Our members may be blind, partially sighted, have dyslexia or other learning difficulties or even be unable to hold a book. Whatever the reason for their struggle to access print, our vision is an inclusive society where everyone has access to audiobooks.
This pack outlines more about what we do and the impact of our work which we hope you find informative.
Our Board of Trustees is highly motivated with a genuine commitment to use their business and life experience to help make a difference. We are currently looking to appoint a new Trustee to take on the position of Treasurer, joining the Board to support the charity as it moves into an exciting period of growth and development. Unfold does governance differently. An award winning charity, we are led by the people we serve, with inclusive, participatory governance structures which have twice been short-listed for excellence in the Charity Governance Awards.
Unfold (previously known as Westminster Befriend a Family) is an established local charity that gets people where they want to be. Powered by volunteers, we support children, young people and families with one to one mentoring and peer support groups across Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea. We're open to everyone, but we target those who face the most challenges: 93% of our service users are people of colour, 75% are single parent families headed by a woman and in 50% of the families we support there is a child with disabilities or special education needs.
We support the local community and we have also developed specialised programmes for people with specific needs, including refugees, children excluded from mainstream school and children with experience of the care system.
Unfold Trustees
We have a dynamic, committed, open and friendly board, and we're seeking two new trustees to join us, bringing skills and experiences from the not-for-profit or public sectors.
To reflect the experiences of our service users, we're aiming to maintain the diversity of our board - we're particularly keen to hear from people from the global majority, women, and people who identify with other under-represented groups, including those with disabilities or who identify at LGBTQI+.
We have grown considerably in the last five years, and we now support ten times as many people a year, with five times the budget. Along the way we've re-branded, undergone a digital transformation, become user-led and significantly expanded our team. This rapid change reflects both the extent of the community needs, and our ambition to meet those. We're looking for trustees who can help us go to the next level as we set our strategy for the next five years.
Trustees play a key role in ensuring that Unfold achieves its core purpose and overseeing the overall management and administration of the charity. They also help to ensure that Unfold has a clear strategic vision and that we are working in line with our charitable aims. Trustees support and challenge Unfold’s CEO to enable Unfold to thrive.
We are looking for two Trustees to support our vision and take on the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities
- Engage with and be accountable to our service-user accountability structures, our Youth Advisory Council and our Women’s Advisory Council, who support us in setting strategic direction and to whom we are accountable.
- Support and advise on Unfold’s vision, goals and activities
- Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation
- Oversee the charity’s budgets and financial plans and monitor and evaluate progress
- Ensure that risks are being identified, monitored and managed effectively
- Ensure the effective administration of the charity
- Provide support and challenge to Unfold’s CEO
- Keep up to date with changes within the environment that Unfold operates
- Contribute to reviews of the charity’s governance
- Attend board meetings and be adequately prepared to contribute to the discussion. These meetings are held in person in our fully accessible London office.
- Support the promotion of Unfold's aims and reputation
- Contribute to the charity’s sub-committees and attend sub-committee meetings adequately prepared to contribute to the discussion
Skill and Experience
- Knowledge and experience of the charity sector
- An understanding of and commitment to participatory and inclusive governance.
- An understanding of and the ability to support Unfold’s fundraising strategy
- An understanding of statutory services which might be supporting families, children, young people, mental health and wellbeing, which might be through knowledge and experience in local authorities or the public sector
- Strong communication skills and able to contribute to board discussions
- Knowledge or lived experience in the borough of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea or neighbouring boroughs
- Understanding of safeguarding the welfare of children or vulnerable adults
Personal Attributes
- Personable and positive
- Willingness to learn and contribute.
- People orientated with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Passionate about supporting families to improve outcomes for children, young people and parents.
Values
Trustworthy, non-judgemental, transparent, caring and compassionate, empowering, proactive, self-motivated and accountable
We particularly encourage applications from:
- Candidates from under-represented groups including women and those from Black, Asian, or minority ethnic backgrounds
- People from marginalised groups, such as people who consider themselves LGBTQ+, disabled or otherwise facing challenges.
- Individuals with knowledge or lived experience of Westminster and the surrounding boroughs.
- People with less experience but a keen enthusiasm and commitment to our aims based on lived experience.

