Apprentice Personal Assistant - Executive Director of Finance and Strategic Planning

Contract: 18 Months Fixed Term contract, full time, Level 3 Apprentice

Salary: £24,113 - £25,319 with excellent benefits

Hybrid Working: A minimum of 40% of working time is spent face to face, either in the London office or as a result of external engagement or travel for WaterAid. WaterAid is located at Canary Wharf, London, and this will be your location and contract base.

About the Team:
The WaterAid Finance and Strategic Planning team is a diverse and friendly team always ready to help each other and support WaterAid teams to deliver their aims and the contribute to the WaterAid mission.

About the Role:
The Apprentice PA will provide efficient and professional administrative and secretarial support to the Director of Finance and IT. The PA will provide support to the Director, in the following areas:

• Efficient coordination and support for the Director and the teams in both finance and IT.
• Assistance with the coordination for the Director of Finance and IT in their cross organisational and federation responsibilities, including Directors Team, Global Executive, Global Finance Executive, Audit Committee and Board of Trustees where necessary

You'll also:

• Act as business assistant and support for the Director, and their teams
• Proactively prioritise Director's time, forward planning of workload, travel arrangements, and diary management.
• Act with the Director's delegated authority whilst sensitively recognising and respecting the accountability and authority of others present.
• Proactively coordinate UK, and global, meetings where required
• Attend SMT meetings to take notes of the meetings, record and manage the completion the actions/priorities that arise
• Maintain relationships with key stakeholders across WaterAid.
• Provide cover for other PAs during annual leave, absence etc. (as part of the PA Team).
• Provide assistance with the inputting of the Director's expenses - budget allocation etc
• Assist with the Travel arrangements for the Director and the team.
• Pro-active, high attention to detail and pride in all outputs.
• Track priorities, flagging issues to Director, and proactively coordinating such items across SMT and other key stakeholders, to ensure timely actions are taken and issues dealt.
• Carry out research and prepare materials including presentations and written briefings as required.
• Maintain up to date secure and accessible team records (e.g. organigrams, JDs, etc)
• Commit to and complete apprenticeship training and development programme

Apprenticeship Requirements

• Have an A-C grade at GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English
• Have lived continuously in the UK/EEA for the last 3 years
• Not have a degree in any subject
• Not have done the Business Administration Level 3 programme previously
• Not have significant work experience of more than a year or so

Assignments would suit experienced qualified audit professionals with grant audit / management experience, ideally in a not-for-profit/ international development context

Role overview.

Complete international grant expenditure audits for a diverse range of projects (grant recipients) funded by international donor institutions ranging from emergency aid, to long term development in areas such as agriculture, health or infrastructure or technical research. Assignments are 1-3 weeks in length and based across the European mainland and the developing world. These are offered on an assignment by assignment basis, one to two months in advance.

Contractors can be based outside the UK 

Requirements

• Qualified ACA / ACCA or equivalent – 5+ years post qualified experience
• Grant management and audit and reporting experience with international institutions. Preference given to individuals that have worked on UN or EC grant assurance assignments
• Diplomacy and cultural sensitivity while working with a hugely diverse range of clients and beneficiaries
• A real interest in international development and associated funding structures
• Ideally but not essential fluency in a second language such as Spanish, German, French, Arabic & Portugese
• Excellent communication, report writing and presentation skills in English.

The Role

- further develop Reall’s monitoring, evaluation and learning systems and processes, capturing and analysing data from across Reall’s programmes and activities

- build on Reall’s body of evidence on the affordable housing sector, supporting the identification of research, data and evidence gaps and implementing individual research and evidence projects

- share knowledge through developing blog posts, case studies and in-depth external reports, and supporting the continuous improvement of Reall’s Data Dashboard

- work with external organisations to explore opportunities, share learning and strengthen Reall’s visibility and reputation

You will have the following skills, knowledge, and experience:

• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Experience in project monitoring and evaluation and/or research

Salary – £28,000 - £36,000 per annum dependent on experience

Working hours – Normal office hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. We are open to flexible working patterns subject to the objectives and outcomes of the role being met. We are currently working hybrid with blended office and homeworking with the ability to work up to three days from home.

Call for Expression of Interest: Consultancy for Assessment on Access to Financial Services for Young Women with Disabilities - GESP.

Project Background

In 2019, Nigeria signed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, to prioritise disability rights by stakeholders and duty-bearers. The Act also led to the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, aimed at preventing discrimination against people with disabilities and to ensure disability inclusiveness across all sectors. However, policy implementation has been a challenge due to weak law enforcement, inadequate funding, negative attitudes towards disability and a lack of data on disability.

According to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics labour force survey, there are close to five million unemployed people in Lagos and Kano States, representing 36.4% of the active labour force. Development Initiative's analysis of the 2012-13 Household Survey shows that women with disabilities are 43% more likely to be out of employment relative to women without disability. The high cost of living and level of inequality in the country contributes significantly to the adversity faced by people with disabilities, particularly women.

The Girls Educational Skills Programme (GESP) is design to address the barriers of including women with disabilities into the Nigerian Labour Force. The project seeks to build the employment readiness and confidence of young women with disabilities (ages 18-24) to secure jobs or run their own micro/small businesses. The project will also empower adolescent girls with disabilities in senior secondary schools (ages 13-18) to widen their career aspirations through skills development and mentoring.

Sightsavers is working with two organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) to deliver on these objectives. These OPDs are Project Enable Africa and Kanawa Educational Foundation for the Disabled. Some private sector partners are also keying into the GESP project to ensure its success, these partners include Unilever Nigeria, Guinness Nigeria, Access Bank, and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

Consultancy objective

1. Identify institutional, physical, attitudinal and communication barriers hindering people with disabilities, particularly young women with disabilities, from accessing wide range of financial services.
2. Conduct analysis of existing legal framework including the National Financial Inclusion Policy and strategy; National Sustainability Banking Principles, among others to identify gaps and means in which they could be strengthened.
3. Propose short and long-term implementable solutions that could enable the project to advocate for policy reforms and influence relevant stakeholders in the financial institution sector.
4. In addition, identify the relevant technical capacity needed by both the demand and supply actors in implementing the policy reforms proposed to enable the project achieve its financial inclusion objective.
