Due to three of our client's current Board members stepping down from their positions following completion of their six-year terms, they are looking to fill three vacancies on their Board with individuals who can strengthen their existing skills-based Board by bringing high level knowledge and experience in one or more of the below key areas:

Established in 1936 and one of Scotland’s leading wildlife bodies, the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club is a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) with some 3500 members.  Its purpose is to advance the study and appreciation of birds in Scotland by promoting their documentation, promoting interest in them, promoting their conservation, providing a focus for information about them and encouraging the appreciation of relevant creative arts.

The Club’s headquarters, which also feature a renowned ornithology library, wildlife art gallery and sales outlet, are in Aberlady, East Lothian.  Fifteen nationwide Branches are led by members who organise events, outings and projects in their areas.  Staff contribute a national series of events, conferences and training activities for members of all ages.  Publications include the highly regarded quarterly journal Scottish Birds, mobile app (Where to Watch Birds in Scotland), regional bird reports, e-newsletters and other online media.

The Club Manager will lead and oversee all aspects of running the Club, including its small team of staff, volunteers, an annual turnover of about £350,000 and assets which include built property (HQ).  They will champion and drive forward the Club’s vision and goals. There will be emphasis on strong leadership to manage and support staff, volunteers and trustees; ensuring the highest standard of services to members; planning and reporting on the annual programme of Club-wide events and developing future priorities.

KEY OBJECTIVES:

• To provide strong leadership and management in relation to staff and the provision of all aspects of the Club's delivery of services and support to its members, in line with its status and responsibilities as a SCIO.
• To liaise and work closely with the SOC’s Council and committees in their work, regularly reporting to and advising Council and Management Committee.

MAIN WORK AREAS

• Ensure the legal requirements of the SCIO are met, including preparation and submission of an Annual Report and Statement of Accounts to the Scottish charity regulator (OSCR)
• Oversee the planning and organisation of the Club’s autumn annual conference and AGM, and the joint SOC/BTO spring conference.
• Work with SOC Secretary to support the Club’s volunteer-led Council and committees, including timely production of papers, reports and minutes, as required.
• Review and update as necessary staff support for Club Branches.
• Together with relevant committees, develop and monitor forward planning for the Club.
• Ensure implementation of all H&S, safeguarding and risk management responsibilities, in line with external and internal policy and Risk Register needs.  Ensure regular review of policies, advising Management Committee and ensuring awareness of them wherever necessary among Council and Committee members, staff, contractors and volunteer leaders.
• Work with the Office Manager to ensure compliance with all necessary measures for the maintenance and management of Waterston House and its users. 
• Ensure appropriate insurance cover for all relevant Club needs, including property, people, events and activities.

• Oversee and support as appropriate all Club publications and media activities, including its website, Scottish Birds, newsletters and other communications.

• Explore additional avenues for Club funding, make recommendations to the Club office bearers and Council.

Role Summary

We are looking for a confident and experienced self-starter to join the Strategy & Communications division as the Government & Parliamentary Relations Manager. Your role is essential to ensure:

• Our relationships generate national and local engagement that helps us to advocate about the issues and practice that can enable high-quality careers support for young people across policy debate and delivery.
• We raise awareness of our work to the extent that our Government and parliamentary stakeholders can articulate what we do and why it matters nationally as well as locally in constituencies across the country.
• We initiate and hold strong relationships across Westminster, maintaining a robust management system to track and monitor engagement.

Key Responsibilities

• Working with the Department of Education (DfE) (our sponsor department) to help us build strong relationships with relevant DfE ministers, officials and their teams.
• Engaging and building policy-led relationships across wider Government – to enable cross-departmental engagement about CEC’s work.
• Building and maintaining cross-parliamentary support – to increase our awareness and support amongst key MPs and Peers and to respond well to their inquiries and commissions.
• Internal team operations – acting as CEC’s lead for internal government and parliamentary briefing to support the CEO and senior colleagues’ visits, meetings and engagements.

Essential Criteria

• Proven experience of engaging through the policy process – (1) developing policy ideas and (2) responding to consultations and briefing requests.
• Proven ability to engage senior and working level stakeholders and manage political, ministerial and departmental sensitivities.
• Communicate well (written and verbal) – confidently and with salience and the ability to not just report moments but offer context and direction. Competent and assured in providing sound counsel to senior colleagues.
• Analytical skills – you will be engaging data and evidence generated from CEC’s work and externally, and will be required to interpret findings and make and communicate connections in an understandable and interesting way.
• Collaborative and good at building relationships at all levels, both internally and with a range of external stakeholders.
• Adaptable, resilient and flexible with the ability to deal with complexity and ambiguity and work at pace.

The Role

This is a new role which will be focused on a specific project to initially set up and support our member led Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) task group and subgroups. These task groups, with your support, will lead the direction that our EDI membership initiatives take. One of the primary core initiatives will be the delivery of a mentoring scheme for our members with an inclusivity focus.

To be shortlisted for this post, you must have:

• Excellent Project Management skills and experience

• Demonstratable knowledge of the EDI space, leading practises and ideologies

• Previous experience of working with members/volunteers including in an advisory and secretariat capacity.

• An understanding of and preferably experience of managing mentoring schemes.

Experience of working in a membership organisation or knowledge of the engineering profession would be advantageous.

Short description of role:

As the Head of the Professional Conduct, your role entails managing and overseeing all functions of the committee and its associated panels or boards within the institution. Your primary responsibility is to ensure that these entities collectively meet their obligations to the institution's Trustee Board efficiently and effectively.

As the Manager of the Professional Conduct Department, you'll:

• Handle complex inquiries about professional conduct from members and others, following the Institution's rules closely.
• Supervise the complaints process, providing expertise and advice when decisions need to be made.
• Oversee the Professional Conduct Manager's administrative duties for the Committee.
• Manage the Disciplinary Board and its legal team, arranging training when needed.

• Handle appeals related to Committee and Board decisions.
