Job Purpose

The Head of Retail will provide strategic leadership and expert insight to review, strengthen and evolve Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s retail operation during a six-month period of strategic development.

Working closely with the Director of Operations & People, the postholder will undertake a comprehensive review of the charity’s retail portfolio, identifying opportunities to maximise income, improve operational effectiveness and enhance supporter engagement.

The role will assess the current retail model, including shop performance, operational structures, processes and growth opportunities, and develop clear recommendations and a practical roadmap for the future development of retail income at Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

This is a highly collaborative role requiring strong commercial insight, charity retail expertise and the ability to translate analysis into actionable plans that will support the charity’s long-term income growth and sustainability.

Main Duties / Tasks

Strategic Review and Development

• Lead a comprehensive strategic review of Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s retail operations, including shop performance, operational structure, systems and processes

• Assess the current retail model to identify opportunities for income growth, efficiency improvements and enhanced supporter engagement

• Benchmark retail performance against charity sector best practice and comparable retail operations

• Develop strategic recommendations and a clear roadmap to strengthen long-term sustainability and growth

Retail Performance and Commercial Insight

• Analyse financial performance, sales data, stock flow and operational costs across the retail portfolio

• Identify opportunities to improve profitability, operational efficiency and customer experience

• Review pricing, merchandising, stock management and donation processes to optimise retail income

• Provide clear insights and reporting to inform strategic decision-making by the senior leadership team

Operational Improvement

• Review existing retail processes, structures and ways of working to identify improvements

• Introduce practical operational improvements during the contract period where appropriate

• Ensure compliance with best practice in Gift Aid, health and safety and charity retail standards

Future Growth Opportunities

• Identify opportunities for growth, innovation or diversification, including new retail formats or channels

• Assess opportunities to strengthen community engagement and donation generation

• Support development of a longer-term retail strategy aligned to wider income generation ambitions

Leadership and Collaboration

• Provide leadership and support to the retail team, fostering a positive and collaborative culture

• Work closely with fundraising, marketing and operations teams to integrate retail into wider strategy

• Build strong relationships with volunteers, supporters and key stakeholders

Reporting and Strategic Recommendations

• Provide regular updates to senior leadership on findings, opportunities and progress

• Deliver a final strategic report with key findings, recommendations and a clear action plan

• Act as an ambassador for Alder Hey Children’s Charity in line with organisational values

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

• Significant experience in retail leadership, ideally within a multi-site or charity retail environment

• Proven experience delivering retail strategies that drive income growth

• Experience managing budgets and financial performance

• Experience leading and developing teams, including volunteers

• Strong understanding of retail operations (stock, merchandising, customer experience)

• Experience analysing performance data to inform decision-making

• Experience working within charity retail

Desirable:

• Experience reviewing or transforming retail operations

We’re looking for a Community Coordinator to take ownership of a group of WeSwim clubs, playing a central role in building and supporting a thriving, connected community around them. 

This is a role for someone who is excellent at relationship building and enjoys being at the heart of things. You’ll work closely with disabled swimmers, volunteers and our pool partners to create a welcoming, inclusive and seamless experience from first contact through to regular participation. 

You’ll coordinate sessions, support swimmers into the water, build strong local relationships, and help clubs grow through outreach and community engagement. 

Alongside keeping things running smoothly, you’ll be out in the community, getting to know people, spotting opportunities, and supporting volunteers and swimmers to take part in ways that feel meaningful to them. 

You’ll enjoy juggling multiple priorities, achieving targets, and supporting the growth of a  small, mission-driven organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Club operations & coordination: Coordinate weekly swim sessions across your allocated clubs, making sure sessions run smoothly. Act as the main point of contact for swimmers, volunteers, committees and pool partners, building strong relationships and resolving day-to-day issues. Regularly visit clubs to get to know volunteers and swimmers, understand how sessions are running, and identify any issues or opportunities.

• Swimmer journey & membership: Manage the swimmer journey from application through to first session and ongoing participation. Monitor attendance and engagement and meet recruitment and attendance targets ensuring a balanced flow of swimmers.

• Swimmer recruitment & outreach: Build relationships with local organisations to raise awareness of WeSwim and support referrals. Deliver outreach activity to maintain a steady flow of new swimmers into clubs and waiting lists. Support the setup and launch of new WeSwim clubs by building local awareness and supporting swimmer recruitment, working closely with the wider team.

• Volunteer engagement & club presence: Build strong relationships with volunteers, ensuring they feel welcomed, valued and supported. Support volunteer with regular communications and work closely with the wider team to improve volunteer experience.

