Deki, a small Bristol-based charity, is looking for two new trustees. We're driven by a vision of a world of opportunity, not poverty, and our mission is to empower rural communities to build resilience to extreme poverty and climate change.
We're seeking two committed individuals to bring their expertise in Finance and Marketing to our Board. If you have a flair for financial management or marketing strategy, we need your skills to help deliver our impactful programmes, and empower the communities we work with.
About Deki:
Working in partnership with IADES and communities in Togo, we have developed a holistic approach through our five scalable programmes, tackling some of the key causes of poverty and ensuring long-lasting, sustainable change.
Focusing on supporting rural livelihoods, increasing economic inclusion, raising awareness of gender equality, and empowering female entrepreneurs, our programmes are supported by tailor-made training, and are designed to increase access to financial support, affordable healthcare, clean cookstoves and safe drinking water for tens of thousands of people.
The Role:
As a trustee, you'll ensure good governance of the charity, and that Deki's strategies and operations align with our mission. You'll provide invaluable guidance to our CEO, shape long-term goals, and oversee critical decisions that drive sustainable change.
Our trustees are committed to our vision and mission. Despite facing the challenges of many charities working in international development over the past few years, Deki has succeeded in growing both the scale and impact of our partnership programmes.
The current time commitment is as follows:

Board Meetings: 4 times a year, remotely via Zoom.

Annual Strategy Meeting: A full day of in-person collaboration in Bristol.

Committee/Advisory Group Meetings: Up to 4 times a year, scheduled for your convenience.
The Board is currently composed of 6 trustees with a wide range of experience and expertise. The Finance role will support our Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee and work closely with the CEO on financial targets and progress in achieving them. Our new Marketing focused trustee will Chair the Business Development Advisory Group and support the CEO in delivering our Business Development Strategy.

Trustee – Fundraising Representative

The Trustee Role
As a registered charity, our governance and overall leadership rests with our Board of Trustees, who work alongside the Chief Executive and Director team. While membership of the Board is voluntary, and without remuneration (reasonable expenses are paid) it is a highly rewarding experience where Trustees contribute actively, and take significant responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of our organisation. Those already in this role find it extremely fulfilling and are a vital part of the Marwell family. With exciting times ahead, we are looking to complement our existing Board of Trustees with a suitably experienced and highly qualified Fundraising professional. In addition to the generic responsibilities and skills required of Board members, Marwell requires someone who can demonstrate extensive charitable fundraising expertise, at a Director or Chief Executive level. Ideally, they will have relevant experience of fundraising governance, major giving and large-scale capital appeals. This role, like many Board appointments, is non-executive but critical in our overall governance, leadership and understanding of best practice.
Main Duties

• To champion fundraising at Board level.
• To work with the Board, CEO, Directors and senior leadership to embed a culture of fundraising throughout the organisation.
• To provide strategic overview and advise the Board on fundraising governance, compliance and regulation, in support of the senior management team.
• To actively harness the energy and contacts of all trustees to support fundraising initiatives, through appropriate use of their networks, sources and their presence at fundraising and other events.
• To support the fundraising team, as appropriate, on fundraising strategy and activities.
• To support the creation of and take a leading role in a new ‘Development Board’
General
• Participate in supporting and regularly reviewing the strategic aims and operational progress of the organisation.
• Ensure, alongside fellow Trustees, that the policies and practices of the organisation are in keeping with its overall aims and objectives.
• Ensure, alongside fellow Trustees, that the organisation functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
• Consider the organisation as a whole and its beneficiaries, whether as a member of the Board or any of its sub-committees.
• Reflect the organisation’s vision and principles, strategy and major policies at all times.
• Adhere to the Code of Conduct at all times, particularly when exercising the functions of the Trustee, or any of its sub-committees or groups.
• Attend Board meetings and sub-committee meetings where appropriate.
• Be an active member of the Trustee body in exercising its responsibilities and functions.
• Maintain good relations with senior managerial employees.
• Take part in training sessions provided for the benefit of Trustees.
• Fulfil such other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Trustee body.

