Background
Chapter One is a dynamic, growing charity with a vision of a world in which all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. Our mission is to close the reading gap by providing children with one-to-one support at the time they need it most. We work in eleven areas/regions of the UK and will support 3250 children in 2024-25.
Our unique Online Reading Volunteer programme pairs struggling five to seven-year old (KS1) readers with reading support volunteers who are working professionals. The volunteer ask is very focused: readers commit 30 minutes a week to read with a child using a bespoke digital platform for an entire academic year. The results are transformative, boosting children's reading confidence and ability.
From a school perspective, online reading volunteers provide direct, meaningful literacy support for up to 10 pupils per class. The programme is particularly suitable for communities where it might be challenging to find parents and other volunteers who can commit to physically visiting schools to boost reading.
Job Summary
Chapter One is seeking a Birmingham/West Midlands Programme Manager from September 2024 who is an excellent communicator and is able both to motivate and support schools and teachers to implement our online reading volunteers programme, and also to ensure that the programme’s impact and benefit to disadvantaged communities is maximised throughout the academic year.

• Through regular visits to/contact with schools, provide on-going embedded professional learning and support to teachers throughout the year as needed
• Proactively monitor classroom adherence/fidelity to the Chapter One model, including systematic review of data reports and volunteer feedback, taking proactive action to resolve problems that arise
• Analyse and manipulate data (largely in Google sheets) to produce reports and identify trends
• Create monthly data summaries for all participating classrooms
• Lead annual review meetings for senior leadership at participating schools
• Support programme monitoring, evaluation and research as required
• Coordinate in person and virtual school ‘visits’ of volunteer teams to classrooms where necessary
• Liaison with corporate partners as required
• Weekly communication and status updates with Senior Programme Manager(s) and wider team
• As a new school year approaches, secure commitments from returning schools and find and target new schools to join Chapter One’s programme

You’ll manage a portfolio of donors, have the opportunity to develop new relationships and shape our income now, and for the future.
By raising valuable funds and securing major gifts from high net worth individuals, you can make sure that our work continues to have long-lasting impacts - ending cages for egg-laying hens, convincing corporates to commit to improving chicken welfare in their supply chains, challenging the Government over the use of fast-growing breeds of chicken, and working to secure the first legislation to protect farmed fishes.
Through your work you will also have the opportunity to educate and inform our supporters, connecting them to our cause and creating greater awareness about the suffering of farmed animals.

Hours:
This is a full time position of 37.5 hours per week over Monday to Friday.
From 1st July 2024 we are piloting a four day working week across the whole of the UK organisation. This pilot is planned to run for 12 months, at which point a decision will be made by our Board of Trustees as to whether this will become permanent. Success of the trial relies on the organisation being able to achieve the same or improved level of impact in four working days as five, with staff experiencing either the same or improved levels of wellbeing.
During the four day week pilot, working hours for this position will be reduced to 30 hours per week, spanning Monday to Thursday, with no reduction in salary. This will be a temporary change to the contractual terms with the successful candidate. The appointed person must be prepared to increase their working hours to 37.5 hours per week if a return to a five-day working week is decided.
Who you are:
We are looking for someone who can, through compelling and inspiring writing and communication, engage donors and potential funders in a variety of different formats, whether that’s email updates, thanking them for their support, or drafting a funding proposal. Ultimately, you will need to be able to bring them closer to our work, so that they can understand their individual contribution and the impact their donations can have, and are more likely to take action as a result.
You will also need to be able to build strong relationships, with the ability to understand the motivations of our donors, demonstrate the impact of our work, spot opportunities to engage them, and ask for their financial support at the right time.
Many of our donors come from the Effective Altruism (EA) community, so having an understanding of this community and how to engage it will be helpful. You will help to grow our supporters within the space, raising our profile and spotting opportunities to develop relationships with prospective new donors and funders.
Home-based, you will enjoy collaborating and working independently. As a self-starter, you are able to work autonomously and use your initiative to solve problems and see projects through from start-to-end. You’ll thrive on a varied and interesting mix of tasks and projects.
You’ll keep good records and understand the importance of clean and up to date supporter and donation data in creating efficient systems and processes.
We foster an environment of feedback, development and learning at THL UK. You’ll be someone that values receiving feedback, is able to assess your own performance, and has a desire to want to learn, develop and improve as an individual.
Prior experience of major donor fundraising is beneficial, whilst knowledge and understanding of trusts and grants fundraising would also be helpful. However, we are also keen to hear from you if you have relevant transferable skills and are looking to transition into this exciting area.
We’re looking for the right person, committed to the work we do at THL UK, with values that align with our own, and with the right skills and attitude - an exceptional and confident relationship builder and strong communicator.
We will provide relevant learning and development opportunities, tailored to your experience and personal needs, which could include in-house training, external training and fundraising events and conferences.
Be part of our mission to end the abuse of animals raised for food.
Primary Duties:
-

