Job Description

Join our team as an Editorial Assistant on a fixed-term maternity cover contract, helping us to support teachers, champion great teaching and raise the status of the profession by supporting the publication of our peer-reviewed journal.

Job Title - Editorial Assistant

Reports To - Content Editor 

Salary - £27,000 (FTE)

Contract - Part-time, fixed term until Friday 30 July 2027 (with the potential to extend)

Hours - 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE)

The Opportunity

Our publications and online learning resources support teachers to make a difference to the lives of millions of children across the country. Our peer-reviewed practitioner journal is used by teachers and educators to develop their evidence-informed practice.

We are recruiting within the content and publishing team to welcome an Editorial Assistant who believes in our mission to support the work we do. 

Over the coming months, the Editorial Assistant will keep the journal's peer review cycle on track, provide high-quality support to authors and reviewers and contribute to wider publishing activity across the Chartered College.

This would be an ideal opportunity for a highly organised, detail-oriented person with an interest in publishing and education. You will:

• take ownership of the peer review administration process, from sourcing reviewers to tracking deadlines and formatting reports
• work collaboratively with colleagues across the team, providing excellent customer service to authors and reviewers
• help to keep the professional membership organisation's publications running to a high standard at an exciting time for the College.

Peer Review Administration 

Most of your time will be spent supporting the peer review process for our practitioner journal. This includes researching and identifying suitable reviewers, matching them to article abstracts and manuscripts, and coordinating the allocation of two reviewers per article. You will send articles out to reviewers with the relevant guidelines, track response deadlines, and follow up as needed. Once reviews are received, you will format the reports to a consistent standard and save them to the shared Google Drive. We currently organise our workflow around Asana and Google Drive, and you'll work closely with the Content Editor to keep the review cycle on track. You will need to be someone who can manage several articles at different stages simultaneously and take pride in keeping things well-organised and on time.

Author support and proofreading 

You will spend some of your time on proofreading and editorial tasks, including marking up corrections on PDFs and supporting the Content Editor with copy amendments during the production process. You will also act as a first point of contact for authors, providing clear and friendly communication to support them through the publication process – from submission through to final publication. You will be expected to respond to author queries professionally and promptly, escalating where needed, and to help maintain a positive experience for contributors to the journal.

Wider publishing support 

You will spend some of your time supporting wider publishing activity across the College, including uploading and updating content on WordPress and carrying out other publishing-related tasks as and when required. Beyond your core responsibilities, you will also participate in team meetings and be encouraged to take part in professional learning activities and training to maintain and develop your knowledge and skills.

Job purpose

To provide high-quality, intensive support to young dads and expectant fathers (aged 25 and under) across Tees Valley; to lead and coordinate peer support activity; to manage allocated budgets and contribute to funder reporting; and to take an active role in the development of NEYDL’s commissioned services in the region.

Hours - Full-time (35 hours per week). Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, with some evening and weekend working expected to meet the needs of the charity.

Key responsibilities

1. Direct support

•Provide in-person and online 1-to-1 support to young dads and non-birthing people, helping them address key challenges and achieve personal outcomes

•Assess new referrals and manage a complex caseload, prioritising according to need and risk

•Support young dads to attend key meetings with professionals (including child protection, child in need, family court and multi-agency forums)

•Help young dads to access wider opportunities including volunteering, employment, education and community activities

•Support young dads and their families to engage in father and child activities, stay and play sessions, and peer supported recreational activities

•Promote and support access to DigiDAD, NEYDL’s free e-learning platform, and other training and information resources

2. Peer support and group work

•Establish, coordinate and co-facilitate in-person peer support groups for young dads in Tees Valley

•Support the development and delivery of parenting, relationship skills and employability sessions in response to community-identified needs

•Support peer moderated video gaming groups as part of DigiDAD Gaming where relevant

3. Induction, onboarding and milestones

•Ensure every young dad is effectively inducted onto the NEYDL service, completing key onboarding steps and baseline self-evaluation measures

•Track and record progress against key milestones throughout the support journey, in line with NEYDL’s evaluation framework

•Ensure all relevant data is recorded accurately and on time in NEYDL’s data management system

4. Budget and targets

•Take ownership of allocated project budgets, monitoring expenditure and liaising with the Programme Manager (Commissioned Services) and Finance Officer as required

