You don’t need a military background, just some basic digital skills, the ability to get on with a wide range of people and good written English. What is a Digital Marketing Volunteer?
There are SSAFA branches and service committees throughout the UK and overseas. We use local microsites and social media to raise awareness of our services, raise funds and find new volunteers. Digital Marketing volunteers help us maximise our message, keep content up to date and increase traffic to our sites.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
Our clients, volunteers and supporters come from all backgrounds and age groups and want to engage with us in different ways too. To offer the best possible service we need to provide seamless communication, consistent messages, and accurate information. We’d love to hear from you if think you could help us grow our on-line presence.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home.
The role would suit someone looking for a flexible volunteering opportunity as times and days could fit in around work and other commitments to suit you.
What would you be doing?
- As part of a team of volunteers, maintain branch microsites and social media feeds.
- Look at ways to increase traffic to microsites and improve SSAFA’s digital brand.
- Keep content current and accurate.
- Support and maintain the SSAFA brand by consistently using our brand guidelines and tone of voice.
- Working with the digital marketing team, interpret analytical data to develop local communication plans.
- Working with local SSAFA branches, build social media channels and integrate on-line and off-line activity to best effect.
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What are we looking for?
- Friendly and approachable people, possibly with some experience of digital marketing/ IT or social media
- Ability to write in English to a good standard.
- Ability to be respectful and non-judgemental with clients, supporters, volunteers, other agencies, and staff.
- Understanding of how social media can be used to engage and influence.
- Ability to use social media applications including adding and editing content.
- Basic understanding of website maintenance, training will be provided.
- Basic understanding of digital analytical tools, training will be provided.

Our focus as an organisation supporting refugees are three-fold:
Frontline evacuations, where conflicts are at their their most precarious
Emergency humanitarian aid deliveries in the most hard-to-reach areas in Ukraine, Syria and Turkey, as well as Greece and France.
Self-reliance projects such as an education centre in Jordan, or upskilling adult refugees into work abroad and in the UK via our "Vintage Emporium" charity shops.
You will gain invaluable experience as a senior marketeer, working directly with the Managing Director, spanning traditional and digital channels in disaster relief in an agile organisation that punches well above its weight, committing to saving the lives of people who otherwise wouldn't be saved. We are small - your voice will be heard and your creativity welcomed!
Your focus will be on marketing our AID SHOP, a groundbreaking humanitarian aid delivery system that allows the general public to turn their empathy for new crises (Gaza, Turkey & Syria earthquake etc) into effective immediate action.
When disaster strikes, or the season changes - survival items for escalating conflicts or disasters are changed and added to our website. You will communicate these updates via email campaigns and social media posts, the items are then 'purchased' by our supporters, with the shopping lists collated internally by you, then sent to our partners or volunteers on the ground who can purchase the physical items and deliver the survival items to vulnerable people in the most precarious and volatile regions, sometimes within minutes!
We also save greatly shipping and storage costs, and there is next to zero chance for unforseen delays at customs.
It is the most efficient way we know of giving in a crises - and is very efffective when marketed right (following either our set formulas, or bringing your own to experiment with). The best part? People know exactly where their money is going, so are justifiably much more generous!
So we need a volunteer (you!) to manage our marketing and communication efforts, ideally 2 days per week to:
*Post on social media (1 x reel / story per week, using a template to communicate the most needed survivial item of the week available for purchase in our "aid shop". 1 x Faceboo photo or video post)
*Update website as required
*Write 1 x compelling press release per week
*Update marketing / fundraising collateral
*Assist charity shops with creating leaflets and posters ad-hoc
*Organising our photos & videos by devising a tagging system
Requirements:

MAIN BOARD MEETINGS + EXPENSES
Trustee Board meetings take place virtually. They are usually 2hrs. Over and above this time commitment, trustees on average, depending on their role, may give additional time in being directly involved in occasional ad projects – MHF Trustees ‘own’ a ‘bucket’, in other words, an area of responsibility like HR, Fundraising, Safeguarding, Marketing, Finance, Digital, Risk or Campaign Management that allows an individual to bring their skills, experience and talents to the charity. - Working with other branch volunteers to develop a publicity plan.
- Publicising SSAFA events.

