Job description

Director of Development

Competitive salary

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Schools are seeking to appoint an outstanding Director of Development who will play a crucial role in the future of both Schools’ strategic development as they look to build upon and grow community engagement and philanthropic income.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School and Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls are two of the eleven schools of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. They share a rich history, tracing their roots back to the 17th Century when their founder, Robert Aske, established the principles that guide them to this day – the Schools give talented and ambitious young people, irrespective of background, the opportunities they need to succeed in life. The Schools strive to work together, offering the best of single-sex education in a co-educational environment.

With a shared vision, mission, and strategy for the future, it is an exciting time to become a part of the Habs community. In September 2019 the Schools’ published their Strategy for 2030, committing the Schools to work more closely together and to do more to honour the philanthropic legacy of their founder Robert Aske. The new role of Director of Development will play a key part in this objective.

Reporting jointly to the Heads of the Schools, the post-holder will contribute to the strategy by bringing together two separate development and alumni teams to create a well-structured and high-performing operation that will deliver significant income for both Schools over the coming years. A recently conducted external review of fundraising and development has identified the potential for the Boys’ School to launch a multi-million pound fundraising campaign. This will include raising funds for transformational bursaries that will enable children from all backgrounds to benefit from all that the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School can provide. The Director of Development will also look at launching an equivalent campaign for the Girls’ School.

The ideal candidate will be a commensurate and experienced fundraiser who can recognise the opportunities and challenges associated with the role. They will have had success securing gifts of six figures and above, and will be adept at building strong, effective relationships not only within their own team but across the School communities; from parents and alumni to academic and support staff at all levels. As the two Development and Alumni teams are brought together, they will manage this process with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy. The Director of Development will liaise closely with the Senior Leadership Teams across both Schools as a senior member of staff and will keep them informed of fundraising developments.

This is an exciting and career-defining opportunity for an outstanding fundraiser and strategic leader to establish a strong combined development function that can deliver significant fundraising success for the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Schools.
