The Role
The Communications, Engagement and Advocacy Manager will lead the day-to-day delivery of the Trust’s communications, advocacy, and engagement work. As Scientific and Patient Information Manager, you will work in the Medical Education and Scientific Engagement Team at Myeloma Patients Europe (MPE). Under the Department Head and MPE Leadership Team, collaborating with the Head of Communications, you will oversee the following projects and activities:
Patient information and communications management (Approx. 55%)
A key role of MPE is providing up-to-date, comprehensive, and patient friendly educational materials and tools for our members and the patient community, as well as communicating about scientific advances in myeloma and AL amyloidosis. This role will be responsible for working across MPE to develop a patient information and educational plan and develop and deliver resources. MPE expects the appointed person to:
- Perform efficient scientific watch (monitoring advancements in research and clinical development)
- Lead the development and implementation of a patient information plan based on member and patient needs, scientific advances and cross-department projects
- Monitor the readership and usage of MPE patient information materials, incorporating website user analytics and feedback from users to increase the reach and impact of the department
- Research, write, and develop patient information and educational materials (including factsheets, Q&As, webinars and infographics). European Myeloma and AL Amyloidosis Clinical Trial Navigator Management (Approximately 35%)
MPE has developed an online clinical trial search tool of European myeloma and AL amyloidosis clinical trials for patients and advocates. This role will be responsible for the management, improvement, and promotion of this core MPE programme, with a focus on ensuring the tool and content is patient friendly, including:
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate database of all industry and academic recruiting myeloma, AL amyloidosis, MGUS, and smouldering myeloma clinical trials in Europe
- Write and format lay / patient friendly clinical trial descriptions for the Navigator website
- Liaise with industry and academic clinical trial sponsors, clinical trial sites, and other stakeholders to maintain database up-to-date
- Liaise with web developers to manage the Navigator website, make enhancements, and fix technical issues
- Oversee implementation of translated materials in multiple languages
- Elicit feedback from patients, family members, clinicians and other stakeholders to ensure continued improvement and enhancements
- Manage website news and content

About you

- A Bachelor’s or a Master’ s degree in a relevant scientific field
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience
- Demonstrable experience (and tested during the interview process) of writing and communicating scientific/complex information for lay audiences across different media
- Ability to understand, critically read and process complex scientific information (from clinical trials, scientific papers, conference talks etc) – and communicating about this in lay, patient friendly language

The Volunteering Programme Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the professional mentoring programme and Alumni Programme can operate smoothly and effectively, and for implementing our volunteering strategy to engage supporters in our work.
You will be responsible for line managing team members working on upReach’s mentoring programme and Alumni Programme, and will work closely with the Programmes and Impact Enabling teams to ensure that volunteering opportunities are unified and cohesive.
1) MENTORING PROGRAMMES

Provide strategic and operational oversight of upReach’s two mentoring programmes, Professional Mentoring (structured 6-month matches) and Ask an Expert (one-off interactions with professionals initiated by students).

Manage stakeholder relationships with mentoring partners, ensuring a smooth and high-quality experience for all volunteers.

Collaborate with Programmes and Partnerships teams to ensure that our mentoring supply and demand is balanced, identifying opportunities for development and working with teams to plan this.

Produce robust and detailed reporting for participating partner employers on an ongoing basis, increasing the chances of renewals.

Embed the professional mentoring programme within the wider volunteering framework, ensuring it complements Alumni and open access volunteering opportunities while maintaining the value of partner-funded packages.
2) ALUMNI PROGRAMME

Provide strategic oversight and direction for the Alumni Programme, ensuring it aligns with upReach’s volunteering strategy and organisational goals.

Ensure Alumni are engaged through a range of activities, including professional development opportunities, the Alumni Ambassador Board, and tailored communications.

Oversee the creation and implementation of Alumni volunteering opportunities, ensuring these are impactful and complement wider partner-funded activity.

Collaborate with Programmes, Fundraising, and MarComms teams to ensure Alumni engagement supports Associate development, fundraising, and long-term organisational sustainability.

Monitor Alumni engagement data and outcomes, ensuring robust reporting to funders, stakeholders, and the Leadership Team.
3) VOLUNTEERING

Implement our refreshed volunteering strategy, working in collaboration with the Partnerships, Fundraising and Programmes teams to ensure this meets the needs of the charity.

Act as the first point of contact for all volunteer enquiries.

Oversee the volunteer journey from attraction to offboarding, including clear onboarding, safeguarding processes, engagement activities, and recognition (e.g. events, certificates, digital acknowledgements).

Conduct ongoing evaluation of volunteering activities and implement improvements as necessary.
-
Collaborate with other teams across the organisation to identify opportunities for volunteers, and support with implementing this.
-
Manage relationships with volunteers and organisations, ensuring positive experiences for all those involved with upReach in this capacity.

Pilot and evaluate new open access volunteering initiatives, tracking impact through defined KPIs and reporting mechanisms.

Work with Fundraising and MarComms teams to develop strategies for recognition, retention, and long-term ambassador engagement of volunteers.
4) LINE MANAGEMENT

Manage relevant individuals within the Mentoring and Alumni team, providing ongoing personal and professional development support through weekly 1-to-1 calls or meetings, written feedback on documents, and day-to-day guidance via Slack.

Use relevant impact dashboards and data to set priorities for your team and to identify areas where support from the Programmes team is needed, to ensure that all internal KPIs are achieved.

Managing the performance of your team - including setting SMART professional development goals and utilising a range of resources and tools where necessary to help your team perform successfully in their roles. Be part of the upReach Leadership Team and contribute to forming the strategy and direction of the charity.

Provide leadership in embedding volunteering as a strategic pillar of upReach’s mission, ensuring sustainability, scalability, and alignment with organisational growth.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Regional Casework Manager (RCM) to join the North West of England Region at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
About the role
You will be part of the regional office team, managing a group of casework administrators. The team provides specialist administrative support and act as a single point of contact to SSAFA branch-based volunteers ensuring that SSAFA beneficiaries receive consistent, timely, and high-quality service. The RCM role will involve developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with volunteers, including branch-based casework managers. Additionally, the RCM will occasionally assist the Regional Casework Co-ordinators with call handling, signposting, and triaging initial client enquiries.
To help you establish yourself in this post you will receive excellent training and induction to SSAFA. You will influence the processes and procedures within the regional office as it develops, working closely with a dedicated team under the guidance of the Regional Manager.
The position is home-based, but you will occasionally be required to travel within the North West Region or to other locations.
About the team
The regional office is a “virtual” office and supports the six SSAFA branches in the North West of England region, as the branch-based volunteers deliver casework for SSAFA beneficiaries. The successful candidate will work as part of a larger support team which will include 5 Casework Administrators and a Regional Manager. All team members are home based, residing in the region.
About you
To excel in this role, you should have a solid educational background and experience in managing employees, as well as overseeing and reporting on service delivery. You should have a proven ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, achieving results through negotiation and influence. Previous experience of working with volunteers would be advantageous. You will have used Microsoft Office 365 to a high standard and be capable of learning a computerised case management system quickly. Additionally, you should be skilled with numerical data.
The successful candidate will be capable of planning and managing their own workload, with minimal supervision and have considerable experience of managing accounts.
It would be desirable to have an understanding of the way of life for today’s Armed Forces, veterans and their families. An understanding of the voluntary sector would be valuable, and the military charity sector landscape across the North West Region would be beneficial.
