Community Engagement Volunteer Volunteer Roles

Refugees are people and not victims, and this is a weird job ad not a normal one. 

In Second Tree, people have always grown in the team, building skills within the organisation. It was like this when we started as four volunteers, and it is now that we are a team of 20-25 – many having been here for years – managing several projects in refugee camps in Greece and training institutions and organisations in more than 20 countries.

BUT we have been awarded the project that we’ve always dreamed of. In it we have put all our ideas on how to change the humanitarian world and refugee reception systems (yes: a very unambitious project!). So, we thought: we will need more people, with a large array of skills; people who share our objective and ethical commitment and, maybe, feel unhappy with what they are doing now?

We can offer an enormous amount of work (but for something really meaningful) for a very small salary (but the same as the CEO and all of top management).

So, if you are a disillusioned humanitarian, who is looking for a place that really cares; or you work in another sector and want to start helping, this might be for you.

YOU

We are looking for someone who has:

• Intelligence: You have changed your mind and made someone else change their mind, through rational conversations, at least once in the last two weeks.

• Honesty: There is nothing you wouldn't say, except the things you say you wouldn't say. If you mess up, you say so. If someone else messes up, you say so too.

• Engagement: When you read the Wikipedia entry for Aumann's Agreement Theorem you get excited. You don’t want to “be yourself”, and you will try to improve us.

• Ethical drive: You have decided (no matter how recently) that it’s not about what you’re good at or what you like to do, but about what is right to do.

• Sense of humour: You are ruthless. You are fine with offending and being offended.

US

Second Tree was founded by a group of volunteers working together in one of the worst refugee camps in Europe. Some lived in the camp, some did not. From the beginning, we realised that making such a distinction – even with good intentions – “othered”, victimised, refugees. At the time we didn’t know that this was called community engagement, we just knew that we were building a community. 

More than 8 years later. Second Tree has kept the same ethos, and has turned it into a community engagement model, a policy, and a package of training programmes for local authorities, international institutions and civil society organisations. 

We still work in the refugee camps in Greece, our root and innovation lab, where we keep learning and develop new ideas. But now we also advocate – through writing, public speaking and advocacy – for a humanitarian world and a reception system that doesn’t see refugees as victims.

Ultimately, spreading this philosophy is what Second Tree has specialised in: having trained international institutions, local public authorities and civil society organisations in more than 20 countries. It is also the basis of the Project we are recruiting for.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The community engagement model that we have developed is called simply “Refugees Are People”, or RAP. Because, too often, in the humanitarian world and in the receptions system in Europe, refugees are not perceived and treated as people, but as victims. 

People that you need to protect, because of their vulnerability, or celebrate because of their heroism, or avoid upsetting because of the culture there are trapped into. This depiction is often used by NGOs, activists, academia, and individuals to foster support, highlight injustice and counter anti-refugee sentiment. However, despite being well-intentioned, it undermines and disempower refugees in a similar way to how opposite form of “othering” (perceiving refugees as invaders, thieves, etc) do. 

At Second Tree, we put significant effort into countering these victimising sentiments. It’s not easy. We all carry biases within us, and committing to this belief requires constant discussion and self-reflection.  We don’t assume people’s trauma, heroism or culture, and therefore we don’t patronise, romanticise or stereotype. Instead, we view everyone, refugees and non-refugees alike, with CARE: as Capable, Accountable, Reasonable, in one word, Equal. 

It means engaging intellectually, disagreeing, joking with refugees as you would with other people, and holding them to the same standards – not lower, not higher – as anyone else. This, the practicing of joint responsibility and the same high expectations for everyone involved, is how Second Tree has managed to build strong communities. 

THE PROJECT

We’ve put into this project all of the things we’ve always wanted to do. And now that it’s has been approved, we have to do those amazing things! It is the continuation, but with a significant expansion in both scope and depth, of a previous project, co-funded by the European Commission. We are leading a consortium of 17 partners, plus 7 associated partners, in 11 countries, 7 municipalities, and 4 academic institutions across a 3-year timeline. 

Our community building training will provide the foundation for the creation of integration task forces in 12 territories in Europe, being the instrument through which municipalities gain relationships of trust with migrant communities. A community monitoring system developed for OSCE by a professor in our network will be implemented in the territories as a sustainability tool for the Task Forces.

There’s another component that is very exciting: the Transnational Research. One of the important features of our model is that we develop relationships with people and maintain them even after they leave Greece. We have a huge number of friends and Second Tree friends and former students scattered across many different countries. Each of these people has seen and been able to compare the integration systems of at least two European countries, knowledge that is completely untapped by States and European institutions. 40 of them will be hired as refugee co-researchers, and will be trained by the universities in the project to interview the others. They will then analyse the data, collect that knowledge into a working paper, and present the results of their action research. By the project’s conclusion, this network of 200 refugees will be formalised into a refugee-led association in Brussels, using the findings of their research to drive advocacy and lobbying efforts for policy change at EU level.

We're recruiting up to 3 new Trustees to lead Sing Inside through the next stages of our development.

Role purpose: to bring vision and leadership to the charity, provide good governance and review our performance against our strategic objectives within the charity’s mission, vision and values and charitable objects.

Reporting to: Chair of trustees

Location: Remote, but attendance of prison visits is encouraged. Board meetings happen largely online, with hopefully more in-person meetings in the future (expenses covered).

