The Student Publication Association (SPA) is recruiting charity trustees to assist its work in advancing the education of student journalists across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

About The Role

Skin Gourmet makes raw, handmade, edible skincare from wild Ghanaian ingredients—empowering African producers to earn 300% more by cutting out middlemen and keeping the value where it belongs.
The global skincare industry, valued at over $24.5 billion, thrives on raw materials sourced from Africa—particularly ingredients like shea butter, baobab, and black soap. However, African producers, especially rural women, remain trapped in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.10 a day. Despite being the backbone of the industry, they are systemically excluded from accessing high-value markets due to the high cost of certifications such as Fair Trade and Organic, which range from $2,000 to $70,000 annually. For women earning less than $400 per year, these certifications are entirely out of reach.
Skin Gourmet solves these challenges by creating a radically transparent and locally-rooted skincare model that centers African producers as the rightful beneficiaries of their resources. We source wild, raw ingredients directly from rural communities in Ghana and transform them into handmade, edible skincare products—processed locally to retain full market value. By eliminating middlemen, we ensure producers are paid directly and fairly, increasing their earnings by up to 300%. Instead of exporting raw materials at undervalued prices, we keep processing in-country, turning Ghanaian farmers into suppliers of high-value finished goods.
Our refill system will save up to 15,000 units of packaging waste annually by 2026. Better Pathways is a Birmingham based mental health charity that has been delivering support to people with mental health issues, learning disabilities and other neurodiverse conditions for over 60 years. We support our beneficiaries to build back and maintain good mental health and wellbeing, to access services in the community and to move into paid employment, education, training and volunteering opportunities. We do this through a Vocational Pathways Programme delivered in our social enterprises onsite in Digbeth, and through statutory sector contracts delivered in the community.
We are a relatively small charity, with a current turnover that hovers around the £1m, but with big ambitions to grow. Our agenda is broad and complex, and we are looking for Trustees with the right experience to provide advice, guidance and practical support to help us achieve our aims.
Mental Health Professional Advisor
We have recently recruited a counsellor and psychotherapist into our team and want to build on this, innovating our mental health offer for the future. For example, we are having initial discussions with a key industry about the potential to provide mental health support/counselling services for their large workforce. As we start to concentrate on new product development, especially in our Signage and Woodwork enterprises, but seek to consolidate our existing offers at the same time, expertise in how best to reach the right markets would be a much welcomed addition to our trustee skillset.
Construction/Facilities
We own our building. We love it, but it leaks when it rains, is difficult and expensive to heat and maintain. We have ambitious plans to ‘Raise the Roof’ (ie, build a new one), to build in a mezzanine floor to create capacity for growth, and to remodel our front of house. We are working with a team to produce Stage 2a design plans for submission to planning and then will be raising funds and exploring options to work with constructors. In the UK, our focus is on public sector food. Through our School Plates programme, we support major school caterers in their transition to healthier and more sustainable school menus. Since its launch in 2018, we’ve supported over 90 major school caterers, responsible for the food in over 8,000 schools, feeding over 1.3 million children every day, helping almost 50 million school meals become meat-free or plant-based. We plan to launch a sister programme in the healthcare sector, Hospital Plates, later this year.

Meetings
The Board aims to hold around four Board Meetings per year (generally 1.5 hours per meeting, although subject to change, as necessary). Meetings are usually held virtually, although we now aim to hold one in-person meeting per year, and it is expected that Board Members read the necessary board materials prior to each meeting.
Board positions carry no remuneration but travel and other out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. In return for your contribution, we offer the chance to work with and on behalf of people who are passionate in their commitment to our Mission and are constantly inspiring in their energy and creativity to achieve positive change.
The Role of the Board
In line with ProVeg International's Mission, Vision and Guiding Principles, the ProVeg C.I.C. Board is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of ProVeg in the UK, and monitoring delivery by the Director and their staff. The Board members of ProVeg C.I.C play a critical role in acting as a check and balance for the organisation, giving strategic direction, and acting as a sounding board for strategy and priorities as required. Board members can typically help an organisation with their skills and experience, their networks and/or by other means. The Board member will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team of ProVeg C.I.C. and work closely and harmoniously alongside the International Board to support joined up and unified global strategic delivery of objectives.
Duties
Board members are bound by a combination of statutory duties and organisational duties:

Ensure that ProVeg C.I.C. complies with its governing document, company law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations
