We need a new Director of Communications.  You’ll be responsible for helping us communicate the Gospel and the great work we do in our communities, and telling the good news stories that encourage and inspire us as we embark on our strategy to deliver the Diocesan vision to “bless the 1.5 million people” in our diocese who currently have no meaningful connection with our worshipping communities.  We need someone who can catalyse everyone in the diocese to be better communicators.

The successful candidate will have a wide-ranging experience of communication matters with the ability to promote our work in a positive and strategic manner, and manage media relations proactively and effectively.

The post is based at Church House, Daresbury, with some travel around the Diocese and the option for hybrid working with up to 40% working from home. A full driving licence and access to a car is essential.

Salary: £51,515 - £55,692 per annum, dependent upon skills and experience.

The Communications Officer will be responsible for supporting the communications and digital team to maintain consistent and high-quality communications across our global membership, donors and external stakeholders. 

They will handle the day-to-day operations of our programme communications, website, social media platforms, member community forum, asset management, email marketing, and event communication, ensuring consistent messaging and branding.

The post-holder will need to have a collaborative and inclusive spirit as this role will involve working closely and across teams within and outside Start Network. They will be a great writer, editor with good attention to detail, and an eye for design.

The Communications Officer will report to the Communications Manager and will work closely with the Digital team to ensure success of both digital and traditional communications.

 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Content development, publication, and dissemination

• Craft and edit compelling multimedia content for a global audience including news articles, press releases, blogs, videos, and case studies

• Adapt content for websites, social media, email campaigns, etc., ensuring each format is optimized for its specific audience and channel. 

• Plan and maintain the content calendar together with the Digital team to ensure consistent delivery and audience engagement. 

• Promote and disseminate content through various channels including but not limited to social media and partner platforms 

• Collaborate with Start Network teams, members, and hubs to transform and disseminate reports, learning materials, grants, impact stories and other resources into clear, compelling, and accessible formats. 

• Uphold the Start Network brand by ensuring all external facing materials is according to the brand guidelines 

 COMMUNICATIONS MATERIALS, AND ASSETS 

• Develop and maintain communication materials of Start Network including but not limited to fact sheets, brochures, marketing materials, presentations, core scripts, impact reports, guidance and templates, etc and ensure the team and members are able to effectively use them

• Ensure that visibility guidelines for members and programmes are kept up to date, and work with members and hubs to ensure these are being used accordingly

• Maintain the organisation and accessibility of Start Network's digital assets. This includes maintaining our digital asset platform and keeping tabs on photos, videos, presentations, logos, and other creative materials from and for members, hubs, and the Start Network team.

COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM MANAGEMENT 

• Support the management of Start Network’s social media channels and manage day-to-day engagement in close collaboration with the Digital team 

• Lead the management of the member community by posting weekly news and updates from across our programmes and lead on the production of email newsletters and e-marketing. 

• Support the management of digital platforms handled by the Communications and Digital team 

• Communication operations 

• Support the communications team meetings, including book diaries and setting up Zoom links when relevant. 

• Manage the communications inbox and ensure enquiries are dealt with swiftly. 

• Work with the finance team to process invoices from communications suppliers. 

• Ensure communications contacts and relationships are managed using Salesforce. 

• Closely work with Event Coordinator to ensure Start Network events are well-promoted and disseminated

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

• Excellent prioritisation and time-management skills and an ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines while delivering quality output

• Experience in crafting compelling stories in various forms for diverse audiences

• Minimum 2 years’ experience working in a communications function within a fast-paced environment

• Good working knowledge of both new and traditional media and ability to adapt content across contexts

Climate Change Adaptation Officer
Salary: £31,000 - £35,000

Location: Callow Rock, Shipham Gorge, Cheddar

As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) sixth assessment report laid out in March 2023, we are now on the brink of irrevocable damage from climate change; this is our ‘final warning’ and the time is now for action to address this crisis.

The report highlighted that restoring nature was one of the key actions needed to address this issue. Somerset Wildlife Trust are at the forefront of this work in Somerset and are fully committed to this path through our Wilder Somerset 2030 Strategy and to delivering a vision whereby we reverse biodiversity loss and tackle the climate crisis.

Developing and further embedding the ‘Act to Adapt’ process, through our ‘Adapting Somerset’ and ‘Somerset’s Wilder Coast’ projects to support communities and to develop plans to adapt their local areas to the impacts of climate change.

Responsibility 1: Providing leadership and technical expertise

Being proactive and nurture strong relationships by:

• Providing leadership on SWT Climate Change Nature Adaptation work.
• Working closely with the Local Nature Partnership Coordinator and Advocacy Manager, and wider project team from partner organisations, to develop and deliver a programme of online and in-person communications, meetings and workshops. This is designed to foster climate change adaptation in the county supporting nature’s recovery and community resilience, and therefore involves working closely with farmers and landowners, all layers of local council, infrastructure experts, academics and the general public, including communities already impacted by flooding.
• Providing line management to the Climate Adaptation Assistant.
• Continuing developing the RAD approach for priority habitats, alongside the Landscape Recovery team, which will contribute to managing land within internationally important wetlands.
• Keeping abreast of national and international climate change developments and relate these to Somerset.

Responsibility 2: Engagement with Communities and Creating Robust Partnerships

Lead engagement efforts by:

• Contributing to discussions and workstreams developing climate change adaptation pathways at a county level, and in specific local areas relating to flooding, drought and wildfire.
• Developing information for a lay audience regarding the role of nature in reducing the impacts of climate change, including: sea-level rise; predicted changes in land use; warming, etc. and to help people understand what the future may bring especially in Somerset’s more vulnerable nature habitats.
• Supporting people’s wider understanding of the role of nature to mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration and storage.
• Continuing the rollout of the Act to Adapt process in local communities, organising events and workshops and using the Climate Adaptation Toolkit to explain the process of developing community and nature based solutions to the big issues of climate change.

Responsibility 3: Developing sustainable projects and evaluation

Lead and support projects and reporting by:

• Working with the Somerset Local Nature Recovery Strategy team to incorporate climate adaptation and vulnerability principles to these priorities.
• Assisting with work to share information and project developments with project partners in the UK.
• Developing and implement a communications plan that raises awareness of the project and its impact; garners support; and highlights Somerset as a place at the frontline for climate change. This will include engagement through social media and the production of awareness materials in printed and online formats.
• Managing the budget of the Adapting Somerset project and keep track of time contributions to the ELM’s Landscape Recovery and Somerset’s Wilder Coast projects.
• Monitoring and evaluating progress and impact, meeting project milestones and reporting to funders.
• Representing SWT externally in meetings, in the media and by giving presentations to various audiences.

Sibling Arts C.I.C. co-creates multi-arts projects with queer, trans, sex worker & migrant communities. Looking for a Finance & Administration Officer (FAO to lead on our financial and administrative needs, and grow with us as we do more ambitious projects with social impact at their core.

Financial Strategy and Management

• Co-creating and monitoring budgets, org-wide and for projects

• Monitoring multiple income streams inc. sales, grants, investments

• Overseeing compliance with HMRC including VAT, PAYE and accessing tax benefits such as Theatre Tax Relief (TTR) alongside our accountant.
