Our Mission

Brain tumours do not discriminate, and they do not respect boundaries. They can strike anyone, at any age. And they strike quickly.

The Scottish Steering Committee (SSC) is our voluntary group who drive policy, campaigning and influencing work in Scotland, with the support of The Charity. It aims to represent the views of the community in Scotland and be a solution orientated advisory board to help achieve agreed objectives.

An ambitious and dedicated group, members previously agreed that the key objective of the Committee would be to campaign for a faster diagnosis for those affected by a brain tumour. Their aim is to achieve this through influencing, supporting and campaigning to improve all aspects of the diagnostic journey. Two years after setting this objective, as per the Committee’s terms of reference, we are now seeking new members to join and advocate for change in Scotland.

How can you help?

To achieve these ambitions – the Committee is now seeking five new members with particular experiences and skill sets that can help drive and enable the Committee to achieve its ambitions.

Your experience and skills will provide valuable input during SSC meetings but won’t be limited to just that – you can actively engage with stakeholders across Scotland and the wider UK, contribute to the creation of our policy positions in Scotland and raise the voice of the community across Scotland and beyond.

What impact will you have?

You will be a core member of a group that is seeking to improve outcomes for all those affected by brain tumours in Scotland.

We’re looking for...

People with experiences, knowledge and skills that can actively contribute to the operation of the SSC. This includes but is not limited to:

• Experience of being personally affected by a brain tumour in Scotland

• Clinician who is involved with brain tumours in some capacity

• Experience of working within Scottish Public Affairs or within a Commercial Landscape and environment

• Experience of working within Public Relations or media management

However, all applications will be considered, and we seek to have as varied a skillset as possible with a range of different experiences to have as much representation across Scotland as possible.

We particularly encourage applications from those who are significantly underrepresented in our sector, including individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

What can you gain from volunteering?

• You’ll have the opportunity to utilise your existing skills, while developing and learning new ones to take forward into the future

• You will be a part of a group who are seeking to positively influence change in Scotland.

Time commitment

The Committee currently holds 90 minute virtual meetings every six weeks. There will also be opportunities to take on additional tasks which can arise at different moments and depending on the activities of the Committee. We will also aim to meet in person at least once a year at an agreed location.

Practical considerations

You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction from one of the team, who will be your key contact. We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18. We encourage volunteers to claim for any reasonable expenses that are incurred in the course of their volunteering with the Charity. The Deadline for applications is Monday 30 June at 5pm but we may close early if we receive a high number of applications.

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

We are currently inviting applications for qualified honorary counsellors/psychotherapists and student counsellors/psychotherapy trainees to join our counselling team. Kingston Bereavement Support provide free one-to-one counselling on a short-term basis of ten sessions to adults who have been bereaved.

We are looking for candidates who have had at least one year’s clinical experience, and/or have extensive experience in a hospital, hospice or bereavement service, and have acquired a minimum of 50 clinical hours.

Training on bereavement counselling will be provided, and we offer a diverse ongoing CPD training programme. This covers things like working with complex clients, substance abuse and working with clients bereaved by suicide.

Kingston Bereavement Support is primarily a face-to-face service to best support the local community. Supervision for our counsellors is free of charge and provided fortnightly.

About the Role

We are looking for a volunteer with knowledge of nutrition to support our in-person wellbeing and mental health activities. You will help us integrate simple, culturally sensitive nutrition advice into our support services, and share practical knowledge with our service users.

Key Responsibilities

Offer guidance on healthy eating habits and culturally appropriate nutrition
Support staff in developing easy-to-understand resources (leaflets, workshops, etc.)
Provide informal advice to clients during wellbeing sessions
Assist in the planning of nutrition-themed events or activities
Collaborate with our team to ensure accessibility and inclusivity

What We’re Looking For

Studies or background in nutrition, dietetics, public health or a related field
Friendly, approachable, and confident working with diverse groups
Understanding of the barriers faced by disabled and migrant communities
Available to volunteer in-person during weekday hours (flexible schedule)

As a Volunteer Education Mentor, you'll join a dynamic team to deliver 8 mentoring sessions over 8 weeks aimed at building group rapport and covering essential topics like communication, goal setting and problem solving. These sessions will be with a consistent group of young people, ensuring you can build meaningful connections and see their progress over time. 

You'll be supported throughout this process by a King's Trust Youth Development Lead, who will provide guidance and resources to help you succeed.

The sessions will typically last 1 hour and will take place face-to-face in a secondary school environment. The frequency and timing of these sessions will be determined by the school, and you will choose a school that fits your availability, as your consistent attendance is crucial.

An educational background is not required, but a genuine interest in engaging with and developing the skills of young people is essential. Session content will be provided, and you will be expected to develop and review the plans each week. Key skills required include preparation, organisation and reliability. 

Full training will be provided to ensure you feel confident and prepared, please be expected to commit to 2 hours in person training, as well as some virtual training.

A bit more information about this role and the team

• This is a flexible role. The amount of time you offer can work to your availability and convenience.
• There may be opportunities for your activities to be fully remote and/or admin based if you'd prefer.
• You will need your own transport if you wish to attend events, ideally a car or van since items, stock and equipment will usually be needed.
• We ask that you complete training to support you in your role. This can be completed online if you have access to the internet and the necessary device (computer/laptop/tablet etc). Support can be offered or paper versions of much of the training if needed.

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

The wellbeing of our people is important and at Cats Protection we are committed to safeguarding children, adults at risk and all those that we come into contact with as part of our activities.
