We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our team in this newly created 18 month fixed term contract.
Your role will be to plan, design, and deliver data analysis activities to draw insight from a range of sources which can be used to inform policy, research, campaigns, and service delivery. Using data science, you will help design new solutions to complex challenges facing the armed forces community and those who support them, and be at the heart of building and understanding the evidence base to inform RBL’s future strategy.

Reporting to the Head of Policy and Research, you will support teams across RBL to collect, analyse, and use data in ways that enable effective, efficient understanding of needs of the armed forces community, what is being delivered to meet these needs, the impact this makes, and where improvements can be made.
Some key responsibilities will include:
· Design, advise on, and conduct accurate, timely analysis of data from sources across RBL, using a range of statistical tools and techniques
· Explore, analyse, and visualise data from external sources including national surveys, studies, and databases
· Monitor the latest developments in data science and create innovative proposals for new ways to create, combine, analyse, and use data
· Draw conclusions and recommendations from data, transforming data into insights that help address complex problems and inform decision-making, and present these in a range of formats.
· Advise on design and define data requirements for future information collection systems and research, to enable deeper and practical insights for future service planning, policy influencing, and campaigns
· Work closely with Campaigns, Policy & Research colleagues to maximise use of internal and external data to inform and evidence policy positions, asks, and campaigns
· Develop relationships with research, analysis, and data stakeholders, for example in academic institutions, research agencies, charities, government departments, other public bodies, the Armed Forces community, and data science professionals across a range of sectors.
You will be contracted to your home address, and you will perform most of your work remotely there using our collaboration tools to work with colleagues, with occasional travel (incl. for monthly team meetings) to our London Head Office hub.

About the role
Every woman who comes to a Smart Works centre is referred by another organisation or charity. Across the UK, over 400 organisations refer women to Smart Works, including job centres, refuges, prisons, work programme providers and other charities.
Without our referral partners, Smart Works would not be able to reach women in need and help them to succeed at interview and start a new chapter. Building and nurturing these partnerships is central to our work and success as a charity.
Based at our centre in Reading, you will work and travel across Berkshire to conduct outreach to ensure Smart Works receives consistent referrals and performs well against our ambitious targets to help more women year on year. in practice, this will include attending meetings with partners, organising events to showcase our service and managing all referral communications.
You will be part of the wider service delivery team in Reading, supporting on the running of the centre to the highest possible standard. This will enable you to understand and speak to the support available to unemployed women in Berkshire and what specifically Smart Works Reading can do to increase this support.
Smart Works Reading has an umbrella organisation, Smart Works Charity based in London, and there may be some infrequent travel to London. There will be liaison with the London team to support induction and training, plus participation in regular on-line meetings, phone calls and attending our annual conferences.
Duties and responsibilities
Reporting to the Centre Manager, the successful candidate will lead a range of activities, including:
- Managing referral partner relationships across Berkshire, nurturing existing relationships and onboarding new partnerships
- Undertake research and creating project plans to set briefs or funding to engage referral partners
- Organise, deliver and attend events across Berkshire that increase referrals to Smart Works Reading
- Analyse and manage a robust database of current referral data and potential referral partners, to identify opportunities, priorities and share successes
- Share regular, engaging communications with referral partners
- Pilot new initiatives and ideas with referral partners to increase and maintain engagement
- Support the smooth running of the Reading centre, such as by answering calls and booking appointments

About you:

About MPE
Myeloma Patients Europe (MPE) is a pan-European organisation representing 52 myeloma and amyloidosis patient groups from over 33 European countries. It is registered as an international non-profit organisation under Belgian Law. A Board mainly composed of patients and caregivers is elected by the membership to oversee the strategy and governance of the organisation. A team of 13 staff members runs remotely the day-to-day operations, programmes and services within 4 divisions: Access and Policy, Medical Education and Scientific Engagement, Patient Evidence and Member and Patient Community Programmes.
MPE is dedicated to improving the treatment, care and quality of life of patients with myeloma and AL Amyloidosis. To this end, the main goals of the organisation are:

About the Patient Evidence department
The MPE Patient Evidence department was established in 2020 to generate evidence important to patients with myeloma and their families and is led by Dr Eilidh Duncan. Our goal is to understand unmet needs in the patient population and design patient-focussed research questions which will support new understandings and knowledge. MPE partners with academia, other patient organisations, industry and regulatory bodies where possible to understand more about what gaps exist within the myeloma landscape and how to best generate evidence on these. We work alongside MPE’s policy and access team to anticipate what questions need to be asked and what the data needs are for upcoming medicines approval processes.

