Digital media volunteer volunteer roles

We are looking for volunteers who can commit for a minimum of 10 weeks, with adaptable profiles and who have the enthusiasm and energy we need to provide support in various areas across the organisation.

In this generalist role, you will find yourself responsible for a variety of tasks; helping to ensure that both our programme activities and day-to-day operations run smoothly. Second Tree works in a transparent way, in a challenging and changeable situation in the field; therefore, an ability to learn quickly and be open to feedback is vital.

The possible tasks included below are not exhaustive or rigidly defined; an exact role profile is dependent on the skill set of individual applicants. An average day might see you talking to students in a camp to tell them about a new class, or supporting in the writing of a grant proposal. Tasks could loosely fall within 4 key areas:

Programmes:

• Supporting programme coordinators in maintaining the day to day running of their activities with the Youth Wellbeing or Adult Education Programmes
• Supporting our children’s teachers or workshop facilitators in the planning or delivery of classes or excursions outside of camps
• Communicating key messages about our programmes to our students in camps or urban areas

Admin, Finance & Logistics:

• Supporting the management in liaising with external partners
• Maintaining organisation wide financial processes
• Coordinating the arrival and housing of incoming volunteer

Fundraising:

• Supporting the planning and implementation of Second Tree’s fundraising initiatives, such as campaigns
• Organising and maintaining regular communications with Second Tree’s donors (newsletters, thank you letters)
• Supporting in the identification of relevant grants
• Supporting in grant writing activities

 Digital communication:

• Contributing to the written/visual content of Second Tree’s social media output
• Developing social media strategies to expand our reach and impact
• Producing regular reports on performance
• Website maintenance

 Skills desired: 

While there are no experience or skill-specific applicant requirements for this position, candidates must:

• Be accountable and efficient, making sure that tasks that you take up are completed on the agreed timeframe
• Be honest and transparent, being able to give and receive feedback in the most straightforward way possible
• Have a strong sense of humour, being able to make fun of yourself is key
• Care for people; the interests of the people we work with should always be your first concern
• Instil the values above in the people that work with you
• Have keen problem-solving abilities, and a good understanding of what questions to ask, and when
• Communicate in English, both written and orally
• Learn quickly, managing a wide-ranging and intense workload

We offer:

In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the volunteer houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the volunteer houses are full, this would allow us to offer a volunteering opportunity to someone that cannot afford to pay rent.

What will you be doing?

EcoCounts is a group of volunteers working together to embody EcoCore’s approach to the climate crisis. EcoCore covers a lot of ground because the climate and biodiversity crisis is so all-encompassing, which means we have a lot of varied and different volunteer tasks available, ranging from carbon footprint data collection, setting up sub-teams of friends or colleagues or doing social media or running workshops. 

Your responsibilities would be to create volunteer tasks from our work streams, which would include things like: 

• creating a role description for each volunteer task to give a good outline of everything required and expected

• keeping track of what volunteers are active on

• encouraging and inspiring volunteers to deliver on commitments

• creating an incentives or rewards framework for volunteers, potentially working with supporting businesses to agree on gift vouchers, tokens etc

• managing a small budget

• building up a social network with events, collaborations and other inputs

• using our social media accounts to advertise, to celebrate achievements etc

• help other directors, trustees & secretary keep reporting, stats, and feedback on activities up-to-date

Goals

1. Our 2025 target is 100 people doing their carbon footprints

2. We’re looking for 20 coordinators

3. We have about a dozen volunteering roles to fill beyond the two above

What are we looking for?

1. You should be a people-person with experience of managing people. You should be happy to put in the time and effort communicating with the volunteers both all-together and individually in a way that gets the best results from them.

2. Personal change is only one of the five ways that we can change society - we don't focus on personal change alone, we want to change our community, our local businesses and our local government.

What difference will you make?

Society has got itself into a dangerous situation with the climate crisis and EcoCounts aims to create a way out. We need all sorts of different people, not just climate nerds and sustainability fanatics, although of course that doesn't hurt. The person we need right now is someone who knows what people need to keep them happy and effective as a volunteer for us.

Being a volunteer-based organisation at this stage still, that might make the volunteer chief of staff the most important person we have. Of course we all consider each other equal. Being small and dynamic means EcoCounts can offer the flexibility for you to do an excellent and fulfilling job.

Women Empowerment, Education, and Arts & Culture

In rural Uganda, limited access to quality education, economic opportunities for women, and creative expression prevents communities from reaching their full potential. Many families live below the poverty line, and young people often drop out of school due to financial hardship. Women, especially single mothers, lack stable income and professional skills. Artistic and cultural resources are underrepresented, and youth have few outlets to develop their talents and voices.

Toonda addresses these challenges through a community-led approach that combines education, women’s empowerment, and arts & culture, creating a safe and inclusive environment where people gain skills, confidence, and income.

Our solution is to empower people at the grassroots level through a vibrant community hub that offers:

Educational support (school sponsorships, tutoring, digital literacy, reading programs)

Women-led income generation (weaving, tailoring, catering groups – now producing for TK Maxx)

Creative spaces for expression and exchange (annual cultural gala, artist residencies, workshops)

Online Campaigns – Fundraising & Awareness

Volunteer Role Description (remote, unpaid)

Support TOONDA in planning and running engaging online campaigns to raise awareness and generate donations. You'll help us design and implement strategies across platforms like Betterplace, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Key Responsibilities: Develop and coordinate online fundraising or awareness campaigns

Create or adapt content for different platforms (text, visuals, calls to action)

Schedule and manage campaign timelines

Support with basic social media ads or boost strategies (Meta Ads, Google Ads Grants)

Monitor engagement and suggest improvements

You’re a good fit if you: Have experience with social media campaigns or digital fundraising

Enjoy creative storytelling and simple design (e.g. Canva)

Are familiar with platforms like Betterplace, Facebook, or Instagram

Want to use your skills for a meaningful cause

German is a plus

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

• Experience with Muslim Student Associations (MSAs) or Islamic Societies (ISOCs) as a member, volunteer, or organizer.

• Comfortable engaging with Muslim communities and student networks.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Marketing Skills: Proven expertise in brand strategy, digital marketing, and campaign management.

• Creative Storyteller: You have a keen eye for capturing powerful moments and translating them into compelling visual stories.

• Innovative: Demonstrated ability to drive growth through innovative and data-driven marketing strategies

• Community-Oriented: A deep understanding of the Muslim community in Ontario, especially in relation to university students and local mosques.

• Relationship Building: Proven experience in building and maintaining meaningful relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.

• Project Management: Strong organisational skills with the ability to support program delivery efficiently.

• Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences, from students to community leaders.

• Commitment to Ihsaan: This role requires someone who strives to deliver their responsibilities with ihsaan.

• Dedication to Service: A heart for khidma (service), and a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of young Muslims through education.