• Systems & administration: Maintain accurate club records including membership data and attendance logs. Monitor attendance and impact data to support reporting. Use and improve systems and processes to support efficient coordination and growth.

• Community participation & engagement: Support volunteers, swimmers and supporters to organise and lead their own activities and initiatives (e.g. events, challenges, social activities). Create simple accessible resources that support people to take part and contribute. Be the main point of contact for people who want to get more involved in WeSwim.

Skills & Experience:

Volunteering and Foster Caring Manager is a new role at Mayhew, reflective of the importance of volunteering and foster caring in our ability to deliver our onward strategy and direction. This is a highly visible and important role for Mayhew. The postholder will be working across all teams with staff and volunteers, supporters, partners and members of the public.

This role requires an effective leader and manager, with practical subject matter expertise in volunteering good practice, strong organisational skills, and a drive, rooted in passion for both animal welfare and volunteering, to enable Mayhew to reach many more dogs and cats and pet owners who need us by cultivating a thriving, engaged and diverse volunteer base.

Staff and volunteers at Mayhew, particularly in animal facing and public facing roles have duties that can be physically and emotionally demanding, sometimes interfacing with dogs and cats and pet owners who are in distress and facing heart-breaking situations. We’re looking for a talented Challenge Events Fundraiser to join our team in delivering our ambitious events strategy. This role is vital as we continue to develop incredible relationships with new and existing supporters helping them to network, influence and fundraise via challenge events. 

Through excellent supporter care and stewardship, the Challenge Events Fundraiser is required to increase income for our challenge events portfolio. Working with the Challenge Events Manager, the post holder will deliver the events strategy as well as contribute to its ongoing development.

To succeed in this role you’ll need to:
• Develop and grow networks of event supporters, volunteers and community organisations to increase participation in fundraising events and generate sustainable income for the charity.
• Deliver an effective supporter journey, providing high-quality stewardship which motivates and enables supporters to complete successful fundraising activities within their communities.
• Support the delivery of the charity’s event fundraising strategy, working closely with the Challenge Events Manager to achieve agreed income targets.
• Plan, coordinate and evaluate key challenge events within the fundraising calendar (e.g. Abseil, London Marathon, Great Birmingham Run), ensuring successful delivery and supporter experience.
• Act as a visible ambassador for the charity’s events programme, building and maintaining strong relationships with supporters, community groups and partners.
• Ensure all fundraising activity is delivered in line with relevant legislation, including UK charity law and Fundraising Regulator guidance.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the charity and wider organisation, providing support and cover where required to ensure the effective delivery of fundraising activities.
• Work with internal teams to develop and deliver engaging fundraising products and events, ensuring effective donor stewardship and supporter engagement.
• Monitor performance against agreed targets, identifying opportunities and potential risks and provide regular income and KPI reports.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date supporter records, including the use of Salesforce and contribute to the development of effective internal processe

We are looking for an Interim Head of Events to manage our existing events portfolio as maternity cover. You will be responsible for managing a range of well-established, high profile events including our flagship Annual Dinner which raises over £1.6M and is critical to our donor engagement, retention and income. You will ensure all our events run successfully, are organised to the highest standards and delivered with immaculate care and precision. You will manage a small team of two, providing guidance and support where needed. You will also work closely with our Marketing and Communications team to develop content and marketing for events.

You will join our Fundraising team, which is made up of 11 individuals working across a range of portfolios, including: trusts and foundations, institutional funding, major donor fundraising, individual giving and legacies, online matched funding campaigns, events, donor acquisition and engagement.   

You should have:

• Significant experience and a proven track record of event planning, coordination and delivery to an exceptionally high standard, within the non-profit sector.
• Experience of managing a small team
• Experience of managing budgets
• Experience working alongside Chairs, Trustees and/or Event Committees
• Exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate to a wide range of stakeholders.
• Ability to multitask, managing numerous priorities at the same time, to tight deadlines
• The ability to use your own initiative and to work under pressure. 
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues at all levels and with senior volunteers

Working as part of the NNS team, you will be on the ground in Ladywood mapping local assets, building partnerships, identifying gaps in provision, and championing co-production and citizen voice. You will directly support Birmingham City Council's prevention-first approach to adult social care. Your focus will be on adults aged 18-49 living with long-term disabilities, ensuring they can access community-based support and lead happy, healthy and independent lives.

Alongside this, you will support local organisations through small grant applications and the wider capacity-building programme, whilst representing NNS across community events, steering groups and citywide forums, as detailed in the job description.
