groups (e.g. founders/ mentors).

• Digital PR, Marketing, Comms: Hatch has made great strides on developing its Marketing & Comms team. As Hatch grows we want to continue to build our brand and ensure opportunities to share our work, mission and impact with the world are delivered to the best of our abilities. We are looking for someone with specific skills, experience and network to support Hatch’s brand building and influencing, particularly with Public Relations background.

• Fundraising: Hatch is actively looking to diversify its income , which currently mainly comes from corporate partners (around 70-80%). We believe there is a big opportunity to work with more trusts & foundations and individual philanthropists on a strategic level as well as work with local or central government. We’d welcome people who have an understanding of the world of Philanthropy, Trusts & Foundations and might even be involved in running one or working in one.
