The Opportunity

An exceptional interim Director of Finance & Operations (DFO) is sought to join at a pivotal moment in this organisation’s journey.

Operating in a challenging financial context, with a deficit budgeted for the current financial year following a major change programme, the incoming DFO will play a critical role in restoring financial stability, strengthening governance, and ensuring robust infrastructure across finance, IT, facilities and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide effective leadership of Finance, IT, Governance and Facilities, ensuring development and implementation of strategies and effective practices across all operational areas.
• Drive financial recovery and sustainability: deliver robust financial planning, budgeting, reporting and control processes, while providing clear and strategic advice to the Board and Executive Director.

The Candidate

• Professional accountancy qualification and significant leadership experience at Director level, ideally including the charity sector.
• A strong track record of restoring financial stability and leading organisations through periods of financial and cultural change.
• Experience of managing governance, compliance, IT and central services.
• Excellent judgement, interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to handle sensitive and complex issues (e.g. disciplinary/capability cases, compliance matters, decision-making in ambiguity).

About you

About the role

The role will involve the management of the day-to-day financial activities, VAT, gift aid, payroll and the monthly, quarterly and annual reconciliations and statutory accounts preparation. The job holder will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Finance Officer and volunteers within the team. There will be a requirement to work closely with the income generating staff, budget holders, auditors, banks and credit card providers on a regular basis.  The Finance Manager will be responsible for managing the Finance Officer and Finance volunteer.

This is an exciting time to join Liverpool Zoe’s Place and the Finance Manager is a new post for the organisation. The Baby Hospice transferred to the new charity on May 1st 2025 with great potential for commissioning, and with a healthy financial platform due to the generosity of businesses and the public in Liverpool. This is a new start for Liverpool Zoe’s Place and our plans for a brand new state of the art hospice are agreed and we will move into the new hospice by June 2026, with all the required funding in place.

This post is to manage and co-ordinate the smooth running of the finance department ensuring all processes and procedures are streamlined, efficient and produced in a timely manner. This will involve the management of daily financial matters and overseeing the production of the monthly management accounts for both the hospice and its commercial companies. About the Role

As Finance Manager, you will play a key role in managing financial processes and ensuring smooth operations. You will:

• Manage the accounts receivable function ensuring that invoices are raised in a timely manner, receipts are recorded on the accounting system and in liaison with the relevant managers ensure that outstanding balances are followed up on a regular and frequent basis
• Manage the accounts payable function ensuring that invoices are paid in a timely manner and supporting line managers with coding and uploading via HubDoc as necessary. Monitor entries in HubDoc (the application used to upload invoices to Xero – the accounting system used) to ensure any failed or unpublished invoices are followed up and accurately processed
• Bank and other Balance Sheet account reconciliations
• Work closely with colleagues in the Programmes team to manage the receipt of income from charitable activities
• Liaise with the Development team and provide weekly breakdowns of grants and donations received to ensure that income can be properly recorded on the donor database
• Monitor and reconcile credit card and petty cash payments ensuring that all financial controls are adhered to
• Supporting the Finance Director with month and year end procedures and reporting

About You

We are looking for a proactive and organised individual who can work both independently and collaboratively. You will bring:

• Have a solid understanding and experience of core accounting functions, financial management and bookkeeping – ideally in the charity or not for profit sector – including managing both accounts receivable and accounts payable
• Have good Excel skills and demonstrable experience of using accounting systems (we currently use Xero)
• Have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, accuracy and attention to detail
• Have a good understanding of the management of restricted and unrestricted funds in charities
• Possess good communication skills and the ability to work with both finance and non-finance colleagues
• Have experience of preparing schedules and documents for external audit
• Thrive in a small team and are happy to work collaboratively as well as alone on a wide range of finance tasks

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

Beacon is now in its second decade and has grown substantially over the last three years, including a rebrand and expansion into international projects. To support this growth, we are seeking a highly organised, proactive, and intuitive Admin & Operations Officer to help ensure the smooth running of our daily activities and core functions.

This varied role spans many aspects of our work, from administration and resource management to supporting the systems and tools that keep Beacon working efficiently. You’ll work across the charity, supporting our executive leadership, projects teams, and fundraising activities, as well as and ensuring colleagues have the information and resources they need to deliver for our beneficiaries.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the charity and in supporting senior staff. As you settle into the role, you’ll have opportunities to develop skills in areas such as financial management, executive support, relationship management, stewardship, or project logistics, depending on your interests and the charity’s needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone at an early stage of their career, with full training and support provided. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Organisational administration

• Lead on day-to-day operational processes to ensure the efficient running of the organisation.
• Provide executive support to the CEO and COO, including diary coordination, scheduling, and meeting logistics.
• Oversee internal financial processes, including processing expenses and invoices, documenting charity income and outgoings, ensuring accurate record keeping, and liaising with our external accounting team.
• Coordinate team activities such as strategy days, team-building events, and the annual Christmas party.
• Support HR-related processes such as managing staff anniversaries, birthdays, departures, and basic record-keeping.
• Act as liaison between the CEO and Board of Trustees as required.
• Collaborate with building management to ensure smooth operation of office facilities.

