Job description

The Role: Fundraising Lead Trustee

Brightside is seeking a Fundraising Lead Trustee to join its Board and provide strategic guidance on income generation. This individual will act as a critical friend to the organisation—offering insight, challenge, and support to help shape and strengthen Brightside’s fundraising approach.

While the operational delivery of fundraising is managed by the staff team, the Fundraising Lead Trustee will play a pivotal role in advising on strategy and enhancing Brightside’s ability to grow income from corporate partnerships, trusts and foundations, and individual donors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Fundraising Oversight
Support the development of a sustainable fundraising strategy aligned with Brightside’s mission and objectives. Chair the Fundraising Sub-Committee.

  • Critical Friend to Leadership
Offer constructive challenge and strategic insight to the leadership team on fundraising initiatives and income development.

  • Governance & Compliance
Ensure fundraising activities comply with ethical standards and legal requirements, and reflect best practice in charity governance.

  • Collaboration with Board & Staff
Work closely with fellow trustees and the fundraising staff team to build organisational fundraising capacity.

  • Leverage Networks
Where appropriate, use personal and professional connections to support introductions to potential funders, partners, or supporters.

  • Monitor & Evaluate
Assist the board in evaluating the effectiveness and impact of fundraising efforts, ensuring they align with the charity’s long-term goals.

Candidate Profile

Brightside is seeking a strategic leader who brings:

  • Proven experience in fundraising, income generation, or business development, particularly in corporate giving, trusts and foundations, philanthropy, or digital fundraising.

  • A solid understanding of fundraising governance and sector best practices.

  • The ability to contribute strategically, rather than operationally.

  • A strong commitment to social mobility and a passion for supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • The skills to act as a supportive and effective critical friend to the leadership team.

  • A willingness to participate actively in board discussions and contribute to the ongoing development of Brightside’s fundraising strategy.