•Work proactively to achieve agreed referral rate targets, taking responsibility for building pathways and relationships that generate consistent referrals

•Contribute to the preparation of funder reports under the oversight of the Programme Manager and Fundraiser, providing accurate data and case study material

•Support the effective recording, monitoring and reporting of programme performance via NEYDL’s data management system and evaluation framework

•Comply with all monitoring, evaluation and reporting requirements, both internal and funder-related

•Support the work of NEYDL’s research partners and independent evaluators as required

8. Collaboration and partnerships

•Work in partnership with key stakeholders in Tees Valley to improve the service offer for young dads, including Family Hub teams, social care, health, housing, education and voluntary sector organisations

•Build referral pathways and maintain strong working relationships with local services and networks

•Develop and build effective relationships with principal stakeholders, supporters and referral partners

9. Advocacy and engagement

•Represent NEYDL at external events and meetings to raise awareness of the service and influence other organisations

•Promote, campaign and advocate with and on behalf of young men, ensuring NEYDL continues to be a leading voice for positive change

•Work proactively to enable young dads to influence the design and delivery of the service, including supporting their participation in community leadership programmes

•Support the charity’s communications and engagement activity, including contributing content to annual reports, social media and local media

10. Other

•Deputise for the Programme Managers as required

Senior Young Dads Worker (Neurodiverse)

About NEYDL

North East Young Dads and Lads (NEYDL) was founded in 2017 and has grown rapidly to become one of the UK’s most recognised organisations supporting young dads, men aged 25 and under in a fathering role. Our vision is for young dads to be valued and supported as parents. In 2024/25 we supported 217 young dads directly and achieved 100% satisfaction among the young dads we work with.

We are a non-judgmental organisation built on mutual trust, respect and honesty. Many of our staff are young dads themselves or have lived experience relevant to the communities we serve.

About this role

We use the term ‘young dads’ to refer to young dads, expectant dads and non-birthing partners aged 25 and under. This includes people within this age bracket who self-identify as father figures, including kinship carers and non-birthing partners.

We use the term ‘neurodiverse’ as an inclusive term covering young dads who are autistic, have ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia or other forms of neurodivergence, whether formally diagnosed, self-identified or awaiting assessment. We recognise that neurodivergent young dads can face additional barriers in accessing parenting support, including in how services are structured, communicated and delivered, and that these barriers are often compounded by stigma, exclusion or a lack of appropriate adjustment.

This is a dedicated role to ensure neurodivergent young dads can access the high quality support NEYDL offers, and that our wider service offer is genuinely accessible to them. You will provide direct, adapted support to neurodivergent young dads, while also building NEYDL’s organisational understanding of how to work effectively and inclusively with this group.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a motivated and experienced worker with a genuine understanding of neurodivergence and its impact on young fathers, and the ability to adapt support, communication and activities accordingly. You will be a confident networker, able to build relationships with both young dads and the services and organisations that support neurodivergent people across the North East.

Key responsibilities

Income generation and business development

•Identify and develop opportunities to secure commissioned services and contracts with local authorities, NHS bodies, family hubs, children’s services, early help teams and voluntary sector organisations

•Lead on the sale of NEYDL’s training products to professional audiences nationally, managing the full sales cycle from prospecting to close

Longer-term targets (to April 2029)

The following targets relate to the areas of work this role will contribute to, alongside the DigiDAD Programme Manager and wider team:

• Professionals trained through NEYDL's training products: 50 by April 2027; 350 annually by April 2029
• New professional DigiDAD registrations: 750 by April 2027; 1,400 annually by April 2029
• New young dad DigiDAD registrations: 510 by April 2027; 1,000 annually by April 2029

The Business Development Manager will play a central role in building the relationships and income pipeline that drives the training targets. DigiDAD registration growth is led by the DigiDAD Engagement Officer and wider team, with the Business Development Manager contributing through referrals identified in the course of other work.

Alongside these targets, NEYDL currently holds commissioned service contracts with several local authorities: Durham, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Gateshead. A key priority for the Business Development Manager will be to maintain and strengthen these relationships, ensuring contracts are renewed and the value of our work to each commissioner is clearly evidenced. Beyond existing contracts, we are keen to secure commissioned funding in areas of the North East where we currently have limited or no presence.