A rare breed of marketer/fundraiser and data analyst, with the unique ability to analyse and interpret data, you’ll be able to tell the insight stories needed to drive and evolve campaigns and develop new products.

Key accountabilities:
Use insight and analysis to inform and guide the Fundraising and CX team:
· Work with the Head of CX to manage all campaign analysis and insight projects and ensure that interpretations of the findings and insights are delivered to the appropriate stakeholders in order to inform and drive future performance and strategies
· Manage the analysis of fundraising campaigns and products, working closely with the relevant fundraising teams to identify key learning and make recommendations for future activity
· Build dashboards and ways of visualising data that fundraisers can use on a daily basis to track, report on and optimise their campaigns
· Work with others across the CX team to report against testing schedules and strategies
· Run segmentations as required for fundraising teams
· Ensure that completed insight is effectively disseminated to internal customers and that they understand and use it

Role Objective
To raise awareness and promote Kooth to children and young people (and/or Qwell to adults) by engaging with trusted referrers including schools, colleges, GPs, A&E, pharmacies, community groups, sports clubs and charities. This role involves weekly travel.
Main responsibilities:
Promote Kooth to young people in schools and colleges
- Maintain an up to date, comprehensive database of all secondary schools and FE/ Sixth Form colleges in contract area(s)
- Maintain an up to date, comprehensive database of all GP surgeries and medical centres in contract area(s)
- All new contacts including local service providers and voluntary organisations to be uploaded into Salesforce
- Prioritise engagement of at least the top 25% of all secondary schools and colleges that are the largest (no. of students) in contract areas
- Prioritise engagement of at least the top 25% of all secondary schools and colleges that are the most deprived (pupil premium)
- Take a strategic approach to diary management and planning outreach to maximise reach and engagement across whole contract area(s)
- Use monthly data to assess and evolve your approach to maximise effectiveness of your local engagement - for all age groups, localities and demographics
Inform and promote Kooth (and Qwell where applicable) to referrers
- Engage education, healthcare & local community professionals to encourage them to refer young people to Kooth (and for Qwell to use for themselves or refer adults)
- Embed Kooth across contract geographical area and demonstrate engagement with a breadth of different referrers
- Encourage parents/carers to tell their child about Kooth (and that Qwell is available for them where applicable)
- Demonstrate knowledge in the specific reasons why Kooth compliments referrer needs (our key ‘selling’ points) e.g.
- for education professionals: out of school mental health support, aligns with Ofsted assessment criteria, positive mental well being improves education outcomes, specific support for students around exams
- for healthcare professionals: reducing the 8am rush at GPs, taking the pressure off other care pathways and mental health waiting lists, NHS cost savings, supporting crisis step down, reduce A&E presentations, providing equity of access with our whole population service
- Build confidence and skills in presenting to and engaging a professional audience of broad disciplinary backgrounds
- Regular recording (weekly) of all new contacts and activity/ engagement of CYP and professionals on Salesforce
- Host stalls at high footfall public events, including Freshers Fairs, and attend key regional network and partnership meetings to support and promote Kooth (and Qwell where appropriate)
- Organise, present or support national & regional KoothTalks Training webinars to professionals and national webinars to CYP when requested
- Follow up all requests from local referrers who attended a national webinar in a timely manner
Manage the distribution of promotional materials
- Send monthly newsletters, printed promotional materials and/or digital resource packs to all referrer contacts
- Email the correct tailored newsletter to referrer contacts in a timely manner every month
- Manage the ordering and distribution of printed promotional materials within the monthly credits allocate
- Ensure the appropriate digital assets and links to referrer information hubs are included in all external referrer communications
Raise awareness via social media
- Promote Kooth (and Qwell where applicable) via local social media networks to teachers, parents, healthcare professionals and local organisations
- Regularly post information about Kooth to local networks on LinkedIn, Meta and Twitter

