We Are Family is an extraordinary peer support community for adopters and prospective adopters. We’re there for parents throughout their adoption journey. Online and in person, our parents’ groups, events, resources, podcasts and talks offer mutual support, information and inspiration to adopters and those considering adoption. We currently operate across Greater London and the Home Counties, with ambitions to scale nationally over the coming years. 

The Role

We Are Family is seeking to appoint a committed and motivated Treasurer who will work closely with the Board of Trustees and play an active part in the governance of the organisation’s finances.

This is a voluntary opportunity with associated Trustee expenses -  such as travel / childcare -  covered by We Are Family.  The Company Secretary can be based anywhere in the UK. 

Commitment

• We Are Family typically holds four Board meetings per year

• In addition to being involved in Board meetings, the Treasurer should expect to spend 8-10 hours each month on work related to the finances of the charity.

• The normal term of appointment for a Treasurer is three years, after which there is the opportunity to renew for a further three-year period. 

Skills and Experience 

In this role you will:

• Advise on the financial implications of We Are Family’s strategic plan.

• Be an active member of the We Are Family Finance, Fundraising & Resources Committee who meet once every quarter.

• Oversee presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the board of trustees.

• Lead on the board’s duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly controlled, invested and economically spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.

• Lead the development and implementation of financial reserves, cost management and investment policies.

• Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity.

• Oversee the implementation of and monitoring specific financial controls and adherence to systems.

• Oversee the charity’s financial risk management process.

• Review and approve payments (including payroll).

• Be the main point of contact for We Are Family’s bank.

• Act as a counter signatory on important applications to funders.

• Liaise with the appropriate member of staff responsible for the financial activities of the organisation.

• Liaise with the external auditors or independent examiner on specific issues such as the auditor’s or examiner’s management letter and the related board representations. 

This role would suit an individual with:

• Knowledge of charity governance and management

• Experience in a compliance, risk or business management role

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Organisation skills, with the ability to work to deadlines

• Good IT skills, to include Zoom and Google Suite or MS Office.

Although many of our current Board members are adopters themselves, we are also keen to recruit suitably qualified people who are not, but who can demonstrate a commitment to the values and mission of We Are Family.

Debt Justice is looking for a Treasurer to support our board to meet our financial responsibilities. Debt Justice is a UK based campaigning organisation that challenges poverty and inequality caused by unjust debt. In solidarity with global allies, we actively challenge the way that debt is used to sustain colonialism and exploitation in the global economy.  At the same time, we use a community organising approach to build the collective power of people with lived experience of debt in local communities across the UK. Background 

Home-Start North and West Gloucestershire exists to offer support to families with children under 5 living in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean. We are part of Home-Start UK. 

Thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers and staff, we are able to work alongside parents and help them navigate the challenges they are facing in their parenting journey to help give children the best possible start in life. 

The Treasurer and Trustee Role 

We are looking for a treasurer to join the Board of Trustees and to take the financial lead on our board.  The ideal candidate will have experience of finance management and is able to help ensure the right operational and strategic decisions are made for the long-term future stability of the charity. 

Key Responsibilities:  

• Liaise with the Home Start Team and Trustees to ensure the long-term financial viability of the charity. 

• Present the financial position and broader context at Trustee meetings. 

• Work in partnership with the Operations Manager/Finance Lead and clearly understand the financial needs of the charity giving financial support when required. 

• Oversee the production of our annual budgets and work closely with our accountants.  To also give input when required to our payroll provider. 

• Ensure the Board of Trustees are aware of their financial duties, responsibilities and communicate how they need to comply with all legislation. 

• To work in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements set out by Home-Start UK.

• Provide oversight and guidance where necessary of accounts prepared for funders and relevant statutory bodies. 

• Act as counter signatory on charity cheques and some applications to funders, approve payments on banking systems and spending approval in accordance with financial management processes. 

• Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and external financial advisors are reviewed when required. 

You should: 

• Have knowledge and experience of accounting and audit practices. 

• Be able to interrogate and interpret financial statements. 

• Be able to communicate financial information in a meaningful and understandable way.

• Have strong working knowledge of accounting software (we use Xero). 

• Have strong attention to detail. 

