AAFDA was founded by Frank Mullane in memory of his sister Julia Pemberton and her son Will who were both killed by her ex-partner in 2003.

Each year, around 150 families lose a loved one to domestic homicide. The actual number of suicides as a result of domestic abuse remains unknown.  Most of these families suffer significant problems including relationship breakdown, job difficulties/loss and mental and physical health issues. We help these families in many ways, our prime function being to provide families in England and Wales with specialist peer support and expert and specialist advocacy for the range of statutory reviews that will take place after domestic homicide.

AAFDA (Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse) is a growing Charity and to meet the demands of this growth, we are looking for exceptional candidates to join our team in a highly rewarding opportunity. Although home based, some travel will be required - frequency will be commensurate to the role. Our Specialist Advocates support families impacted by fatal domestic abuse through provision of lay advocacy, for and on behalf of, families with a range of statutory service providers (e.g. those conducting reviews and inquiries, social services, police, housing) and work to build good relations between all parties.  To ensure that families get the support they need, you will use AAFDA’s Home Office endorsed seven-step approach to working with individuals and families, to ensure that they receive the best possible support and advocacy to restore dignity and relief for families and to help them cope and recover. Through trauma-informed approaches, you will:

listen to families and advocate for them in a complex system that too often treats them as passive participants and overlooks the value of their insight.
provide information, support, guidance, advice and advocacy on Domestic Homicide Reviews, Mental Health Reviews, Inquests, Independent Office of Police Conduct inquiries and other types of inquiries.
manage families’ expectations of the legal and procedural processes facing them by supporting families in meetings with agencies such as health, police and local authorities.
give families practical help on a wide range of issues - including help with letter writing or advocating with employers and local authorities on the families’ behalf.
Support AAFDA in our bringing families together in AAFDA’s peer support events, such as the Hear Our Voice weekend and the on-line peer support Zoom sessions, where families can speak with others to share their experiences and stories. This will involve occasional evening work.

The Candidate
Proven experience in marketing, using marketing techniques effectively to grow income and/or engagement. This could be in a charity or commercial setting.
Experience in a fundraising or volunteering setting, regularly interacting with donors and/or customers to provide an excellent service or experience.
Experience using digital media platforms (e.g. social media, canva, mailchimp)
Experience using a donor or customer database.

About the Role

Your principal duties and responsibilities will include

About the role

We are looking for a Lead Trainer to oversee our non-accredited courses covering England and Wales. Current training courses include topics such as responding to domestic abuse, employer training, DASH risk assessment, and MARAC chairing, among others. You will also contribute to the development of new training courses in response to emerging needs from specific commissioners, while actively monitoring sector developments to ensure our offerings remain relevant and impactful.

You will be part of the SafeLives Training and Development Team, with shared responsibility for developing, delivering and continuing a range of courses from within our suite. We’re looking for two, mutually-supporting, Finance Business Partners to join our Finance team at Woodgreen, where their insight and initiative will help shape the future of our charity in these newly created positions.

Our successful candidates will individually and collectively contribute to the effective financial management of Woodgreen Pets Charity and its trading subsidiary, Wood Green Enterprises Limited (“WGEL”).  They will work closely with the Executive Leadership Team and senior leaders to provide expert financial guidance, insight, challenge, and assurance across a wide range of financial management, planning and analysis activities.

Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, but working independently within the charity and often with minimal supervision, you will be confident using your own initiative to identify opportunities, risks, and solutions.  You will provide actionable insights for budget holders, whilst maintaining rigorous attention to the provision of accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with relevant policies and procedures, and robust audit-ready record keeping.  You will:

• Build trust with decision makers and budget holders so that Finance Business Partner analysis, advice and guidance is actively sought and adds value in generating desired business outcomes.
• Provide insightful financial analysis, promoting commercial and risk awareness to inform decision making, providing constructive challenge and ensuring that financial governance, control and alignment to Woodgreen’s strategic plans is maintained.
• Be highly visible and engage early in supporting projects and leading them where required.  This will include the development of the financial aspects of business cases, particularly the financial aspects which ensure that business cases are of a consistent high quality and are robust and accurate.

The two roles will be equivalent, offering similar opportunities and challenges, but will be responsible for different areas of the charity’s work.  One role will partner with budget holders in the Income and Engagement Directorate, which includes responsibilities for regular audits of Woodgreen’s retail estate and may involve some regional travel.  The second role will partner with budget holders in the Pet and Corporate Services directorates, plus the CEO as the lead director for WGEL.

If you have:

• a detailed understanding of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs/XLOOKUPs, IF statements, and other advanced functions;
• the ability to manage and interpret large volumes of data and understand complex interdependencies;
• strong influencing, communication and negotiating skills;
• a strategic mindset;
• are emotionally intelligent, can see the bigger picture, and consider the human impact behind the numbers;

Purpose of the job:

Develop, lead, implement, and ensure internal and external communications strategies are maintained and in line with PCS policy.

Lead on the strategic direction of the unions communications and oversee delivery, digital strategy, membership engagement and internal communications.

To advise and work alongside the National Management Team, National Executive Committee and partners to devise and implement communications campaigns and projects.

To assist in maximising the potential for union growth, development and success, and to encourage membership participation through robust communication strategies.

To undertake a management role with direct responsibility for staff ensuring that the work of the communications team is in line with the wider objectives of the union.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Key areas

• Lead on, develop and implement internal and external communication strategies that align with the union's overall goals
• Create and oversee communication materials such as the creation of promotional and informative materials, digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video
• Conduct quality controls on all communications, ensuring that all union communications and materials have consistent and positive messaging and branding
• Responding to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally
• Contribute to the strategic development of the Unions policy objectives including the PCS planning process
• Provide support and have direct involvement through the National Management Team (NMT) in the unions bargaining, organising, campaigning, equality, learning and digital agendas
• Manage people and resources in the communications team
• Represent PCS at external meetings
• Provide advice to and lead relevant committees including the preparation and presentation of reports
• Monitor and report on issues and initiatives as requested
• Provide input into budgetary processes including bid preparation, monitoring and control where relevant

2. People Management

• Manage work allocation and workflow, future planning and support for officer team/line manager
• Motivate and manage individuals and the team as a whole to provide a high standard of service
• Check work standards and maintain consistent quality of delegated tasks
• Seek to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the team
• Through induction, the appraisal system and one-to-ones, identify staff training and development needs, train or organise formal/informal training
• Proactively promote diversity in line with the wider PCS approach
• Apply the staff conduct policies as and when required e.g. discipline, grievance, capability, dignity at work and IT security policies
• Provide advice and deal with complex issues related to staff management including disciplinary or grievance in consultation with line manager

• Ensure digitalisation, information and communications methods are effectively implemented and used to generate improvements
• Draft complex communications including briefs and reports to staff and members
• Communicate with members by producing circulars and briefings and by addressing meetings and conferences when required
• As necessary, represent PCS and liaise with outside bodies

4. Team Working

• Proactively promote team working and collaboration across the organisation
• Initiate, organise, lead and participate in team meetings as appropriate