About The Role

We are currently recruiting for two Practice Lead positions. One role will support Local House Projects (LHPs) in the North, while the location and focus of the second role is still to be confirmed.

As a Practice Lead, you will have primary responsibility for supporting a group of LHPs, while also contributing to wider areas of our work. You will work alongside staff within LHPs to create environments where young people are supported to make a positive transition into adulthood.

A key part of the role is working in partnership with the Care Leavers National Movement and the wider House Project team to ensure that young people remain at the heart of everything we do. You will support young people to shape and drive their own LHPs, while helping to develop and share excellent practice at both local and national levels.

About the organisation

The charity was established in August 2018 as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), they support local authorities in setting up Local House Projects for young people leaving care. Believing every care leaver should have this option, the charity empowers them to create and sustain homes.

The initiative, co-designed with young people, began by asking, "What makes a house a home?” Local House Projects in England and Scotland help care leavers transition into permanent tenancies, fostering a supportive community. The charity has helped over 780 young people successfully move into their own homes, with no evictions or tenancy breakdowns, ensuring a secure start for their futures.

This role has become available due to growth of the charity.

As Programme Director, you will lead the delivery and continued development of the Child Wellbeing Practitioner programme, ensuring it provides an inclusive, high-quality student experience and meets UCL, BPS and national curriculum standards

• A PhD or professional doctorate in clinical psychology or child mental health, alongside a relevant professional qualification or substantial experience in children’s mental health

• Strong knowledge of children and young people’s psychological training programmes, CBT interventions and mental health practice in CAMHS or educational settings
• Proven experience of leading, managing and supporting staff while balancing competing priorities and programme demands

Key details

Hours: Part-time: 14 hours over 2 days - the postholder will need to work on Fridays and either Tuesday or Thursday.  Fridays are in person at Anna Freud, London, during termtime.  Usual working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00. Flexible working is possible.

Salary: £64,100 FTE per annum, plus 6% contributory pension scheme

Job purpose

To lead and manage the DadVocates project, a four-year National Lottery-funded programme training volunteer young dads as peer advocates for young fathers in children’s social care proceedings; delivering professional training to social workers; and working towards the embedding of father-inclusive practice across children’s social care teams in five local authorities.

Hours - Full-time (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, with some evening and weekend working expected to meet the needs of the project

Location - Hybrid, with travel across the North East required and activity based in Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Gateshead/Newcastle and County Durham

Key responsibilities

1. Project management

•Take day-to-day responsibility for the management and delivery of the DadVocates project across all strands of activity

•Manage the project budget, monitor expenditure and liaise with the CEO and Finance Officer

•Update and maintain NEYDL’s Evaluation Framework with DadVocates-specific indicators and methodologies within the first two months of the project start date

•Ensure the project meets its funder milestones and KPIs, maintaining accurate records of outputs and outcomes

•Produce quarterly progress reports for internal review and contribute to annual funder reports

•Commission and manage the external evaluator for the four-year evaluation

•Identify and escalate risks and challenges to the CEO, recommending solutions

2. Steering Committee

•Chair and manage the project Steering Committee, which meets every two months and comprises young dads, NEYDL frontline staff, the safeguarding lead, social work professionals and academic partners

•Induct Steering Committee members, including young dads, into their roles, providing tailored support to ensure they can contribute confidently alongside professionals

•Use Steering Committee meetings to review progress, identify challenges and agree recommendations for the next period of delivery

3. Co-creating the DadVocate training programme

•Work with training and research providers, young dads and Steering Committee members to co-create a 100-hour peer advocacy training programme for volunteer DadVocates

•Deliver the DadVocate training programme alongside NEYDL staff and delivery partners

•Lead annual reviews of the training programme and update content in response to learning and feedback

4. Managing and supporting volunteer DadVocates

•Recruit and train 10 young dad volunteers per year (40 over four years), all with lived experience of young fatherhood 

•Provide ongoing mentoring, supervision and wellbeing support to all active DadVocate volunteers: at least 50 hours per volunteer per year

•Set clear objectives for each volunteer, conduct regular appraisals and team meetings, and support their professional development and progression

