The Associate Director of Policy & External Affairs is a highly influential role within the College as you will help advance our influencing activities to shape paediatric care, support the paediatric workforce and improve child health outcomes in the UK.
As Associate Director of Policy & External Affairs, you will take responsibility for developing policy and external affairs activity that builds the College’s reputation amongst its key audiences, including decision-makers in governments, parliaments, the NHS and other policy makers and shapers. You will also lead on the College’s four-nation policy and external affairs strategies, working with relevant teams, committees and working groups in line with the annual operational plan.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Membership, Policy & External Affairs, you will provide senior strategic direction and operational leadership for three reporting teams, setting a high standard of work outcomes and a proactive and supportive work culture.
Leading cross-functional collaboration, you will work with other divisions to align the College’s influencing and communications activities to ensure the positive impact of our offering is actively communicated to our key stakeholders.
Educated to degree level or with equivalent professional experience, you should have a proven understanding of the structures and working of the Westminster government and the devolved administrations, along with health and social care organisations and local authorities. You will be an adept communications professional skilled at maintaining organisational reputation and landing key messages in the external environment.
With an in-depth understanding and experience of the political context in which policy decisions are made, your political astuteness and judgement in influencing policymakers and other stakeholders, will ensure you can achieve effective advocacy.
You should have exceptional experience and understanding of the national and international policy architecture, the policy environment and the networks within it. You should also have demonstrable experience of developing and delivering high-impact integrated campaigns.
Excellent liaison and consultation skills and the ability to persuade at a senior level in all sectors, including with politicians and senior executives, along with significant experience of proactive and reactive media handling are essential.
Significant management experience along with a background of leading multi-disciplinary teams and operational planning in a high-stakes area, are also essential. Membership of an appropriate professional body – e.g. CIPR – would be desirable.
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health sets and maintains standards for the education and training of all doctors working in paediatrics and child health in the UK. We advocate on child health issues at home and internationally. Additionally, through a variety of activities, the College influences the quality of medical practice for children in hospital and in the community.
The RCPCH has more than 22,000 members and fellows and employs around 200 staff, most of whom work in our London office in Holborn. We have smaller offices in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

About You

The YWF Youth Voice Coordinator Role

- Ensure these strategies and communication channels are youth-focussed, inclusive and accessible.
YWF Youth Engagement Strategy Development & Coordination
- Help develop and coordinate YWF's youth engagement and youth voice initiatives including engaging the Young Ambassadors in a YWF engagement program, workshops, internships, trusteeships, panels, peer-research, grant-making, member visits etc.
- Ensure young people are supported to engage in outward-facing opportunities - events, social media, co-production, member visits.
- Work with the youth voice consultant, young people and key stakeholders to help further develop practices that promote youth empowerment, both within the organisation, the membership and the borough.
- Support internal pathways for the Young Ambassadors into YWF Internships and external pathways into supported paid opportunities within the borough e.g. research, youth consultancy etc.

- Work closely with the Marketing & Engagement Manager to communicate the voices and work of young people within YWF through various social media platforms - including supporting young people to gather content.
Internship Oversight
- Support and coordinate YWF interns - providing guidance, mentorship and direction to ensure effective program implementation - working to integrate and support interns within different areas of the team.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including young people, members, staff, volunteers and partner organisations to share best practices, support collaboration and drive forward impactful strategies.
Project Management
- Ensure clear documentation, processes, and policies are in place to support the efficiency and effectiveness of YWF youth engagement initiatives, including supporting the Youth Voice Consultant to develop role descriptions, session plans, and risk assessments and safeguarding.
Grant Making
- Support the Grants Manager in delivering a youth-led grants programme, led by a group of young grant makers

We’re looking for a Research Manager who combines exceptional ability in research and report-writing, with a real passion for (and experience in) peacebuilding. About this key role
Our successful candidate will be embedded in the trauma team, working closely with clinicians and hospital staff to provide support for those young people admitted to the Major Trauma Centre right through to their discharge back into the community, including access to appropriate longer-term support. You will be expected to identify and provide a comprehensive and holistic assessment, advice, referral and support service to young victims of violence people, exploring innovative and effective ways of supporting them which will reduce their risk of re-victimisation.
You will produce support and risk management plans based on your assessments, promoting inter-agency collaboration in the assessment and planning process, and develop and maintain relationships with partner agencies. We will also count on you to deliver a holistic support service, working solo or with colleagues as the situation dictates, providing a practical service that will include social and housing support, accompanying to appointments, benefits work, debt advice, liaising with utilities, appearing in court, and cleaning.
What we are looking for
You will be passionate about support and uplifting Children and Young people and want to make a difference within the community for the betterment of Children and Young People. You’ll also have an understanding of the challenges that are faced by some CYP and be relatable. You’ll need:
- Personal experience of the criminal justice system, lived experience of the issues facing this client group and/or experience of working with ‘high risk’, vulnerable children, young people and/or families
- Substantial experience of providing support, advice and advocacy
- Substantial experience of supporting CYP and assessing the needs of children and young people who at risk of significant harm
- An understanding of how trauma impacts on a young person and what that can look like
- A relevant qualification to a good standard or be working towards one
- A knowledge of relevant services for young people and their families in the service provision area
- Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Do you have experience working with families and children aged 0-13, a good understanding of the needs of vulnerable families and a relevant vocational or academic qualification?

General Duties:
1. To promote the programmes of work and manage the external and internal referral process including the assessment of need, risk and safeguarding concerns.
2. Hold a caseload of 4 families delivering “whole family” or targeted interventions.
3. Lead and facilitate community group work programmes including 6 #CapeAbility in Schools programme which aims to build resilience and self-esteem for children in key stage 2.
4. Lead and facilitate groupwork programmes for parents such Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities and Child Overcoming Domestic Abuse.
5. Safeguard the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults you work with directly and take appropriate action if escalation is needed.
6. To provide practical and emotional support to families or advocacy and signposting to specialist and universal services where appropriate.
7. Ensuring that the voices and views of children and young people are sought, heard and represented appropriately.

We are seeking to appoint someone on a 12-month fixed term contract as maternity cover, to join our Grants Team in delivering The Ideas Fund, an exciting programme which looks to connect communities with researchers in order to develop and try out ideas related to mental wellbeing. The main responsibilities of this role are to:
