1.Duties and key responsibilities

Donor Stewardship and Reporting 

•Research, manage and develop relationships with a portfolio of donors informing, educating, and inspiring them about MAP’s work, and asking them for donations either directly in application or facilitating asks by peers. 

•Create a personal plan for each ‘qualified’ donor, taking into account the individual donor’s interest, motivations, giving patterns, any information they need to support our work. Execute that plan on a timely basis plan so that individuals are retained and upgraded. 

•Work with colleagues to secure appropriate project information, including budgets, to create effective offers, proposals and cases for support.

•Create reports that accurately reflect activity and performance for donors who have supported specific projects, to show the impact of their gift

•Ensure that all major givers in your portfolio are provided with the highest level of stewardship and take overall responsibility for your own contacts and annual workplan.

•Ensure the upkeep of a database and filing system on all existing and prospective donors.

•Provide regular reports to the Philanthropy Manager and Head of Philanthropy. 

•Develop relationships with Trustees, Patrons and other ambassadors/high net worth volunteer fundraisers of MAP, where appropriate. 

Events

•Ensure that appropriate donors/prospects/influencers are invited to cultivation and fundraising events and to attend these events in the UK.

•Support in the development of Philanthropy team events, including dinners, receptions, and donor field visits, as part of a project team

General

•Work closely with colleagues in the Philanthropy team and other colleagues, maximising all opportunities and supporting a dynamic, successful, and professional team

•Ensure that data security is maintained and that legal and regulatory requirements are fully complied with (such as Data Protection, ICO, Fundraising Regulator and, Institute of Fundraising Regulations), keeping informed of trends and developments in the UK fundraising marketplace.

As Chief Executive, you will lead the staff team, be responsible for providing overall strategic direction, coordination and management of all CAP programmes. Partnership building is a key role to maximise our impact.

Church Action on Poverty is a medium sized social justice charity, with a vision for the UK to become a country where everyone can flourish free from poverty. We are an ecumenical organisation with a Christian ethos and roots in the churches who remain key partners for us. We support programmes across the UK improving the lives of people in poverty and create opportunities for those with lived experience to voice their concerns with the aim of educating the public to raise awareness and understanding in line with our charitable objectives.

Currently, our programmes are structured on the principles of dignity, agency and power. They comprise: supporting a network of 130 food pantries with a membership of over 50,000; enabling people with lived experience of poverty to speak truth to power and supporting churches to explore what it means to be a ‘church on the margins’ as well as playing a leading role in high profile national campaigns.

It is anticipated that the role will be varied and flexible, but will include:

• Assisting the CAP Council of Management in the development and implementation of the organisation's programmes, campaigns, partnership building and public affairs work. 

• Managing CAP's staff and resources in line with the organisation's agreed policies and priorities, and core values of collaboration, participation and empowerment. 

• Fundraising and organisational strategy to achieve our aims.

• Ensuring that people with lived experience of poverty are actively involved in all aspects of CAP's work. 

• Leading and line managing the Senior Leadership and Management Team.

• Working with the whole staff team to develop and implement strategies that build dignity, agency and power to end poverty.

Key responsibilities 

1. Supporting CAP's Council of Management in its governance function

• Maintaining regular contact with the CAP Chairperson and Officer Group. 

• Providing regular written reports to CAP's Council of Management and attending all meetings of the CAP Council of Management and Officers Group. 

• Agreeing and implementing an annual planning cycle with the Council of Management, in line with CAP’s strategic values and vision.

• Working with the chair and officers to ensure good governance of the organisation. 

2. Ensuring the effective management of CAP's staff team by: 

• Providing day-to-day management and support for the Senior Management and Leadership Team. 

• Holding oversight of the policies and procedures of the organisation and ensuring that they are up to date and fit for purpose 

• Setting the culture of the organisation, with a focus on promoting collaborative working, learning and staff wellbeing. 

3. Finance and fundraising

• Setting a clear, viable organisational and financial strategy and implement through

• Fundraising and relationship building to secure the resources needed for the programme work and campaigning.

• Formulating appropriate applications for programme funding.

• Providing resources for donors and churches to organise fundraising.

4. Programme Development

Leading the process of programme development within CAP in order to: 

• Promote new approaches to combating poverty, which build the dignity, agency and power of people and communities struggling against poverty. 