Time requirement: 

The role will require a time commitment of approximately 10 hours per month.

This includes up to 12 board meetings a year of approximately 2 hours each (some held online and some in our Winchcombe office) and the Home-Start NW Gloucestershire AGM.  

You may also need to attend some meetings with the operations manager, finance lead and our external accountant to ensure clarity of finances and direct where required. 

Term of office: 

The Treasurer’s initial term is two years.

The trustees can then re-elect for a further one, two or three term(s) if the Treasurer would like to continue their position.

Lake District Music is a thriving organisation bringing music of the highest quality to audiences in the heart of the Lakes, as well as giving young artists the opportunity to perform and learn together. We are looking for a new Treasurer as we begin a new era.

Who we are

Lake District Music (LDM) is run by a strong Board of Trustees, which has been responsible for maintaining and developing LDM for almost 40 years. The Pirate Castle is looking for a Treasurer.  We are an iconic Camden-based community boating charity, established for 55 years.  Our well-known castle building sits on the banks of the Regent's Canal.  We rent out our community space and offer a range of watersports.  Kayaking and canal boating are core to our work and we strive to tackle disadvantage and support our community by offering subsidised sport and recreation.  The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fiancial analysis or accounting, ideally with a professional accountancy qualification.  Previous experience in a Treasurer role would be an advantage.

The Board of Trustees of Streetwise Opera is seeking a new Trustee who can take on the role of  Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. We are looking for our new Treasurer to have the following skills and experience:

• A background in Financial Management/Accountancy. Knowledge of charity finance is an advantage but otherwise individuals with sound commercial experience and the skills to scrutinise and oversee the accounts of a growing charity, and advise Trustee Board on financial management.

Set up in 1993, we support families with at least one child under five in Bracknell Forest. We are an independent charity, and although associated with the federation of Home-Start UK, our trustees independently govern our direction and manage our finances. As the cost of living crises impact on families, we’re needed more than ever; our trustees are planning our future, and need good financial governance in order to survive and grow.

Our income in 2024/25 will be ~£140k, so we’re a small charity, with a big impact.

The role and what we are looking for in a new Treasurer 

Our Board includes people with experience and skills in support for Early Years; we’d expect our new Treasurer to have empathy with our cause and the families we support.

As someone with a professional background in accounting or finance, you’ll use your expertise to help ensure sound fiscal decision-making across all Home-Start Bracknell Forest projects.  We’d strongly welcome your financial or bookkeeping qualifications, although our finances aren’t complex. An understanding of how charity finance works is important, of course, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees. Support from our employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day finances.

 You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as support from local charity-support organisations is always available. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee including access to external training.

We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for fresh expertise and experience from a variety of backgrounds to our charity. The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, contact and liaison with other trustees and employees is expected.

They take in stray and abandoned cats and ensure they receive the veterinary care and attention they deserve, help raise funds, promote neutering and help spread cat welfare messages. Our volunteer treasurers maintain the finances of local groups and teams, ensuring they hold the funds needed to continue their vital work. Cats Protection relies solely on donations from generous members of the public, and our volunteer treasurers help make sure these funds are spent in the most effective way.  

What can you expect to be doing?

• Preparing budgets
• Keeping accurate financial records
• Reporting financial records via ‘Cashlog’ (Cats Protection supplied software)
• Paying invoices and volunteer expenses
• Being part of a team which ensures there are sufficient funds to meet expenditure
• Updating and advising others on income received, expenditure and available funds
• Managing and monitoring donations made to the group
• Following financial procedures e.g. Gift Aid returns and VAT claims

You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge and make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens by overseeing the finances of a local volunteer groups or team. You will meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.

We’re looking for someone with

• Experience or knowledge of accounting, book keeping and/or good numeracy skills
• The ability to collect and present information clearly and logically
• Good communication skills
• Willingness to be part of a team
• Basic IT skills to use Cats Protection systems - training and support can be provided
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• The ability to use own initiative  
• Committee volunteers need to be aged 18+

Time expectation

Our current volunteer treasurers usually spend between 2 to 4 hours per week in this role. More hours may be required at certain times, such as towards the end of the financial year but support is always available. 

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.
