Job description

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic, and forward-thinking editor to join our friendly team. Based within the healthcare charity sector, IA was the first stoma patient support group in the UK and has been supporting people living with an ileostomy or an internal pouch since 1956.

As editor you will be primarily responsible for producing our quarterly magazine, one of the charity’s primary sources of support to its members. This includes identifying and working with content authors, discussing advertising requirements (not selling), collating and editing content, content layout and liaising with our external design, print and distribution suppliers. Our magazine must be delivered to strict timescales.

In between magazine production, this blended role will require you to support our other charitable activities such as production of our monthly newsletter, literature production, review and maintenance of our existing literature range in addition to more general communication and marketing activities to support the wider team.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in charity communications and must have experience in an editorial role producing a regular magazine. Applicants called to interview will be expected to present examples of their own, recent work which will be treated with the strictest confidence and only be used to help inform the interviewing panel in their decision making.

The role is 100% remote and the successful applicant can work from a location of their choice. Where an applicant is called to interview they will be expected to attend face to face which will likely be in London, although the charity will make every effort to accommodate individual requests.

Travel within the role is expected to be minimal (perhaps 1 or 2 times per year), however the charity will reimburse any reasonable travel costs agreed up front, where you are expected to travel on behalf of the charity.

Key skills and experience required:


  • Experience in an editorial role sourcing and producing engaging & relevant content for the target audience to a high standard to further the aims of the charity.
  • Reviewing and authoring relevant content for print and a digital audience
  • Experience with content layout
  • Experience of working with third party stakeholders providing services to the charity such as feature articles, design, print and distribution
  • Proofing and signing off documents prior to print or distribution jobs including agreement of final invoices
  • Relevant experience working within the UK non-profit sector
  • Ability to manage deadlines and manage third party relationships to meet strict timescales
  • A good working knowledge of UK data protection regulation


  • Promoting advertising opportunities to relevant advertisers (e.g. within the stoma care sector) although selling advertising space is not a requirement of the role
  • Experience of working on sensitive content for people who have experienced acute and chronic illness, been through life changing surgery or those who may be feeling vulnerable or exposed at a difficult time
  • Identify ways to improve the magazine to increase the magazine’s appeal and readership (e.g. reach more people living with a stoma while continuing to be sensitive to the needs of our existing readership)


  • Excellent communication skills with a good knowledge of English language
  • Excellent judgment and reliability
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Foster an inclusive and diverse culture
  • Good team player
  • Strong time management skills to meet strict editorial and production deadlines
  • Strong administrative skills to support the production and distribution schedule of the quarterly magazine
  • Intermediate level design skills including experience with DTP software an advantage but not essential
  • Strong MS Office (or equivalent) skills essential


In return, we are offering a salary of circa £38,000, negotiable with the right candidate, along with a competitive benefits package.