Main duties and responsibilities
In addition to fulfilling the duties of a trustee, the Treasurer will maintain an overview of the organisation’s financial affairs in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements. The Treasurer will ensure that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.
Key tasks
- Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts, financial statements and financial reports to the Board after discussion with the CEO and other senior staff
- In conjunction with the CEO and Finance Manager to plan the annual cycle of financial reporting to the Board and (where appropriate) to sub-committees and to set the agendas for the finance component of meetings.
- Advising the Board on the financial implications of strategic and business plans.
- Providing assurance to the Board that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs, and recommending corrective action where this is not the case.
- Lead work on the development and implementation of financial policies, including reserves and (where appropriate) investment
- Ensuring equipment and assets are adequately maintained and insured
- Liaising with the charity’s auditors and advising the Board on the appointment or re-appointment of auditors
- Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way
- Liaising with the company secretary and director of finance and resources to ensure that the charities annual accounts are compliant with the current Charities SORP
- Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
The Treasurer also Chairs the finance and fundraising sub-group. FFSG is a principal group of the Staying Put board. Its principal objective is to assist the board to fulfil their functions by providing timely advice on areas within its remit. It is responsible for reviewing and overseeing the management and strategy of all finance and fundraising matters of the Staying Put group and includes the areas of audit and organisational risk.
Skills, abilities and personal qualities required
- Demonstrate relevant experience in financial management, preferably with a recognised accounting qualification.
- Ability communicate financial matters to non-financial colleagues so that all Trustees are able to fully understand the organisation’s finances, review options and make informed choices.
- Ability to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Analytical ability and good independent judgement and strategic thinking which ensures continual improvement and may challenge the status quo.
- A willingness to speak their mind and engage in open debate while working effectively as part of a team
- To be honest and objective in their scrutiny of the organisation, seeking to ensure that the quality of service to clients remains paramount at all times.
- Understanding and acceptance of the role of a Board for a charitable organisation (including the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship) and of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer.
- A commitment to the organisation and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the role.
- A capacity to understand and empathise with the issues of concern for CAB.

In broad terms, the five key responsibilities for Staying Put board members are:

Purpose
The purpose of the Board of Trustees is to manage the strategic affairs of RCUK. Charity trustees share ultimate responsibility for governing a charity and directing how it is managed and run. Trustees may exercise all the powers of the organisation to carry out this duty.
Role
The Board of Trustees is responsible for:
- providing the strategic steer for the organisation
- approving the strategic plan
- overseeing and guaranteeing the financial affairs of the organisation
- supporting the CEO and senior leadership team to manage the day to day affairs of the organisation
- providing the strategic steer to the Executive Committee and Subcommittees in order that these groups can continue to develop their areas of expertise
- the continuing development of the Executive Committee and Subcommittees
- supporting the work of the Executive Committee and Subcommittees to meet the charity objects
- delegating responsibility to the Executive Committee and Subcommittees for updating and implementing guidelines and the publication of appropriate materials
- delegating responsibility to the Subcommittees to undertake such projects that meet the charity objects
- Identifying and promoting external relationships to help to further RCUK’s strategic aims
Membership
There are four Trustees who are elected by Members. These Elected Trustees are the President, Vice President, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary.
There will be up to three Trustees who are appointed by the Elected Trustees. These trustees will be appointed for their particular expertise according to identified need.
Conflict of Interest
All Trustees will be required to declare any conflict of interest (COI) and comply with the RCUK COI Policy.
Frequency of meetings
Meetings will be held approximately four times a year and are presently held by video conferencing. Two of these meetings will include reports from the auditor and the investment portfolio managers. There is also usually a strategic planning away day held with trustees and the SLT. This meeting is usually held in person in our office in central London.
Quorum
The quorum for the formal Trustee meetings will comprise three Trustees with two being elected Trustees. No decision shall be taken at a Trustee meeting unless quorate at the time when the decision is taken. Decisions at a Trustee meeting will be decided by a majority of those eligible to vote. In the case of an equality of votes, the Chair shall have the casting vote.

Since the temporary closure of our venue due to fire and water damage, we have been working hard to continue our mission with our 'out and about' activity as well as focussing on reimagining our strategic plan (Plan 2030) and governance.
We are now on the cusp of reopening our iconic Bristol venue, and as we do, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to our strategy and help us create a place where everyone is included, curious and inspired by science.