Fundraising administration

• Provide administrative support for funding applications and reports, including document preparation and submission.
• Monitor timelines and deadlines for all fundraising-related commitments, ensuring requirements are met.
• Maintain accurate fundraising records, keeping donor and income information up to date in our systems.
• Liaise with fundraising partners, sponsors, and donors as required.

N.B. The fundraising aspect of this role is focused on providing administrative and logistical support. This is not a fundraising position, and applicants are not expected to be responsible for income generation.

Team-wide support

• Monitor and respond to incoming enquiries via phone, email, and the Contact Us form, ensuring timely and professional communication.
• Process and respond to volunteer applications, maintaining accurate records and liaising with applicants as required.
• Manage organisational resources, including internal supplies and external materials, monitoring stock levels and coordinating reorders.

For this level, we are looking for demonstrated competence in  managing complex administrative tasks, coordinating across teams, and supporting senior leadership with minimal supervision. The Organisation

Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. We exist to end the pain and suffering and loss of life among people affected by eating disorders:

• We help them to understand their illness, support them to get treatment and help them towards recovery.
• We help families and carers know how best to support a loved one into, through and out of treatment.
• And we train teachers, health professionals and other key individuals to spot when someone is showing the early signs of an eating disorder, how to talk to them and how to encourage them to seek and get treatment as quickly as possible.

We use our experience to campaign for better government policy and health service practice that addresses the challenges faced by people with eating disorders, always guided by the experience of our beneficiaries and the expertise of clinicians. We work both nationally and locally, focusing on three priority areas: early intervention, family empowerment and prevention & cure.

The Role

We are seeking a strategic, experienced, and inspiring leader to join Beat as our next Director of Finance and Resources. This is a rare opportunity to help lead a fast-growing, mission-driven organisation at a pivotal moment in its journey. You will join a truly collaborative Executive team where decisions are made collectively, ideas are shared openly, and every Director plays a vital role in shaping Beat’s strategy and future. Together, we will guide the organisation as we launch our new five-year strategy, ensuring that we can continue to build financial resilience, grow our reach, strengthen our impact, and remain a sustainable charity.

In this role, you will not only oversee the financial health of the charity, but also shape the systems, people strategy, and resources that underpin everything we do. Your leadership will be instrumental in embedding robust and transparent financial management, driving operational excellence, and ensuring that our people and infrastructure are fully equipped to deliver our ambitious goals.

You will lead a multi-disciplinary team covering finance, HR, IT, and facilities, providing clear direction and supportive leadership. With direct line management of the Finance Manager, HR & Governance Manager, and Senior Project Manager and Evaluation Lead, you will ensure that all areas of Finance and Resources operate efficiently, sustainably, and in close partnership with colleagues across the charity.

The Person

This role will suit someone who thrives on collaboration, innovation, and impact. You may already be working at Director level, or you may be ready to step up from leading a senior finance, HR, or operations function in a larger organisation. Either way, you will bring the vision and experience to strengthen Beat’s foundations and the drive to help us reach new heights.

• Proven experience working as part of an Executive Team to lead an organisation, shaping strategy and delivering results through cross-functional collaboration.
• Significant experience leading organisation-wide HR strategy and operations, with a proven ability to build an inclusive, high-performing culture. CIPD qualification desirable but not essential.
• Proven experience leading finance in a complex organisation, ideally in the charity or not-for-profit sector to ensure long-term financial sustainability. Qualified accountant (CCAB-recognised body: ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or equivalent senior-level financial management experience. 
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence colleagues, Trustees, and external partners.
• Sound understanding of governance, compliance, and risk management in a regulated environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to Beat’s mission, values, and to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Develop and implement financial strategies that align with the company’s vision, goals, and growth objectives.

Financial Management & Reporting

Qualifications & Experience

• Professional finance qualification (e.g., CPA, ACA, ACCA, CFA) strongly preferred.

• 10+ years of progressive finance leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.

• Proven track record in financial strategy, planning, and execution within a growing or complex organization.

• Strong understanding of corporate finance, tax, compliance, and risk management.

• Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive business performance.

• Experience in charity sector an advantage