We are River Action
We are a small and agile campaigning organisation on a mission to rescue Britons rivers from a toxic cocktail of agricultural, sewage and industrial pollution. We support community action, galvanise and mobilise public opinion, influence government policy, and call out destructive industrial practices to incentivise changes that end pollution.
We are building a talented team of positive disrupters and community mobilisers to deliver our strategy to urgently protect and restore our rivers for the benefit of community and wildlife.
Britain’s rivers are our life support system and they are dying. We need urgent action to bring them back to life.
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for highly engaged people who share our passion for rivers, wildlife and people who bring a creative, collaborative and investigative approach to campaigning. For this role we are looking for people who will blend intelligent analytical problem solving and laser-focused tactics with creative and engaging ways of inspiring others to act and to achieve impact through our work.
What you’ll be doing:
The Campaigns Coordinator will help to deliver highly engaging public and political campaigns and activations. You’ll work closely with the Head of Campaigns and the wider team to develop and deliver positively disruptive campaign strategies designed to meet the organisation’s overarching goal of rescuing our rivers. You’ll be investigating the causes of river pollution at a catchment level, delving deep into supply chains to uncover those behind the damaging practices that are killing our rivers and identifying constructive solutions at a catchment and national scale. You’ll be working collaboratively with the River Action team to devise, develop and deliver creative campaigns and tactics, designed to have the greatest impact on the most threatened rivers and communities by engaging the voting and consuming public and holding polluters and government to account. You’ll be supporting the Head of Campaigns and our external consultants to deliver our political advocacy and legal action strategy to bring about change at the highest level of decision making. You will bring energy and innovation for scaling our reach and impact, blending a touch of the maverick with a professional and diplomatic approach to bringing about change urgently.
Main Duties

Contribute to the delivery of River Action’s campaign strategies.

Plan, deliver and coordinate data-driven campaigns for community, media and political audiences.

Generate highly engaging written and graphic content for our campaigns, adjusting the tone and messaging to different audiences and campaign needs.

Utilise research showing the causes and sources of river pollution at a catchment level within the policy and regulatory context and assess evidence (including scientific data and reports) to develop impactful campaigns.

Work with our outside legal counsel to explore legal routes to tackling river pollution such as bringing judicial reviews targeting Government and private actions targeting industry.

Utilise River Action’s project assessment and management systems and processes to ensure the efficient coordination of campaigns.

Investigate and report pollution supply chains at a catchment level for example the relationship between farming, producing, transporting and retailing food and the associated pollution.

Plan, deliver and coordinate creative campaigns including petitions, public meetings, protests, stunts and campaign collateral such as video and other content.

Develop key campaign tools and assets such as props, promotional assets, toolkits and digital campaign tools.

Draft engaging written content for different audiences to raise awareness of the problems rivers and communities face and offer hope and solutions.

Contribute data and research outputs for the creation of press releases, MP briefings, policy documents and public communications.

Represent River Action at campaign events and media opportunities, providing well-informed, professional and motivating contributions.

Coordinate contractors and suppliers that are engaged to support our campaigns and activations.

Contribute data and content for our impact monitoring and evaluation systems.

Produce internal monthly campaign reports and provide content and data for external communications.

Maintain and develop partnerships with other key groups and stakeholders working in similar areas of work to River Action.

Identify opportunities to engage, empower and expand River Actions network of supporters.

Support the Communications Coordinator to create inspiring and high quality digital and social media content and news stories, including taking photographs and videos, writing articles/blogs, providing comments and conducting interviews.

Support the Head of Campaigns, Communications Coordinator and Senior Media Coordinator in responding to the reactive news agenda.

Help ensure all team members are well-briefed and on brand ahead of external engagement.

Contribute to fundraising efforts particularly crowd funding and drafting of funding proposals to support Campaigns and Fundraising Teams and charity’s mission.

Work as a motivated and collaborative team player within a fast-paced team.

Carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post as requested by your line manager or any other member of the River Action team.

Significant experience in public and political campaigning preferably within the environmental sector.

Excellent written skills, adaptable to different audiences and messages, preferably backed by creative design and digital skills.

An understanding of the issues that are impacting our rivers, land and wildlife, especially relating to land management including agriculture, transport, and utilities.

The ability to establish and maintain effective contacts and relationships with senior and influential external individuals and bodies.

The ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing including the media, community groups, other NGO representatives, supporters and followers on social media.

Written submission
River Action has just released data about the state of the British dairy industry in the national press. Please provide a one page campaign plan for how you would use that data and initial story to target the responsible polluters and government regulators, mobilise the public and campaign for urgent changes in industry practices and regulation. Consider how you would generate media headlines about the pollution problems and potential solutions while raising the profile of River Action, promoting positive opportunities that put farmers in a positive light and offering support to help them change their practices while targeting the root causes of the systemic problem caused by lack of regulation, lack of incentive and pressures from supply chains such as supermarkets. This should include your idea, target audience, how you would measure success, and a high level project plan. You do not have to include costs but your proposal should be appropriate for an overall budget of £20,000. Should you be successful in being invited to interview, you may be asked to present this idea.