What is a trustee?
Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as:
Directors, board members, governors, committee members
Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who work with our experienced leadership team to provide support, encouragement, challenge when needed and help to decide how the charity is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

What will you do in this role?
As a trustee you will provide advice, knowledge and support to the leadership team at We The Curious.
With the steer of the Chair, the board of trustees ensures we pursue our purpose responsibly, are compliant with our governing documents, charity law and other relevant legislation. The board will review and advise on best practice and appropriate policies and procedures and uphold excellent governance.
As a trustee you will:

All Trustees should use their specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach informed decisions in the best interest of We The Curious.
This will involve scrutinising Board papers, leading discussion and providing guidance as requested by the Board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of our work in which the trustee has expertise.
Time commitment
_We hold quarterly board meetings, typically from 4pm to 7pm and one strategy away day per year. Trustees are expected to attend and contribute to all meetings either in person or by joining virtually.
_ Board Meetings are located at the We The Curious offices within the science centre in central Bristol, and once a year at another location around the City.
_ You will also be asked to take part in one of our subcommittee meetings which take place online, at least once per quarter. There are currently sub-committees for Finance & Risk Assurance and Purpose Strategy.
_ You may also be called upon for advice or assistance by the leadership team or to attend occasional events.
Remuneration
This is a voluntary role. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered. Food is provided at the quarterly Board meetings and strategy away days.

_Trustees are appointed to an initial three-year term of service (including a 12-month probationary period).
_Trustees can serve a maximum of six years with a reappointment after the first term of three years unless the trustee holds an office, such as Chair or Deputy Chair, in which case they would be eligible for a further three-year term. The maximum term of office is nine years.

I’ve never been a trustee before, should I apply?
Yes! If you feel you connect with these values or have some the skills/knowledge we are looking for, then we’d love to hear from you.
You just need to be at least 18 years old. You don’t need formal qualifications, or previous trustee experience or a science background or have reached any stage in your career. We’ll give you training on good governance and opportunities for mentorship. This opportunity would suit someone who is new to governance or hasn’t been a trustee before.

Training
If you join the board, you will have an induction and onboarding experience to support you with your role and get you connected with the rest of the organisation.
If you are a first-time trustee or want a refresher, we will provide you with training on good governance and other topics related to your role. We will also provide you with mentorship from other members of the board.

Role context
The Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians, based in the UK and works internationally, is a collaborative partnership between the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians of London.
The Federation is seeking to appoint representatives to their Specialty Advisory Committees.
Purpose and scope
Lay involvement in the management and organisation of our work is essential. Lay representatives act as a ‘critical friend’, contribute experience from outside the professional group, and provide an external, non-medical perspective to the decision making process. They provide input into the external quality assurance of the examinations delivery, support the officers of their board or committee in delivering examinations and meeting the requirements set by the General Medical Council (GMC). Successful applicants will become full members of the respective boards and committees and will actively participate in their work and projects. We are seeking lay representatives for various Specialist Advisory Committees (SACs) and Management and Policy (MaP) Boards. Please note that the format of meetings may be conducted in-person, hybrid or entirely remotely.
Federation lay representatives are non-salaried positions although applicants should note all reasonable expenses and travel costs will be reimbursed in line with the expenses policy.
The Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) improves patient care by setting and maintaining standards for the highest quality of physician training in the UK.
JRCPTB is responsible for:
- The production of specialty curricula, including workplace based assessments, for 32 medical specialties and 2 subspecialties, as well as Internal Medicine Training (IMT)
- Providing external advice to Deaneries on quality management of training in different locations as part of the General Medical Council’s Quality Framework
- Recording and monitoring trainees’ progress and making recommendations for the award of specialty certification
- External stakeholder management through the work of Speciality Advisory Committees
- International Development activities.
Lay representatives for JRCPTB can be non- health care professionals with an interest in medical training who have the ability to represent the interests of the lay public to consultant physicians.
CPD Management and Policy Board:
- The CPD Management and Policy Board are accountable to the Senior Leadership team (SLT), and through them to the Federation Board.
MRCP(UK) are responsible for:
- Developing and delivering postgraduate medical examinations around the world on behalf of the three Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK.

