Family Lives was formed over forty years ago by volunteers with the aim of ensuring that all parents had somewhere to turn before they reach crisis point.
We know that the right support at the right time makes all the difference.
Family Lives provides targeted early intervention and crisis support to families who are struggling.
Purpose of the role:
To be part of a flexible team providing empathic, caring and informed support to families, carers and others who use our services.
Our volunteers take calls from parents and carers on a wide range of subjects, whether that might be issues around separation and divorce, isolation, depression, bullying and abuse, dealing with behavioural problems, etc. You can find out more about our services on our website. We are a national service with home-based call takers county wide and a call centre in Old Hatfield Hertfordshire.
Once trained volunteers sign up for a weekly 4-hour shift comprising 3 hours ‘online’ followed by a debrief session with your supervisor which can last around half to one hour.
We recruit volunteers with a range of backgrounds and experiences though we ask that volunteers have experience of parenting or working with children and young people, are good listeners and have a willingness to learn. Being remote it will be very important that you have a PC/laptop, plug in headset with microphone, good Wi-Fi and a private place to work from home. You need to be a UK resident.
Our volunteers often tell us how rewarding their time with us is.
You'll be part of a compassionate community and feel a real sense of pride for what you do. You'll meet new people, gain valuable experience, and develop your skillset. We're passionate about helping people to reach their full potential, so we'll offer you full training suitable for the role, supervision from a named member of staff, including help setting personal development goals, and opportunities to increase skills and input into practice via regular Practice Development Groups.
Our training programme is excellent and will give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to offer empathic support and guidance to callers whatever their circumstances; all shifts are overseen by a regular shift supervisor who provides ongoing remote support.
We ask our volunteers to make a commitment of 1 year (with time off for holidays), obviously we understand that circumstances sometimes make that an impossibility but can be helpful to know at the outset that is the general expectation.
We have remote call taker training sessions that run over five sessions and is done remotely connecting you via a Microsoft Teams link. Our next training is starting in September 2025.

National Ugly Mugs (NUM) is seeking people with a passion for sex workers’ rights and
safety to join our Board of Trustees.
About NUM and the role of trustees
NUM is a UK-wide charity working with sex workers to end all forms of violence against them. We design and deliver safety tools, carry out research, and provide specialist support services for people in adult industries. We serve sex workers of all genders, ages, abilities, cultures, and modes of work. Our secure digital reporting and alerting system warns communities about dangerous individuals, while our experiential support staff and trained Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs) offer one-to-one, trauma-informed advocacy. We ensure sex workers have the information and resources they need to make informed choices about their lives.
Our wellbeing drop-in service (first launched in Glasgow) has now expanded to Manchester and London, alongside the addition of our dedicated vocational support programme for people looking to transition, diversify, or leave sex work. Our racial justice programme reclaims narratives on sex work and race through in-depth conversations, research, and collaborations between racialised sex workers and anti-racist activists, focusing on experiences across five key areas of public life. We conduct research, deliver education packages for professionals, and advocate for policy change to improve safety, rights, and recognition for sex workers across the UK.
We place lived experience at the heart of all services and decision-making, ensuring our
work reflects the needs, priorities, and expertise of the communities we serve.
Trustees at NUM play a vital role in helping us fulfil our core mission of ending all forms of violence against sex workers. They support NUM as an organisation and the members of the NUM team by providing support, advice and guidance through our day-to-day operations and the overall strategic vision of the charity. Some of that takes place at quarterly trustee meetings, where the CEO reports on NUM’s work and brings decisions and choices to the board for discussion and advice, and some takes place between meetings when individual trustees have skills or experience that can support team members and have the time to take on a supportive or mentoring role. Our current trustees bring with them a wide range of
experience from sex worker organising and advocacy, media and public engagement,
campaigning and social justice, academia, finance, and other aspects of the third sector.
They also oversee legally required duties such as approving the annual report, reviewing
risks and finances, and ensuring the charity complies with the law and meets its charitable
objectives.
Trustee roles are voluntary positions. However, NUM will pay for any reasonable expenses incurred as part of the role.
Who we’re looking for
The most important thing is that you believe in NUM’s work and want to join us to help us
continue this. We need people willing to volunteer their time to shape our practice and our services, and guide the charity as we continue to meet the needs of sex workers across the UK.
We particularly welcome applications from those with:
- Lived experience within sex worker communities

RSBC are looking for volunteers to get involved with our range of online clubs for blind and partially sighted children, young people, and their families.