Alpine Garden Society President and Board Chair person
Thank you for expressing interest in joining the Board of the Alpine Garden Society as our President and chair. You do so at an exciting time for the charity as it seeks to embed recent changes to thrive for another 90 years.
Since our founding in 1929 we have been a specialist interest society that has aimed to share our passion for growing and conserving alpine plants. With the increased pressures on society with smaller gardens and the advent of social media, alpines are enjoying a resurgence and so we wish to see the society grow from the strong foundations of the past.
The last five years have seen us adapt to change and develop to the modern society we are today. Our switch to embracing digital technology and use of modern communication has allowed us to harness the decades old love of our interest and bring it to new audiences on a global stage. We continue to indulge in traditional activities like garden visits, plant fairs and shows that we are renowned for by our loyal members.
The next chapter on our journey to our centenary sees consolidation of our operation and putting our membership at the heart of what we do to deliver our charitable mission. We wish to grow our membership from a stable base and seek new and exciting ways to inspire people through our passion for plants.
About Us
Welcome to the Alpine Garden Society! We are one of the largest specialist garden societies in the world. We are passionate about plants.
The Alpine Garden Society was founded in December 1929. The main purpose of the Society was, and still is to educate its members and the public on alpine plants, their cultivation and conservation. We achieve our charitable objectives through staging our National Shows, publishing our quarterly Journal, The Alpine Gardener and by organising talks, events and conferences. Ever since its inception the Society has also built displays incorporating alpine plants at various national Flower Shows.
We are passionate about the conservation of alpine plants and as a registered charity, we fund cultivation and conservation projects across the UK and abroad. We also encourage the development of knowledge and skills in the alpine field by funding the AGS Trainee Scheme.
Alpine Garden Society members enjoy exclusive benefits such as expert-led AGS Expeditions tours all over the world and access to one of the biggest seed exchanges in the world.
The Alpine Garden Society is governed by a Board of Trustees and run by a director alongside a small staff cohort and a team of dedicated volunteers.

An exciting opportunity to join the Board of Trustees at an ambitious charity looking to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain gateway qualifications in further education and get back on track.
ABOUT GET FURTHER
Get Further is the first charity dedicated to providing high-quality tuition to students facing challenges in further education, adult education, and the apprenticeship sector. We aim to transform the experience of these students, helping them to build their skills and realise their aspirations for education and work.
Every year, 200,000 children – disproportionately from disadvantaged backgrounds – do not achieve the expected standard in crucial English and maths qualifications while at school, locking them out of many university courses, apprenticeships, and key professions.
Twice as many disadvantaged 16- to 18-year-olds go to further education colleges than school sixth forms, and yet for too long, the needs of students in further education have not taken centre stage in education policy or funding. We work in partnership with further education providers to prove that, when given the means, all young people can build the skills needed to progress in education and work.

The Island Lead Volunteer is a key volunteer leadership role within Scouting with responsibility for providing outstanding management and support for the groups within the County. The primary focus for the Island Lead Volunteer is to ensure that Scouting is able to reach every young person in Jersey; open to all regardless of faith, colour or social background, because we believe Scouting has the ability to change lives.
This is achieved by leading the team of Group Lead Volunteers, and other Island appointments as well as working with the Growth and Communities Team (employed staff) to provide enough places to meet the demand for Scouting, and by ensuring that every youth member has access to a high-quality balanced programme that is challenging, relevant and rewarding.
As our Island Lead Volunteer, you'll get the opportunity to lead Jersey through transformation and develop working in teams, and look at extending the reach of scouting to all parts of the county and for all those who want to become involved. You will be able to really develop and hone your leadership skills by managing teams of remote volunteers across the breadth of Jersey.
Leading and managing volunteers provides so much more opportunity and experiences than with employees, and the skills you can gain by doing this really can be a great asset for your professional life as well as in Scouts. The issues and challenges that you find ways to tackle will stretch you as an individual and as a leader, and you’ll find yourself discovering new things that you are capable of achieving, all within a supportive environment.
If you get a kick out of seeing things happen, achieving success and making a positive impact to a wide audience then the Island Lead Volunteer role definitely provides all of that.