Time Commitment: Quarterly board meetings for approximately 2 hours, preparation time reading papers and responding to emails. Other time commitments by agreement e.g. committees, working groups etc.

Remuneration: Voluntary role. Reasonable expenses and training as agreed.

Terms of Office: 3 year term, maximum 2 x terms served (6 years total).

About Sing Inside

Sing Inside provides group singing workshops in prisons across England and Wales, bringing local volunteers together with people in prison to form community choirs. We enable all participants to enjoy singing with others free from judgement or assessment, inspiring hope and confidence, and facilitating connection to others. We train confident, inspiring community music leaders who deliver engaging, accessible singing sessions. We prioritise enjoyment in our approach to increase confidence, promote teamwork and encourage participants to recognise their individual contribution to a shared goal. 

Sing Inside began as a grassroots student volunteering project, registering as a CIO in March 2019. We have grown to work nationally, with our Trustees and small staff team overseeing three established local committees of volunteers in Cambridge, Oxford and York, as well as other work across the country. Local committees support the staff team to organise visits in their area, tailoring our approach to local community needs and interests and effectively recruit volunteers and boost engagement. Our local volunteer committees are supported and trained by staff to create a strong network of prison partnerships under the Sing Inside umbrella. 

Where are we now?

ollowing Covid-19 restrictions stopping Sing Inside’s work entirely in prisons, we have rebuilt our relationships and our understanding of how the prison environment and need for our work has changed.

Staff Team

Until 2023, we were entirely volunteer-led. We then made the decision to instate a part-time Chief Executive role as a salaried post, to put the charity on a more sustainable and balanced footing. We then recruited a Programme Manager to oversee existing work with committees and visits. At the start of 2024, our first Chief Executive, one of the founding volunteer members of Sing Inside, stepped away and we recruited a new Chief Executive to help lead Sing Inside into its next stage of development. We are supported by a freelance bid writer and a variety of volunteers providing advice and guidance.

Trustees

Two of our founding Trustees when we registered as a CIO are reaching the end of their second terms in June 2024, as well as several Trustees stepping away at the end of their first terms due to changing personal circumstances. We are delighted that two other founding volunteer members have become Trustees which leaves us in a good position of retaining historical information and expertise combined with new Trustees and skills we wish to recruit.

What We Need

We are looking for up to 3 new Trustees to join 4 other Trustees, making a Board of up to 7. Following a Spring 2024 skills audit, we have identified a need for the following skills and experience on our Board: strategic and change management, finance, marketing, grant fundraising, community fundraising, HR, lived experience of prison environment.

Position Overview

As a Marketing and Communication Volunteer at Listen to Act you will play a vital role in promoting our charitable initiatives and increasing awareness of our mission within the community. You will utilise your skills in marketing and communication to engage stakeholders, raise visibility, and amplify the impact of our projects aimed at improving community services.

Key Responsibilities

· Content Creation: Develop engaging and compelling content for various marketing channels, including social media, website, newsletters, and promotional materials.

· Social Media Management: Manage and grow our social media presence by creating and scheduling posts, responding to comments, and monitoring analytics to optimise performance.

· Campaign Development: Assist in the planning, execution, and evaluation of marketing campaigns to promote specific projects, events, or fundraising initiatives.

· Graphic Design: Create visually appealing graphics, infographics, and other visual assets to support marketing materials and communication efforts.

· Public Relations: Cultivate relationships with media outlets, draft press releases, and pitch stories to secure media coverage for Listen to Act and its activities

· Community Engagement: Engage with our supporters, volunteers, and partner organisations through online and offline channels to foster a sense of community and belonging.

· Collaboration: Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to align marketing efforts with organizational goals and priorities.

 Qualifications and Skills

Passion for community service and a commitment to the mission and values of Listen to Act

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and compelling manner.

Creativity and innovation in developing marketing strategies and content that resonate with diverse audiences.

Proficiency in social media platforms, content management systems, and basic graphic design tools.

Experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or related fields is desirable but not essential.

Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with team members from diverse backgrounds.

Time Commitment

This is a flexible volunteer position, with an estimated time commitment of 8 hours per week. Some evening and weekend availability may be required to accommodate events or campaigns. This can be discussed at interview to ensure all parties are comfortable with the level of commitment

About the role

Do you love creating engaging content and connecting with people? Rethink Mental Illness is looking for Social Media Volunteers who can bring our online community to life!

Our social media volunteers use their passion and knowledge of social media to promote the activities of our local services and groups in Central England though various channels, for example, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.

Working closely with our services managers, you will be based at our office in Ripley at the Croft with some occasional travel for events (expenses reimbursed), and ideally will be able to commit up to 4 hours per week to volunteering.

You will receive training and regular supervision to ensure you feel confident in your role.  This role is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer.

What you will be doing as a Social Media Volunteer

• Help to co-ordinate our Quarterly newsletters and content schedule
• Work with other volunteers and Service Managers to capture events, meeting updates, good news stories
• Support the creation of fun and captivating email and newsletters
• Creating regular engaging content across all our social media platforms including, story posts, blogs, articles, multimedia content.
• Monitoring activity, analytics and engagement with content

What will make you a great fit for this role?

• An eye for fun and engaging content, with ability to think creatively when sharing content
• A strong writer – must have a good voice online, relatable to our target audience and in line with our brand identity and tone of voice
• Good written communication skills, with accuracy and good attention to detail.
