Community Researcher Volunteer Roles
Why am I needed?
Community is at the heart of everything that we do at Tenovus Cancer Care to help those affected by cancer. Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help value our interesting donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.
What will I be doing?
Researching interesting items online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop
Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed
Working together with the shop team to identify and price high value items
Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries
Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.
What skills do I need?
It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in vintage items, know what to look out for with brands, pottery marks, book publishing dates etc.
A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation
Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.
Ability to use computer for research
Whist this role will be mainly sitting at a computer desk, you may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.
How much time do I need to commit?
We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form.
What support will I be given?
Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.
Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

- Carrying out research and reviews of existing international documents and research papers relevant to HealthProm international and UK work
- Providing administrative support to the Director of Operations, including organising Programme Development Working group meetings and HealthProm Forum events

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
- At least 5 years of experience in senior policy and research management

- Significant senior policy and research development experience, ideally in international development
- Background in policy and stakeholder relations with a good general understanding of the workings of government, parliament and civil service
- Significant experience in developing and implementing policy and research strategies
- A creative and strategic thinker, with the ability to develop innovative policy solutions to complex challenges
- Ability to actively take initiative and help set things up in a start-up environment

Who are we?
Survivors Can Shine is a community interest company working to empower and protect children and young people by providing platforms to celebrate and amplify their voices. Bringing communities together to change perceptions around child abuse and create young Ambassadors for Change.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers for The Ambassadors for Change Community Event, supported by BBC Children in Need, taking place on the iconic Hampstead Heath on Saturday, May 25th. We’ll need volunteers to help make the day a success by helping manage the crowds, supporting the local community, answering any queries, and just generally representing Survivors Can Shine.

Position Overview
Based in Madagascar, this position will work across SEED’s Community Health Department including maternal and child health, SRHR and food security. We use community-led, participatory approaches, working with local communities to identify and implement projects that meet their needs and priorities. It is a superb opportunity for an early career development professional to be part of a team of national and international staff supporting the development, funding, reporting and evaluation of our community health programme.
Primary responsibilities include the writing of donor reports and proposals, providing additional support to the project team surrounding project management and monitoring and evaluation. The role is predominantly office-based with some bush travel. The diversity of activities undertaken will provide a wide-ranging experience for an early career development professional who can effectively and efficiently deal with a comprehensive range of tasks related to the complex world of overseas development.

Probationary Period: Three months
Contract: Voluntary for 12 months, with stipend of 800,000 Ar per month towards accommodation and a contribution of £650 towards insurance
Reporting to: Senior Programme Officer
Duties and Responsibilities
- Write project reports, to a high standard of English, that clearly demonstrate the successes and challenges of our community health projects and provide clear budgetary information
- Compile funding proposals based on past evaluation, team discussion and International best practice in an engaging and professional manner
- Conduct internet searches and searches through SEED’s funder database for potential donors to fund projects
- Take a leading role in gathering statistics and ensure that all existing statistics relating to the projects are accurate
- Work alongside the Communications and Media Officer to build a communications plan for the community health projects, writing regular Facebook, blog posts and website copy
- Support the development of projects that fulfil local need and sit within the aims of SEED taking into account research findings, local needs and constraints, government objectives and SEED’s previous experience
- Conduct research into international best practices with regard to SEED’s community health programme and take the lead in discussing these with the team
- Monitor and update project trackers according to project activities, ensuring the project is on track to meet project indicators and objectives
- Take an active role in project management meetings, leading these where appropriate
- Take an active part in international team meetings and support to other members of the team
- Work with national staff in increasing their skills and capacity, providing mentoring or training where appropriate
- Assist in data collection and basic analysis where required and where there is an Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Specialist in post assist them in developing monitoring and evaluation tools and completing MEL reports for projects
- Work alongside the Head of Project Development and Head of Finance in developing and managing the budgets relating to projects
- Maintain a database of projects and funders alongside the UK and remote team
- Form part of the team representing projects or SEED when required.
- Liaise with the UK team in London ensuring clear communication at all times.
- Ensure all of SEED’s policies and procedures are evident throughout the work of the department, including those for safeguarding, whistleblowing and anticorruption, and undertake continual training to ensure these are promoted at all times
- Complete other ad-hoc tasks as required by the Senior Programme Officer, Head of Community Health Programmes or Director of Operations and Heads of Departments to further the aims and work of the organisation.
Person Specification
● Hold an undergraduate in or relating to community health, general development or have transferable skills or equivalent experience
● Demonstrate strong writing skills. Previous experience in grant-writing is an asset.
● Demonstrate sound knowledge and keen interest in Community Health and its interface with international development
● Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to SEED’s ethos and approach and be a good ambassador for SEED at all times
● Have passion, curiosity and motivation for the job and the ability to enthuse others
● Have the ability and desire to work with teams from different economic and cultural backgrounds and across multiple language barriers

The role: The main responsibilities of your role will include:
- Supporting the grant review process by undertaking peer review of grant applications.
- Advising and supporting the staff team in monitoring funded projects.
- Supporting our strategic goals of funding research, sharing information and creating change.
- Helping to champion FRAME’s mission and charitable purpose.
Estimated hours: Approx. ½ day – 4 days per year. We’ll need your expertise during late April to early May, and late September through October to review grant applications.
Experience desired: We’re looking for panel members with scientific research experience most likely from an industry or academic background. This experience may relate to basic, translational, applied research, or regulatory testing in any area that is, or would benefit from human-relevant methods. This includes areas where laboratory animals have been used historically or are still widely used today but non-animal approaches are now being developed. Our current panel includes experts from such varied fields as bone tissue engineering and metabolomics through to neuropharmacology and ecotoxicology, and we welcome applications from diverse specialisms. The greater the diversity, the better!
Please note: All applicants should hold a PhD and be a named author on at least one published paper in a relevant research area.