• Ensure that programmes have clearly identified aims, objectives and methods and that projects are monitored and evaluated. 

5. Partnership Building
Building partnerships and contribute to the shared leadership and development of a movement based on dignity, agency and power with people and struggling communities against poverty, by

• Working with a wide range of partners and people with lived experience, to connect and build networks of people and groups who are committed to challenging poverty.

• Ensuring that CAP works collaboratively, leading CAP's involvement in strategic coalitions, alliances and other movement building opportunities.

• Ensuring CAP’s work is informed by the insights of people with lived experience of poverty, as well as wider public policy, debate and research. 

• Ensuring that CAP’s views are shared with government, politicians, churches and others, where possible, led by people with lived experience of poverty.

6. Membership and supporters
Working with CAP’s Communications and Supporter Relations manager to ensure the recruitment and retention of members, donors and supporters by ensuring that: 

• CAP members are provided with regular mailings and appropriate support for local/national activity. 

• Ensuring that requests from CAP members and others for information and support are dealt with appropriately. 

• Overseeing resources for Challenge Poverty Week and Poverty Sunday

7. Public Profile
In collaboration with CAP's Council of Management and staff, ensuring that CAP maintains a high profile within both the church and secular media, including: 

• Ensuring CAP contributes effectively to public and media debate, including mainstream secular and church media, TV, radio and new/social media etc.

• Prioritising opportunities for people with lived experience to act as spokespeople and the public face for CAP.

• Attending and speaking at appropriate conferences and events making sure that CAP is represented at key events.

• Representing CAP views to national, regional and local government.

8. Theological Development
Facilitating the development of theological and other resources which reflect 

• the lived experience of people and communities struggling against poverty, biblical sources, personal faith and other theological writing.

• wider analysis of social, political and economic issues.

Accountability and relationships 

The Chief Executive is accountable to the elected Council of Management. Regular contact is maintained with the Officers Group, and in particular the Chair.

The Chief Executive provides line management to the other members of the Senior Leadership and Management Team, and works closely with other members of the CAP staff team, and external partners. 

Other details about employment

Duration: Permanent contract with six month probationary period.

Hours: 35 hours per week including occasional 'unsocial' hours, weekend working and overnight travelling for which Time Off in Lieu is provided.

Salary: Church Action on Poverty Salary Band L, starting at scale point 43 on the NJC scales (currently £52,805 pay award pending).  Rising by increments after 3 years and every 2 years thereafter to point 46 (currently £56,073), paid monthly on the 14th day of each month.

Pension: Church Action on Poverty operates the Nest auto-enrolment pension scheme, and contributes a 10% employer contribution provided the staff member commits to making a 5% employee contribution.

The role

As the breadth and volume of our fundraising activity has grown over the last couple of years, an opportunity has arisen for a detail orientated and enthusiastic individual to join our database team. This role will be line managed by the Database Manager, with a dotted line to the Senior Database Officer to ensure the smooth running of our income processing activity, making a significant impact for the charity, and enabling excellent supporter care.

The team

Our dynamic fundraising department are preparing for an ambitious multimillion-pound campaign in support of a ground-breaking cancer centre on the site of the Royal Free Hospital. We pride ourselves on being a supporter focused and agile function, working at the heart of the charity to deliver impact for patients and staff across our hospitals.

Responsible for attracting and retaining donors, and delivering an outstanding supporter experience, the fundraising department comprises two teams which work closely together to achieve our shared objectives:

- Our Public Fundraising team harnesses the support and energy of individuals and groups, helping them to give back in the way that works for them. This includes committed giving, in memory support, gifts in wills, and fundraising events and challenges. Our Philanthropy and Campaign teams builds relationships with individual philanthropists, trusts, foundations, and corporate organisations which give, or have potential to give, £10,000 to the charity each year. They lead major appeal activity for the charity, currently focused on our exciting cancer campaign which is due to launch in 2025.

- Our database team sit within Fundraising, with their work underpinning and supporting the entire department.

About the Degrees Initiative  

The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth. Degrees is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but we believe that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions.  

