Would you like to work at the frontline of suicide prevention?
At our sanctuary (Finsbury Park, North London) for those in suicidal crisis, we offer a potentially transformative experience with a once-only 4-night stay at our non-medical, family-style house. Through respite, time and space for reflection and compassionate and nurturing care, our Volunteer Befrienders and Lead Befrienders support an opportunity for the revival of hope and resilience.
Volunteer Befrienders are key to Maytree and work alongside Lead Befrieders to provide an open and containing space for people who are feeling suicidal. Through active listening and human warmth our volunteers enable our guests to explore their feelings and their options in their own way and in their own time. This face-to-face support is not therapy; it is about being calm and committed and not afraid of difficult subjects, including suicide.

Shape the Future for York Students: Become a Trustee!
Could you make a real difference at a top UK university? Bring your skills and passion to the University of York Students' Union Trustee Board. We are looking for both external (lay) and student trustees and need individuals who can bring fresh perspectives, challenge our thinking, and inspire growth as we adapt to the ever-evolving needs of a diverse student community.
No prior trustee experience? Don't let that stop you – your experience and unique insights are what we value!

Whether you studied at York, somewhere else in the country, somewhere else in the world or took a different route entirely, we want to hear from you. You don't need Students' Union experience; we have a talented staff team. Bring your whole self, and contribute to a richer, more diverse Board. We are particularly keen to hear from those with expertise in: Finance and accounting, Commercial development, Sustainability and ESG, Charity, Media or Company Law.

If you are successful, you will be asked to verify your identity (guidance available here) and will also be required to complete a declaration that you are not disqualified from holding a trustee position (guidance available here). Please ensure that you are comfortable with completing these steps before you apply. The Charity Commission provides more information about the role of a Trustee.
These are unpaid volunteer opportunities; however, reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid. The broad time commitment is for attendance (virtually or in person) at approximately 8 meetings/events per year.

All applications will be considered, and a shortlist of candidates will be invited for interview and to meet current Trustees. We recognise the potential time pressures involved in attending an interview and we aim to be as flexible as possible. It is envisaged that interviews (available either online or in person) will take place on 23 or 24 June 2025.
Should the above dates not fit with your current commitments, please don’t let that put you off applying. Let us know and we will do our best to provide an alternative.

About the Leicester Gazette
The Leicester Gazette is a local, independent newspaper, free to access for all online and soon in print.
We are a member-funded, community-owned news outlet about Leicestershire. We're building on a movement of co-operative media pioneered by West Highlands Free Press, the Bristol Cable, Norwich Radical, Manchester Meteor, the Ferret, and Exeter Observer.
Our mission is to hold those in power accountable, push for change, and amplify the voices of marginalised communities while finding real solutions to the challenges we face.
We publish investigations, news features and human interest stories that go beyond the headlines. Our journalism is fact-based and rigorous, and we prize good writing over clickbait and sensationalism.
Local journalism has been devastated in recent years, with thousands of reporters laid off and newsrooms being stripped of their worth, leaving communities plagued by a jungle of ads and stories that have nothing to do with local issues. The Leicester Gazette is our revolution against a broken industry.
Anti-oppression and liberation
We are committed to creating a progressive, supportive workplace and community. We’d like the way we work to actively challenge the power structures that reproduce inequality and injustice, and consciously choose to work in ways that are liberatory, or anti-oppressive.
We embrace and value the lived experiences of women, people of colour, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and people from working-class backgrounds.

Volunteer Positions Available
We're recruiting for the following voluntary positions:
- Relevant Persons' Representative (RPR) Support Volunteer
- Hospital Visitor Volunteer
Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteers
People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them. This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve. Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care.
As an RPR Support Volunteer you might:
- Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support
- Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes
- Raise concerns
- Keep detailed notes and records
- Make a real difference to someone’s life
Hospital Visitor Volunteer
Hospital Visitor volunteers visit hospital settings to ensure that people detained under the Mental Health Act are aware that they have a legal right to an IMHA qualified advocate. The volunteers are instrumental in ensuring that clients get access to an advocate and can also support the work that advocates undertake.
As a hospital volunteer, you might:
- hold drop-in sessions
- attend events and ward meetings at local facilities
- share information
- assist people to request advocacy support by completing a form online or calling our contact centre
Volunteering opportunities are available Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00. You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK.

About Kith & Kids
We provide activities, opportunities, information, and support for people with a learning disability or autism, their parents, and siblings.
For all our projects and activities we are dependent on volunteers.
Our Employability Project
10am to 3pm, Monday and/or Friday during term-time
Our Employment & Life Skills Project (ELSP) helps adults with learning disabilities or autism to access further education, work experience and visits to mainstream community opportunities.
What you’ll do
You’ll act as a mentor to the members of the group. You’ll be helping the group(s) develop a range of life skills, things that many of us take for granted. These include Maths and English skills, independent living, the use of public transport, social skills and even the sourcing of employment.
For the people in these groups, these things can be very difficult to develop and achieve without regular support. Through regular support and meetings, members and volunteers develop greater trust, skills, and confidence together.
Come along and get involved!
Requirements
What you need
You do not need experience. Full disability awareness training will be provided before you begin volunteering with us.
The only requirements we ask of you are enthusiasm, energy and to be open-minded.
Minimum age for volunteers is 20.
How much time?
The project runs from 10am to 3pm, Mondays and/or Fridays during term-time.
Everyone gets the most out of the project if you come every week for at least a term as you'll build a close relationship with the members you'll have been supporting and will create the most impact.
What we can offer you
ELSP represents a fantastic opportunity for you to share your knowledge and experience built up through a lifetime to a group that is continuing to develop and achieve their targets.
We’ll reimburse your travel expenses and will provide excellent training and lots of helpful support.
By volunteering on our project you'll also:
- Use and develop your skills: time-management, working within a team, problem-solving and adaptability.
- Learn something new, get involved in fun activities with others.
- Increase your confidence.
- Meet like-minded people and make friends.
- Gain experience for (other) work
- Give something back to the community.
- Do something fun and satisfying in your spare time
- Challenge yourself.
What about training?
Volunteers must attend training and complete a free DBS check before you begin volunteering.
This is a great opportunity to get to know everyone at Kith & Kids: your fellow volunteers, some of our members you will be working with, and also gives the opportunity to develop some new skills and expand your knowledge in our workshops.
Topics we cover include:
- Autism
- Safeguarding
- Creativity & Participation
- Negotiation & Boundaries
When do I need to come?
Volunteers must attend training and complete a DBS check before taking part.
We'll be running face-to-face training in north London starting on the 24th May with lots of other dates to choose from.
In the meantime, we'll be meeting volunteers online from mid-April.
Training will take place in North London – once we have met you online for a chat, we will send you confirmation of our training venue details.