It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in vintage items, know what to look out for with brands, pottery marks, book publishing dates etc.
A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation
Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.
Ability to use computer for research
Whist this role will be mainly sitting at a computer desk, you may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.
How much time do I need to commit?
We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form. All we ask is that you give the same hours each week and that you let us know as soon as you can if you’re not able to make it. This’ll help us to plan our week.
What support will I be given?

About CARAS:
Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a charity that supports refugees and people seeking asylum who live in south London. We offer a range of individual and group support to improve the holistic wellbeing of people who have a background of forced migration, providing them with tools to build lives filled with value, meaning and purpose in the UK. Our activities for young people currently include: ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages), study group, youth club, swimming lessons and football.
About Youth Club:
Youth Club is a place for young people aged 14-19 to come and play games, learn new skills, make and strengthen friendships and build a sense of belonging. Regular activities include classic youth club games such as table tennis, pool, foosball, board and card games.
Youth club takes place at Tooting Hub- Beechcroft Road, Tooting, SW17 7BU.
About Sports Programme:
We work in partnership with Fulham Kicks to run a football session every Monday. We provide 1:1 sports advice to help build confidence and remove barriers by supporting young people to plan their journeys and accompanying them to join their first sessions. We find new sessions for young people at youth clubs, gyms and other sports providers. We arrange frequent trips to offer new sports to our young people including: boxing, yoga, trampolining and hopefully to go-karting.
We will also deliver a research project to sports providers, local authorities, support networks and other young people. The project will detail: (1) the accessibility barriers to sports faced by young people, (2) methods of best practice on including young refugees and asylum seekers, (3) funding and support options available from local authorities, and (4) what participatory 1:1 support looks like for young people.
About the role:
As a sports program volunteer, you would be helping young people to travel safely around London, to feel welcome in the city, to join in with sports activities where possible and to inspire young people to take part in sports. You will need to go on group trips to external sports providers and to attend our youth club occasionally. We welcome volunteers with any level of sporting ability, the only thing necessary is to be willing to give some sports a go when it is possible. Please note, some sessions you attend will be only for under 18’s, and so you will not always be allowed to take part, and then your role will only be to accompany. We are very happy to be flexible regarding which sessions you attend according to your interests.
We ask for a commitment of at least 1-2 sports sessions or youth club evenings every month. Our youth club runs every Wednesday from 6.00-8.00pm, the external sports trips will usually be weekday evenings. We are able to be flexible according to your schedule.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- To attend and contribute to volunteer de-briefs which occur after each session/trip.
- Providing feedback of your experience to contribute to the research project.
- To act as a positive role model and set standards of behaviour when volunteering with young people.
- To encourage and inspire young people to reach their full potential.
- To assist young people to both recognise and celebrate their achievements.
- To challenge young peoples’ negative attitudes and behaviour in an appropriate manner.

- To occasionally research local sports providers to find sessions for our young people.
Requirements:
Essential:
To be 18 years or older;
- To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds;

- Current resident of the UK;
- Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check;
- Able to attend compulsory volunteer induction training (online) general and safeguarding prior to the start of role
Volunteer induction training currently takes place online once a month on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 6pm – 8pm. we offer the same trainings on Tuesday and Wednesday daytimes online between 12noon – 2pm once every 3 months.
Your availability to attend 1 general and 1 safeguarding online training session at these times within 3 months of your application would be a prerequisite of being accepted as a volunteer at CARAS.

We are recruiting into a new Lay Advisory Board made up of people with personal experience of living with a brain tumour or a close friend or family member.
- You will work in parallel to our main Scientific Advisory Board, made up of International researchers with expertise in brain tumour biology, oncologists and genetic specialists.

About CARAS :

About CARAS casework:
CARAS works with adults and young people of a refugee and asylum seeker background to find solutions to their problems. There are two separate sub-teams within the Casework team; young people and adults. We support adults to navigate the asylum system, understand their options, access benefits, connect with services and realise their goals. We are a non-specialist casework and advocacy service, so we work in close partnership with other local organisations to whom we refer people with more complex issues.
Using the empowerment model, our casework service embodies CARAS’ values of ‘with not for’, always striving to ensure people are armed with the information and resources they need to make decisions and take action for themselves.
About the Role:
We are currently recruiting for 2 volunteers to join our Adult Casework team.
The purpose of the Adult Casework volunteer role is to support adults with a refugee or asylum seeking background to understand their rights, access information and services, and ultimately, take control of their own lives. You will work with individuals to address problems they may face relating to, among other issues, asylum support, accessing healthcare and education, access to legal advice and finding activities and opportunities.
You will start from an understanding that individuals are always best placed to solve their own problems, and often need nothing more than to talk out a problem and find the solution themselves. When helpful, you will provide information to clarify and support to take action.
The Adult Casework team hold a support session at our office in Tooting on Thursday afternoons from 2-5.30pm. Volunteer caseworkers have 1:1 appointments, either in person or by phone, with CARAS members. These can be related to a range of topics. Currently our biggest areas of work are around housing for people seeking asylum, access to college, nursery/school places for children, referrals to mental health providers, searches and signposting to activities, finding solicitors and supporting people to apply for bus passes and ID cards. Volunteers also support with administrative tasks such as updating our databases, collating resources and creating information guides.