Degrees’ programmatic work is centred on capacity-building through research grants and North–South and South-South collaboration schemes, outreach activities, and cross-cutting community-building. As part of this, Degrees runs workshops in the Global South that bring new voices into the SRM conversation, and our research funds support scientists and other experts in developing countries as they research what SRM could mean for their regions and become part of a global research community.

The Programmes Officer role offers a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to help scale up the organisation’s work, building on the successes of the last decade, and to help the most climate-vulnerable countries make their own minds up about SRM.  

To act as an enthusiastic ambassador for the charity; building strong relationships across a variety of networks to support and develop the public presence of the charity and community fundraising income. Key Duties

Fundraising:

• Be the primary point of contact for new and existing supporters.
• Proactively look for opportunities to support and develop local fundraising initiatives.
• Develop and deliver a varied range of fundraising activities to a range of audiences, including events and campaigns.

Key Responsibilities 

Engagement & Social Media 

• Manage and monitor all online patient communities responding to community messages and comments with empathy and timeliness 

• Moderate relevant support online community groups, ensuring they are safe, active, and welcoming spaces 

• Identify themes and areas of interest to advocate internally for MSUK response to meeting community need 

• Signpost our Individual Support service, identify and flag individual enquiries to the Individual Support Lead 

• Working with our Campaign & Comms Lead, grow the charity’s presence across social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok) 

• Develop content that resonates with patients, families, and supporters, amplifying community stories and voices 

• Build and manage our lived experience co-production group ‘Metabolic Advisory Council’ 

Community Insight & Advocacy 

• Functioning as the ‘internal expert’ on IMD communities for all MSUK team members 

• Using our Contact Record Management system to log and manage community database to provide timely, relevant insight to team members when required 

• Work with Head of Insight & Advocacy to engage and support communities in relation to timelines for insight work 

Events & Campaigns 

• Plan, organise, and execute online and in-person community events (support groups, awareness days, family meetups, annual conference) 

• Collaborate with the team to deliver campaigns around awareness, fundraising, and education 

• Work with Virtual Support Assistant to coordinate speakers, logistics, communications, and follow-ups for all events with  

Relationship & Partnership Management 

• Build and maintain relationships with other patient advocacy groups, charities, and health organisations 

• Represent the charity at external events, meetings, and forums relevant to the rare disease space 

• Seek opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and joint initiatives 

Community Fundraising 

• Work with Fundraising lead on community support for individual and events fundraising including event research, donor journey support and online promotion 
   

Person Specification 

Essential 

• Experience managing online communities and/or social media platforms in a professional or volunteer capacity 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

• Strong organisational skills and event planning experience 

• Empathetic and sensitive to the lived experiences of patients and carers 

• Ability to work independently, from home, and as part of a small, dynamic team 

• Confident, keen to travel and enjoys in-person events and networking  

Desirable 

• Personal or professional experience within the rare disease, health, or charity sectors 

• Experience managing partnerships or external relationships 

• Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Mailchimp, Eventbrite, or similar

The Role

Reporting to the Community Fundraising Manager, you be responsible for generating and maximising income related to community supporter led events and initiatives.  

The person will: 

· Provide excellent stewardship, on-going support and motivation to supporters organising their own ‘in aid of’ Leeds Hospitals Charity fundraising and those taking part in ‘own place’ events.

· Identify, establish, and manage new fundraising volunteer groups who will help support the charity through their own fundraising and contacts including volunteers who will support the community fundraising function.

· Work alongside other fundraising colleagues across the charity to help deliver team income streams (e.g. hospital fundraising, legacies, individual giving, events).

· Work closely with the Communications Team to ensure supporter led events receive adequate PR coverage and are planned into the charity’s communications calendar.

The successful candidate will have:

· Good communication and presentation skills.

· Excellent interpersonal and networking skills.

· Ability to prioritise, plan and organise workload.

· It is desirable, but not essential to have experience of stewarding charity supporters and volunteer fundraising groups or similar.

The Role

To implement its vision, the charity has identified five strategic goals. As Grants and Operations Officer, you will support Goal 5, which is to mobilise a global movement for Bible engagement. You will do this by working closely with the International Operations Manager, Head of Global Relationships and with other teams to facilitate aspects of grant-making to other Societies around the world, ensuring compliance and good stewardship.

This role will also contribute to the success of the International team’s broader work by providing operational support to projects and events that fall under this strategic goal.
