BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Emmanuel is one of the Colleges that make up the collegiate structure of the University of Cambridge. We provide a community-focused environment for learning, living and working in peaceful and beautiful grounds situated in the centre of the City. The College was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay and has been a centre of outstanding learning ever since. It currently has around 700 students (undergraduate and postgraduate), 90 Fellows (who teach and research at the College) and 180 staff. We welcome people into the Emma community from across the globe, of many different backgrounds, with many different experiences.

The Development Office supports the college in its charitable purpose by building and maintaining a supportive, lifelong, two-way relationship with Members (alumni), and engaging the community of members and friends to contribute their time, expertise and philanthropy. Between 2015 and 2022, the Development Office raised £38m in new philanthropic income through the Emma enables campaign. This was the college’s most successful campaign ever and saw a significant uplift in philanthropy across major, regular, and legacy giving. We are looking now to build on this momentum as we plan the next campaign.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITES

The post-holder’s principal objective is to manage the successful development and delivery of the College’s regular giving programme, using multi-channel approaches to increase the value and number of members (alumni) and friends who give, to build on this sustainable annual source of philanthropic income.

Fundraising

• Manage and develop a successful regular giving programme, taking initiative to plan and organise an annual cycle of activity to ensure all contactable members are solicited for a gift once a year, maximising donor retention.
• Manage and deliver the annual telephone campaign, including working with consultants, preparing data, drafting letters, recruiting students, training and call-room management.
• Organise mass and tailored annual appeals (both digital and postal) to members.
• Achieve annual targets for increasing the percentage and number of members and friends who give, set in collaboration with the Head of Development.
• Move prospects through the gift cycle and up the giving ladder in a timely manner.
• Identify and refer regular or longstanding donors with potentially greater capacity to other fundraisers as appropriate.

Communications

• Contact donors whose pledges are due to expire to encourage renewals and upgrades.
• Prepare thank you letters ensuring that donors to the regular giving programme are thanked promptly and appropriately.
• Confidently engage with the college community – including students and Fellows – to gain an understanding of the need for philanthropic support.
• Write compelling fundraising copy for mass appeals.
• Work with the Engagement Manager to contribute to the production of stewardship materials.

Analysis and Innovation 

• Analyse the performance and effectiveness of solicitations and mailings, identifying trends, testing solutions, sourcing additional related information where appropriate.
• Analyse sector benchmarking data to provide strategic insight into the comparative performance of the College’s regular giving programme.
• Develop a strong knowledge of sector best practice through networking, benchmarking, identifying and undertaking training and development opportunities and, where appropriate, implement these best practices.
• Research and identify new opportunities, thinking creatively to develop unique appeals.
• Develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues across the Collegiate University, attending working groups, training opportunities and the annual development conference where appropriate.

General Administration

• Ensure that data is recorded accurately and concisely on the Raiser’s Edge database.
• Maintain a high level of confidentiality in the maintenance of personal and financial records and ensure compliance at all times with Data Protection legislation.
• Have expert knowledge and understanding of current legislation impacting upon regular giving and stewardship, marketing and operations, such as gift aid, General Data Protection Regulations and fundraising regulation, and ensure operational compliance.
• Represent and promote the Development Office within college and externally, attending occasional member events where appropriate.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Development team and across the college in delivering the overall Development Strategy.
• Any other duties reasonably required of the Regular Giving Officer.
• Manage own workload, undertaking planning, agreeing priorities and timescales to meet schedules and deadlines in an effective and efficient manner.

There will occasionally be the requirement to work additional hours during peak periods, but this will be sufficiently planned in advance with time off in lieu.

Our centre for service delivery is the Toc H Community Centre in Eveswell, Newport, where our offer includes our popular Stay and Play sessions for low-income families, and children’s after-school club Active Juniors. Our activities and services are incredibly popular, and we hold longstanding partnerships with local agencies and stakeholders. 

It is an exciting period of growth for Toc H Newport, with a number of new funding streams making it possible for us to reach many more families in need across Newport in 2025 and beyond. This includes a £300,000 grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Community Ownership Fund, allowing us to soon complete a full structural and interior renovation of our facilities.  Following a Community Asset Transfer, our space will soon triple in size, meaning we can offer more activities and services to more local people. The role

This is a fantastic opportunity to utilise your educational skills, in a natural environment, whilst engaging young people,  as well as our local communities.  You will have a background and passion for teaching and engaging a range of audiences, to learn about the importance of our rivers, together with the ecosystems that survive and thrive around them.  You will have a hands on approach, with the ability to design, develop and deliver a range of educational activities to suit your varying audiences.  You will enjoy having time working independently to create your teaching sessions, either in an office environment or at home, as well as being outside, delivering your teaching or activities.

Whilst you will predominately cover the Surrey catchment area, you will be happy and flexible to work anywhere within the south east, together with some degree of flexibility with the hours that you work, so that events can be held on occasional evenings and weekends.  Your time will be spent at home developing your sessions, delivering a range of activities such as guided walks or talks, as well as hands on activities in and around a river, or educational events.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Impact and Evaluation expert to join our growing team. The role involves managing a portfolio of VCSE clients and providing comprehensive support to their monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) needs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of MEL methodologies, data collection techniques, data analysis, report writing, stakeholder engagement, and a passion for improving social outcomes through evidence-based evaluation.

Charity Fundraising Ltd provides a comprehensive range of fundraising, strategic consultancy and evaluation services to Charities and other not-for-profit organisations. Established in 2000, Project and Programme Evaluation and MEL support has grown to become a core component of our service offer. We work with lots of amazing charities, both local and national, small and large, across the UK, covering themes such as: Homelessness; addiction; youth; community; disability; mental health; minoritised groups; medical conditions; heritage; environment and more.

Main Duties:                                                               

• Managing a portfolio of VCSE and public sector clients and coordinating projects with colleagues, client staff members and trustees.
• Conducting comprehensive external project and programme evaluations for clients.
• Developing and implementing monitoring and evaluation frameworks at project, programme and  organisational level.
• Develop impact reports that clearly communicate organisational outcomes and impact
• Collaborating with client staff and trustees to understand and address their evaluation needs.
• Analysing and reporting on project outcomes and impacts, utilising data analysis techniques to identify patterns, trends, and insights from evaluation findings.
• Plan and lead M&E workshops and training events with clients.
• Collaborating closely with line managers and colleagues to ensure high-quality service delivery.
• Supporting our fundraising clients to enhance their monitoring and impact reporting systems and processes and using monitoring data to feed into project / programme design and development
• Support clients and colleagues to develop consultation tools and undertake consultation with service users, partners and other stakeholders
• Participating in the promotion of the company’s services, including responding to client enquiries, discussing needs and developing proposals
• Research and identify new business opportunities and work with colleagues to develop
• General administrative duties, including maintaining records in line with our Quality Management System (QMS).
• Other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualities / Skills / Experience:

• A successful track record of undertaking voluntary sector project / programme evaluations and developing M&E frameworks.
• Experience of designing and developing monitoring frameworks / tools and undertaking quantitative and qualitative primary research
• Research and analysis skills such as literature review and secondary data analysis
• Ability to chart and visually communicate data and findings in effective and compelling ways
• A team player with a confident manner and a professional, flexible, positive and studious approach to the work.
• A passion for supporting the voluntary sector in the UK to better achieve it’s aims
• Experience in key social issues within the UK
• An ability to quickly develop a detailed understanding of wide ranging and complex topics.
• A high standard of written English with an ability to produce concise and persuasive prose.
• High level computer literacy, for word processing, graphic report layout design,  data analysis, record keeping, and web-based research.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