Commitment: Currently, sessions are run both during the week (mostly in the afternoon) and at weekends (usually on a Saturday). Activity volunteering is a flexible commitment, and you will be able to sign up for the session you like and when you have time. It really is up to you and your availability.

What will I be doing?
Our amazing Activity Volunteers play a key role in supporting blind children and young people to take part in a variety of activities. These range from sports, creative (singing, performing, art), audiobook club and day trips. Our activities are designed for blind young people to meet new friends, gain confidence, learn new skills/sports, and become more independent. The skills you have developed in your career and personal life will be invaluable to our young people.

Who are you?
We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow RSBC’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for RSBC. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of sight problems.

Safeguarding:
Due to the nature of the role, before you can begin volunteering with RSBC there are some required safeguarding checks which will need to be completed.
All RSBC volunteers undergo an Enhanced DBS check (paid for by RSBC) and must provide two references.
All volunteers will also be booked onto safeguarding training.

Are you looking for a new challenge? We are seeking to appoint suitable individuals as Panel Members (known as Associate Hospital Managers - AHMs) to work independently of our Trust and clinical teams who assess and treat people detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA).
If you’re an organised, articulate person with broad life experiences who can work collaboratively, work within specified procedures and is passionate about delivering high quality mental health services, then this rewarding role may be worth considering.
The MHA 1983 sets out procedures under which a detained patient may ask for a review of their detention heard by a panel of three or more AHMs. Written evidence is taken from appropriate doctors, nurses, and social workers; oral evidence is taken from these professionals, from the patient and others as appropriate.
The Trust presents its case for continuing detention under the applicable section of the MHA. The patient may have the support of a legal representative or an advocate. Following review, section 23 of the MHA provides that the Associate Hospital Managers may exercise the power to discharge a patient. Similar procedures are followed in the regular review of detentions, renewals and extensions.
Main duties of the job
- To understand the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) and the MHA 1983 Code of Practice, with particular reference to the role of managers (MHA (1983) Section 2, 3, 37, 20, and 23 and MHA 1983 Code of Practice Chapters 37 and 38). An electronic link to the Code of Practice will be issued on appointment.
- To sit on a panel with two or more other AHMs and conduct a hearing (online and in person)
- To read reports on a patient’s mental state, their social circumstances, and nursing care. These reports will include existing care plans and arrangements for after care. The panel may then interview and question the patient professionals and other family members/carers of the patient at hearings.
- If present, to help the patient explain why they wish to be discharged from detention, sympathetically and openly at hearings.
- To balance information presented and decide whether to exercise the power to discharge. Discharge from detention can only be affected by the unanimous decision of 3 AHMs.
- To confirm the decision for continued detention/continuation of Community Treatment Order (CTO) or discharge the patient.
- To attend relevant meetings and AHM related training as required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
AHMs are independent contractors who work in accordance with the guidance outlined in the Code of Practice to the MHA 1983 to review patients compulsory detention and Community Treatment Orders against statutory criteria. The Code of Practice to the MHA 1983 specifically states that AHMs cannot be employees of the organisation and are not recruited through the Oxford Health Volunteer Programme.
You will be expected to attend at least two hearings per month either via Teams or in person at one of our hospital sites. You will be reimbursed for travel expenses and an attendance fee of £50 is payable per hearing. You will be provided with a Trust laptop to carry out AHM duties.

Here at Youth4Youth, we have grown a strong, tight-knit community of individuals who are passionate about making a difference and improving the lives of young people across the UK. - Develop a volunteer experience strategy that improves engagement and the overall volunteering experience of all involved with Youth4Youth
Overall objectives and responsibilities:
- Lead a team of volunteers who are involved in supporting a positive volunteering experience with the charity
- Develop and execute a volunteer experience strategy that seeks to attract, engage and retain high-quality volunteers into all teams across the charity
- Partner effectively with the broader charity leadership team to understand engagement challenges and implement solutions to close engagement gaps
- Report to the CEO and the Board of Trustees on any strategic progress made around improving volunteer engagement