This will include creating cases for support and funding briefs for specific projects, working with the Programs Team to pull together all relevant information, as well as completing bespoke funding proposals. You will also need to be able to identify opportunities, know when is the right time to make an ask and what type of ask it should be, whether a one-off gift, multi-year funding, unrestricted or for a specific project, or match funding to help leverage a specific campaign or appeal.
-
Coordinating our funding pipeline - managing and monitoring what stages our major givers are at in their cultivation journey, tracking details of funding applications/asks made, managing deadlines for applications and monitoring reports, tracking and reconciling donations and providing receipts, securing relevant funding agreements, and capturing the motivations, giving history and details of interactions of our donors.

Children’s online safety is both an important and an urgent issue and the need for our unique work here at Breck Foundation is greater now than ever. The primary purpose of this role is to help children and young people take practical steps to become more digitally resilient and be safer online. Breck Foundation is at the forefront of efforts to safeguard children and young people online. Our organisation was founded in 2014 in response to the tragic loss of Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old boy who was groomed and murdered by someone he met online. Our work aims to prevent this from ever happening again. Our work saves lives. We reach thousands of children and young people in schools and other community settings with Breck's story every year. Our talks and educational materials fill a gap in the current UK curriculum that otherwise leaves children vulnerable to online grooming and exploitation. With 98% of young people now active internet users, current and future generations grow up having to navigate new and evolving digital dangers. We are looking for a Head of Resources to join our team.
Emmaus Bristol is a local charity, working to help people out of homelessness. The work we do here changes lives.
This is a new role for Emmaus Bristol. Through our five-year-planning process we identified a new staffing
structure that will allow our charity to thrive and to grow. The Head of Resources is needed so that the core organisation runs smoothly, and policies, processes and systems allow the team to do their jobs efficiently and effectively. This will be crucial as we develop new streams of work, and help more people out of homelessness or into work.
The Head of Resources therefore, will have a key role to play in making Emmaus Bristol an effective charity.
This is a senior leadership role, but as we are a small charity, all roles are somewhat hands-on. You’ll need to be as confident discussing our reserves policy with trustees, as you would be resolving a cash discrepancy with a retail team member, and just as good at strategy as you are at detail.
You will be joining a friendly and enthusiastic team who are passionate about what they do, and you will be making a huge difference to people’s lives.
To empower people affected by homelessness and poverty to change their lives for the better whilst using our voice to achieve social change

We are looking for a standout relationship manager to join our fantastic team of fundraisers who work tirelessly to raise funds for Young Lives vs Cancer. This is a role of variety, opportunity and innovation and we are looking for someone who embraces change and constantly strives to achieve more.
A great personality and team ethic are really important in this role as you will maximise income for Young Live vs Cancer by coaching our supporters to reach their goals, whilst seeking out new fundraising opportunities for your geographical area. This role sits within the ‘Regional Engagement' team and we need someone with natural customer service skills who wants to deliver a legendary experience to all of their supporters. Your team of supporters will range from volunteers and individuals, to groups and local corporates.
East Midlands is filled with some of our most committed supporters and there is so much opportunity to grow our supporter base across the region. Our Social Workers support families from across the counties and our Home from Home 'Billy's House' in Nottingham enables families to stay close to their loved one for free during treatment, so building relationships with these teams is a must.
We are not your average employer, nor are we looking for an average candidate in a 9-5 role. What we offer is the flexibility and adaptivity to ensure that your personal work/life balance is taken care of. Whether it is finishing early for an appointment, picking up from school or further education, we can help to make it work for you. Many of the team work condensed or flexible hours to suit their individual circumstance so we would love to discuss your needs more at interview.
Experience within a similar role, or within the charity sector, would be great but we know that a lot of the most important skills in this role are easily transferable from another sector. We want the right person and we will invest in training the right candidate. The skills we are looking for in this role are:
• Master at storytelling
• Epic at relationship building
• Strong prioritisation skills
• Great communicator
• Self-Motivated
• Self-Aware
• Great at spotting opportunities
• Influencing/Negotiating
• Compassion
• Bravery
• Integrity
• Team player
The must haves:
• Have a full UK driving licence and access to a car (including business insurance)
• Have a sufficient Broadband connection if home based
• Live in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire or Northamptonshire. Candidates who live outside of the local authority should highlight an intention to relocate to the area in their covering letter for their application to be considered
This role is subject to a Criminal Record Check. In the event of a successful application a Disclosure report will be sought at a basic level.