About St Basils
We are an organisation helping between 16 - 25 year olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We provide accommodation and support to help them get back into education or training so they can learn to live independently.
We have numerous accommodations across the Midlands where we house the young people coming in to access our services. There are Support Workers on site to assist and guide the young people. They help with applying for benefits, finding employment, getting back into education and all of their other needs.
What will you be doing?
As a registered provider of social housing, St Basils is required (in accordance with the Regulator of Social Housing’s Regulatory Framework) to adopt and comply with an appropriate Code of Governance. St Basils has adopted the sector specific NHF Code of Governance 2020. An annual statement of compliance in respect of the Governance Code is published in the Annual Report and Financial Statements.
St Basils is governed by a Board of Directors. St Basils also has the following Committees, which have delegated functions to support good governance and effective oversight.
· Business Support and Audit Committee
· Service Delivery and Development Committee
· Nominations Committee
This role will support our Business Support and Audit Committee.
St Basils is a registered charity. All Board Members are also Trustees and will be registered as such with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. We are also a Company limited by guarantee; as such St Basils Directors are required to comply with any requirements within the provisions of the Companies Act 2006.
As a member of St Basils’ Board, you will be a guardian of St Basils’ charitable purpose. You will be responsible for holding the Senior Leadership Team to account through constructive challenge and for ensuring St Basils’ strategic priorities are met. You will form part of St Basils’ good governance function which involves having an oversight of key business areas, such as safeguarding, risk, finance, health and safety, EDI and business development. What difference will you make?
As a Director / Trustee of the Board and a member of the Business Support & Audit Committe, you will be responsible for overseeing the finances of the organisation, reviewing internal and external audit work, and holding the Senior Leadership Team accountable for implementing the recommendations from these audits. The Committee is also responsible for reviewing St Basils’ Risk Register and ensuring it is effectively monitored.
We adopt a co-regulatory approach to governance by establishing a strong working relationship between Board members and service users and developing our governance arrangements with them. We encourage Board members to visit services to support their strategic decision making. We have a Youth Advisory Board and have previous Youth Board Members on our main Board. Young people have developed 12 Youth Standards and we are held accountable through our governance systems for adherence to those standards.
Our operating environment is often challenging. As a charity, we operate within narrow financial margins. St Basils is also a registered provider of social housing with the Regulator of Social Housing. Unlike other registered providers, St Basils relies on charitable income to achieve its outcomes. Building successful partnerships and relationships with stakeholders at all levels: locally, regionally and nationally is critical to our success.

Are you ready to make a meaningful impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in poverty? We are seeking three passionate individuals to serve as trustees and contribute their skills and expertise to our cause.
Action on Poverty is a small dynamic international development organisation working in Sierra Leone, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to address barriers to safe and lasting work. We are working to break the cycle of poverty and inequality. Our programmes are particularly focused on supporting women, young people and people with disabilities. We have a small UK staff team of 6, who now mostly work remotely. We pride ourselves on keeping lean so that most of our funds go out to our overseas partners who can apply them where they are most needed.
Who we need: We are looking to augment our Board of six trustees with up to three more who have the skills and expertise for the roles indicated below, attending Trustees’ Meetings three to four times a year (held via Zoom) and assisting with ad-hoc issues in-between times related to their skill area. We see these roles as a strategic lead, providing oversight and a sounding board to the relevant staff and the CEO. These are voluntary (unpaid) positions.
For our organisational strengthening, creativity and problem solving we are keen to recruit people from different perspectives and experiences which diversity brings and we aim to build a culture where everyone feels heard, respected and valued. Mental Health Resource is a well-established, independent charity based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Our aim is to improve mental wellbeing in our community by enabling people to feel supported and valued, providing opportunities for social connections and by raising awareness of mental health. We deliver high quality and effective services across West Kent providing safe spaces and person-centred mental health support.
We provide comprehensive services with both a focus on short term and long-term mental health support, enabling people to access our projects for as longs as they want or need support. Our beneficiaries have complex and enduring mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, self-harming, psychosis, schizophrenia and bi-polar and, on average, we work with over 900 adults and young people each year.
About the Trustee roles
You would be working with other trustees who have different skills, knowledge and experience. It's an interesting role in which you can help formulate ideas about how we as an organisation can best address the challenges and opportunities that exist in an increasingly complex and changing environment.
We would love to hear from you if you have a true interest in helping to improve the lives of those with mental health conditions in our community, and especially if you have skills or experience in the delivery or commissioning of mental health services or legal skills. No experience of being a trustee is necessary.
You would be expected to attend and participate in six Board meetings per year which are held via Teams/Zoom and last 2-3 hrs.