- Develop and maintain networks with local press, TV and radio outlets through providing press releases, interviews, case studies etc.

Background
The Society of Genealogists (“the Society”) is an educational charity founded in 1911 and is custodian of an extensive and exciting collection of diverse historical and modern, physical and digital records. The Society’s staff and volunteers include experienced and knowledgeable genealogy professionals, with remarkable knowledge and experience of genealogy.
Chair of the Trustees
The Chair of the Trustees may serve a maximum of three terms of two years before being required to step down. Following the successful tenure of the present Chair, the Society is seeking to recruit the next Chair commencing from the AGM in July 2025, to continue to lead the Society in its continuing ambition to deliver a rewarding research and membership experience to all of its members in the UK and internationally; ensuring it continues to be a thriving organisation through the next stage of transformation and explores opportunities for growth.

Job Description
Role: Chair
Term of Office: up to 6 years, with renewals every 2 years.
Purpose: To chair the Board of Trustees of the Society of Genealogists, ensuring that the charity runs legally and is provided with firm strategic direction.
Responsibilities (specific to the role of chair):
- To represent the Society and act as its spokesperson at external and internal functions, meetings, conferences, exhibitions.
- To lead the Board of Trustees in setting and monitoring implementation of the Society’s Strategy.
- To monitor the performance of the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), including a formal annual review against objectives.
- To oversee, or directly manage, the selection of new trustees from time to time to maintain sufficient trustees with the appropriate mix of skills.
- To plan, in consultation with the CEO, the annual cycle and set agendas for the Board of Trustees meetings, the AGM and any extraordinary meetings.
- To chair and facilitate meetings of the Board of Trustees and associated special meetings/committees.
- To provide support and delegate assignments as necessary to the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.
- To provide direction, support and impartial objective advice to the Board, individual Trustees and the Society as a whole covering: policymaking, liaison with honorary officers and with chairs of other committees.
- To liaise with the CEO in order to maintain an overview of the affairs of the Society, and to provide support as appropriate.
- To participate in personnel management grievance and disciplinary matters as defined by the personnel policies of the Society.
- To support and contribute to the development of the Board of Trustees, facilitating succession planning, change and conflict resolution.
Essential Skills/Qualities:
- Knowledge and experience of the voluntary and community sectors; understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
- To work at all times with integrity, objectivity, and honesty.
- Awareness of the commercial realities of a not-for-profit organisation and ability to balance the variety of requests from membership while ensuring financial stability.
- Proven leader with insight, independent judgement, and ability to think creatively in order to drive the development and realisation of the Society’s strategic vision.
- Experience in a board or senior executive role, leading teams and chairing efficient decision-making forums, through effective communication and interpersonal skills including impartiality, fairness, good listening skills, a willingness to speak out where necessary with tact and diplomacy, and an ability to respect confidence and confidentiality.
- Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the Society.
Desirable Skills/Qualities
- Understanding of the genealogy sector/market and the Society’s respective position therein.
- Experience in overseeing IT/digital projects and / or multifaceted change programmes.
- Experience in analysis of competitive position.
- Familiarity with and experience of reviewing financial accounts, budgeting, and financial controls.
- Demonstrable ability to develop a strong public profile amongst SOG members and in the genealogy community and to provide a strong contribution to fundraising from donations, grants, and legacy-giving.
General Responsibilities (with all Trustees):
- To ensure that the Society complies with its governing document (including pursuing its objects as defined therein), charity law, company law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- To ensure that the resources of the Society are applied exclusively in pursuance of its objects.
- To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees in giving firm strategic direction to the Society, including setting overall policy, defining goals, evaluating performance against agreed targets and implementation of decisions made by the Board of Trustees.

Focus Birmingham’s (Focus) Trustees are all volunteers, playing an essential role in overseeing the charity’s activities in partnership with the Board of Trustees.
