The Research Manager – Grant funding will work closely with members of the Research Funding team and is responsible for delivering and supporting the charity’s grant-making activities across the full funding lifecycle—from application and peer review to post-award monitoring. This role is vital in advancing ARUK's research objectives and promoting engagement within with ARUK-funded research community. They will be working collaboratively with the wider Research directorate and with other teams, including the Science Communications team and Philanthropy teams.  

This role sits in the Research Directorate, an ambitious, supportive and friendly team that funds the best research to transform the lives of people affected by all forms of dementia.  We’re looking for someone with research management experience and a good eye for detail who is excited by the opportunities in the dementia research landscape. 

Main duties and responsibilities of the role:

Grants Programme Management

· Lead the operational delivery of grants review and management, from launch to funding decisions.

· Support the Senior Research Manager to develop the Grant Review Board, sub-panels and expert review processes, to support future growth in funding and ensure robust fair assessment of application, in line with AMRC principles.

· Support the Research Contracts Manager with the execution of contractual agreements with research organisations, and post-award management including monitoring research expenditure and post-award change requests.

· Be a Subject Matter Expert for the grants management system and maintain accurate grant records and ensure internal and external stakeholders have access to accurate data.

· Champion the implementation of the new Grants Management system across the organisation.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

· Act as a primary contact for applicants, reviewers, and grant holders.

· Support researchers with guidance throughout the application and award process.

· Work closely with internal teams (e.g. Fundraising, Science Communications) to coordinate grant-related activities and support effective communication of grant information to stakeholders

· Help promote funding opportunities to the research community.

· Represent the charity at relevant external meetings and events.

Management Responsibilities

· Line management of a Research Officer and a Research Executive, effectively delegating work to support delivery of their objectives 

· Working with the Senior Research Manager to help promote an inspiring team culture where personal development is prioritised 

What we are looking for:

· Degree in a life science, health-related, or relevant discipline.

· Experience in research funding or grant management, ideally in the charity or academic sector.

· Familiarity with the UK medical research landscape and funding processes.

· Knowledge of Grants Management system (e.g. Grant Tracker)

· Strong project management and organisational skills.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Additional Information:

Ways of working: As part of our Agile ways of working you will be required to work approximately 2 days a week from the office, which is subject to the requirements of the role and the business needs. Flexibility on where you work can be split between working from home and our office.

About you:

We are looking for a confident fundraiser who thrives on developing new opportunities and is self-motivated and pro-active.

We would like you to have at least three years’ experience in fundraising with corporates and/or trusts and foundations, or have demonstrable transferable skills, particularly around networking/new business and writing proposals. As Finance and Operations Officer, you will report to the Operations and Systems Manager and act as the go-to person for day-to-day queries around finance, HR, IT, and office operations.

This is a varied and hands-on role, ideal for someone who enjoys multi-tasking and problem-solving, and is looking to grow their career in charity operations, finance, or HR.

Key Responsibilities:

Finance:

• Maintain day-to-day bookkeeping using Xero (invoicing, coding, bank reconciliation)

• Prepare and issue contracts and invoices

• Lead on credit control and payment runs

• Support payroll and tutor payment reconciliation

• Assist with monthly management accounts and financial reporting

HR and Policies:

• Keep staff policies and the Employee Handbook up to date

As our Professional Lead for Nursing Workforce Research, you’ll make a critical contribution to the Workforce Academy’s programme of research, informing national debate, RCN policy, and advocacy. Your work will help to tackle vital issues such as staffing levels, workforce planning, recruitment and retention, and the health and wellbeing of the nursing workforce.

You’ll work closely with policy leaders, academic partners, and external stakeholders across health, education, and government to ensure our research is timely, relevant, and influential.

We will demonstrate the value of nurse staffing to achieving nursing excellence and identify means of ensuring care is a safe and positive experience for both staff and patients.

You’ll have a PhD in a relevant discipline, with expertise in mixed methods and / or quantitative methodology and excellent knowledge and understanding of workforce research, data analysis, evidence synthesis and philosophy of social science.

You will bring extensive experience of designing and conducting programmes of research, alongside knowledge mobilisation expertise.

You’ll have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to translate complex theory and data to diverse audiences.

Context and purpose of the role

You will join a small, high-performing team responsible for generating £5 million per year from individual giving, legacies, grants and corporate partners, all to deliver the Ramblers ambition for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of walking in nature.

Working closely with the Product & Innovation Manager, you will play a key role in delivering the fundraising strategy, leading on the delivery of our individual giving and legacy marketing campaigns across a range of channels. You will create high-quality, compelling campaign materials and ensure an excellent donor experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Income generation

• Play a key role in the implementation and delivery of the individual giving and legacy marketing strategy
• Support the growth of individual giving income in line with annual targets
• Develop and deliver regular cash and legacy marketing appeals to a high level, including:
  • Developing propositions and cases for support
  • Create compelling direct marketing materials, including writing persuasive copy and developing strong creative content
  • Project management to ensure delivery on schedule and within budget
  • Managing relationships with agencies and suppliers including design and print
• Manage a portfolio of affiliate fundraising campaigns

Donor stewardship

• Ensure the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system is used effectively to facilitate accurate supporter stewardship and reporting
• Effectively manage communications with supporters, including ensuring that donations are thanked appropriately, managing fundraising inboxes, and responding to queries
• Working with the Production & Innovation Manager, identify a pipeline of potential mid- and high-value donors for stewardship and conversion

Data and reporting

• Produce campaign and programme level reporting and analysis
• Work closely with the data team to ensure selections are accurate, timely and relevant to our various audiences, and use income data to make recommendations for future campaigns
• Maintain accurate, up to date and compliant records of individual giving campaigns and appeals
• Provide regular financial reports and reforecasts to the Product & Innovation Manager and Head of Fundraising

Relationships

• Build strong working relationships with staff within various functions of the Ramblers
• Work with other members of the Fundraising, Communications and Supporter Care teams to ensure that all supporter communications are part of an integrated supporter journey

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

• Experience working within a target-driven fundraising or direct marketing team, ideally within an individual giving context
• Experience of managing fundraising or marketing projects across a range of channels, such as direct mail, social media and email
• Experience of data-driven marketing campaigns, including segmentation and campaign analysis to meet objectives
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor communications to a wide range of audiences
• Excellent creative skills, including the ability to write compelling, accurate and persuasive copy across a range of channels