•Recognise that DadVocates are young dads with lived experience rather than professional backgrounds, and provide the high level of structured support this requires, including supporting them to navigate professional environments with confidence

•Support the progression of volunteers into employment, further training and community leadership roles

5. Matching DadVocates with young dads in CSC proceedings

•Build and maintain referral pathways with social services, midwifery, Family Nurse Partnerships, Family Hubs and other local networks across target local authorities

•Match 100 young dads over four years with a volunteer DadVocate (10 in year 1, rising to 40 in year 4)

•Work closely with NEYDL’s Senior Young Dads Workers, who hold cases, to coordinate peer advocacy support within CSC proceedings

•Maintain oversight of active advocacy arrangements, ensuring DadVocates are appropriately supported and that safeguarding obligations are met at all times

•Engage directly with young dad beneficiaries through steering committee meetings, evaluation sessions and project learning events

6. Professional training for social workers

•Co-create professional training content with social workers and young dads on the Steering Committee, drawing on national research and NEYDL’s practice experience

•Deliver half-day induction training to 15-20 social workers per local authority at the outset of each area’s involvement, co-facilitated by young dads or DadVocate volunteers

•Deliver annual refresher training in each local authority

•Facilitate quarterly case review and learning meetings with social workers in each local authority, involving DadVocate volunteers

•Co-design guidance on what father-inclusive practice looks like within children’s social care teams, with social workers and young dads (first version in year 2; updated version in year 4)

•Organise and host two information-sharing events for social care professionals in years 2 and 4 (approximately 100 professionals per event)

7. Monitoring, evaluation and learning

•Coordinate data collection with young dads, DadVocate volunteers and social workers using NEYDL’s evaluation tools and new instruments co-designed for this project

•Produce annual evaluation reports and disseminate learning through NEYDL’s wider networks, events and conferences

•Share learning through stakeholder events, professional networks and NEYDL’s regular sector-facing activity

8. Safeguarding

•Ensure robust safeguarding arrangements are in place for all project activity, particularly for DadVocate volunteers operating within CSC proceedings

•Work closely with NEYDL’s Safeguarding Lead to ensure policies and protocols relevant to the project are current, understood and followed by volunteers and partners

•Act as first point of contact for safeguarding concerns arising within the DadVocates project

9. Collaboration and partnerships

•Work closely with NEYDL’s Senior Young Dads Workers as case holders, ensuring a joined-up and consistent approach to supporting young dads involved in the project

•Build and maintain relationships with academic, statutory and voluntary sector partners

•Work with the Business Development Manager to help secure longer-term Local Authority funding for DadVocates, using evidence of impact from the project to support conversations with Local Authorities and expand the project’s reach beyond the areas and targets in the original funding bid

•Represent NEYDL and the DadVocates project at external meetings, networks and conferences

•Contribute to NEYDL’s wider communications and engagement activity

10. Other

•Deputise for the CEO as required

•Report to the Board of Trustees in person or in writing on a quarterly basis as required

2. Onboarding and engagement

•Deliver onboarding sessions and demonstrations to professionals, showing them what DigiDAD offers and how to use it with the young dads they support

•Deliver and/or support regular webinars for current and prospective DigiDAD users, covering both professional and young dad audiences as needed

•Support professionals through the registration and onboarding process, and help them confidently introduce DigiDAD to the young dads they work with 

•Encourage service beneficiaries to engage with DigiDAD content through dissemination of DigiDAD news, updates, and information across our in-house communication channels e.g. WhatsApp groups and DigiDAD Gaming community on Discord

3. Feedback and evaluation

•Hold structured conversations with young dads who use DigiDAD to gather feedback on content, design and user experience

•Gather feedback on outreach materials and messaging, and share insights with the DigiDAD Programme Manager to inform evaluation, reporting and improvements 

4. Working with the Business Development Manager

•Maintain regular contact with NEYDL’s Business Development Manager, including a simple shared tracker to record and follow up leads

•Refer any commissioning or training sales opportunities identified through DigiDAD outreach to the Business Development Manager

•Follow up DigiDAD-interested contacts referred by the Business Development Manager

5. Recording and reporting

•Record outreach activity and registration data accurately and in a timely way, in line with NEYDL’s data management and evaluation systems

•Contribute ideas for campaign activity, content and service development based on direct engagement with users and professionals
